Vancouver International Film Festival's Leading Lights program invites a rising filmmaker every year to select and curate a series highlighting films that have influenced their work.

This year’s programmer is @sophyromvari, whose devastating feature debut, 'Blue Heron,' swept film festivals in 2025, picking up 10 awards and earning many more nominations. Now she’s back at VIFF, drawing connections between some of her most treasured films and her own work, with screenings kicking off October 3.

We chatted with the rising filmmaker about why she chose 'Close-Up,' 'Vengeance Is Mine,' 'Le Bonheur' and 'The Tree of Life' for her guest-curated spotlight.

In contemporary cinema, where filmmaking is often shaped by scale, infrastructure, and the machinery surrounding a production, there are directors who begin somewhere else: with an idea, a limitation, and the means already within reach. Their films turn modest circumstances into creative choices, proving that intimacy, invention, and formal freedom do not require excess.

This post is a small map of filmmakers who keep making movies on their own terms, finding new visual languages in the process and reminding us that cinema can emerge from almost anywhere.

Which other filmmaker would you add to this list?

To me, this film is about thinking of others, caring for them, and reflecting on what we can and cannot do for someone. It is a movie that gently embraces that very process of deep contemplation.
