Grounded and genuinely funny.

I’ve been a fan of @jasonbateman for a long time, and watched quite a few of his his movies and TV shows over the years—Bad Words remains my favorite—so getting to see him speak in person was such a treat.

Friday night at the @academymuseum, he joined TCM host Dave Karger for a conversation about The King of Comedy, one of his favorite films. Bateman is one of the stars featured in Karger’s new book, 50 Movie Nights: Contemporary Stars on Their Favorite Classic Films. Hearing him talk about it, his work, and then getting those little off-the-cuff moments like this one made the evening even more fun.

The King of Comedy is dark, funny, and wonderfully weird. Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro, it’s very different from the Scorsese–De Niro movies most of us know. And De Niro is hilarious in this one! Definitely one I’m glad we saw. by @sosronegoro

A day in our lives as Indonesian dancers in Los Angeles!

Weeks before the show → rehearsals + prepping costumes & accessories ✂️🧷

10:00 AM → hair & makeup begins 💄💅🏻

12:30 PM → suitcases packed, hit the freeway 🧳🚗
1 hour driving in LA traffic to Long Beach
1 hour searching for parking & walking to Long Beach Convention Center.

Sometimes venues have dressing rooms.
Sometimes… they don’t 😅
Quiet corner, folding mirror + random metal stand = our pop-up dressing room!

Costumes on, headdresses pinned, final touches applied…

And of course there was a classic performance day drama…
Check with DJ → they don’t have our music even though it was emailed to them! 😱
No worries — we always bring backup on a USB!

And just before we perform → suddenly asked to be background dancers for a saxophone performance 🎷✨so we literally had to came up with a last minute choreography. We got this!

3:30 PM → showtime!!!
Sharing Indonesia through dance & music 🇮🇩

Afterward → Wonderful Indonesia booth time
Visitors lining up for photos 📸
Feels like we’re Disney characters at a theme park 😆

5:00 PM Finally → headdresses off, forehead indentations appear, hair looks like crazy hair day & suitcase packed.

6:00 PM → Dinner together 😋

9:00 PM → Home Sweet Home 😴

Six minutes on stage…
But weeks of rehearsals, sewing, travel, surprises, problem-solving, photos, and teamwork go into making it happen ❤️

All to share a little piece of Indonesia in Los Angeles 🇮🇩

Happy Lunar New Year from Nusantara Dance 🧧

As one of Indonesia’s ethnic groups, Chinese Indonesians hold Lunar New Year as a deeply significant tradition. There was a time when their celebrations were banned, traditions silenced, and identities pushed to the margins.

Between 1967 and 1998, public expressions of Chinese culture, from language and Confucian practices to Lunar New Year celebrations were restricted. Social and political pressure was so strong that most Chinese Indonesians adopted Indonesian names to avoid discrimination. With the reformation in 1998, these limitations gradually lifted, and by 2002 Lunar New Year became a recognized national holiday.

Today, as a vibrant part of Indonesia’s diverse communities, Chinese Indonesians celebrate Lunar New Year with pride. These customs are once again honored openly, affirming cultural presence, resilience, and continuity within Indonesia’s rich history.

This Lunar New Year, we celebrate from the streets of Chinatowns across Indonesia to Chinatown Los Angeles and everywhere in between. Across borders and generations, the tradition continues, welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse, a year of bold moves, new beginnings, and unstoppable energy! 🧧🔥🐎🧧

Beberapa persahabatan tumbuh lewat perjalanan, meja makan, dan obrolan.

Sama @theonlykika, percakapan bisa berlangsung berjam-jam. Tentang apa saja: hal-hal kecil, gosip receh, curhat relationship, sampai soal tantangan hidup, agama, ipoleksosbud, dan segala turunannya. Kecintaan kami pada bahasa Indonesia juga sering membuat obrolan berbelok ke diksi, kosakata, bahkan lirik lagu.

Karena jarak Indonesia-Amerika nggak bisa dibilang dekat, setiap pertemuan selalu diniatkan. Ketemunya bisa di mana saja. Jakarta, Surabaya, Jogja, Lombok. Fleksibel. Yang pasti, belum “pulang” rasanya kalau belum menghabiskan waktu bersama Kika.

Yang membuat persahabatan ini terasa ekstraistimewa adalah kemampuannya untuk bisa dekat dengan keluarga. Berbincang dengan Mama dalam bahasa halus Jawa (serta-merta memotivasi diri ini untuk belajar!), dan tanpa canggung berbagi ruang dan rasa dengan anggota keluarga lainnya.

“Kika is love”, kata Ty. Dan itu benar adanya.
