Do you remember when Ninja Man walked in on the famous Bodyguard vs King Addie’s dance, to defend Addie’s in Brooklyn⁉️⁉️

The dance was in the famous Biltmore Ballroom… and despite Ninja Man trying to help Addies, Johnnyguard was able to defeat them both!!!

Zoomed in to @smilejamtvj in Jamaica this morning to give my views on the effect of Vybz Kartel’s Trinidad show booking fee being revealed publicly.

This discussion is not about stopping any artiste from charging what they deserve but a wider discussion about how the reveal of that figure naturally will have a domino effect, because as much as everyone is currently saying ‘Dancehall Unity/ One Dancehall’, artistes, as are selectors, etc, are all competitors, they all compare themselves to each other and use that info to determine where their booking fees & other contractual demands should be.

Often times artistes don’t consider their real pulling power and price themselves accordingly, they generally leave that onus solely on a promoter’s strength to bring een patrons….

So now we will end up with some artistes who are simply increasing their fees because of how much a promoter is paying Kartel & not because they can bring in patrons the way Kartel can pull and ensure a promoter makes back his/her money.

What many of you are also not considering are all the other variables that a promoter contends with currently including venue access and costs. After selling out stadiums how many/ who will want to go back and perform in clubs🤷🏽‍♂️

Overall it’s a great moment for Dancehall knowing he can pull that figure & that other acts are selling out large venues but how long can this be sustained?
How many promoters can afford this?
Where will this leave all other performers booking fees including bands, selectors, etc?

By the way don’t think other vendors aren’t watching too, promoters be prepared for your stage, lighting, sound, security, bar services costs to also push up their prices because everybody now knows what some of us are spending on the current top act in Dancehall!! by @soundchattv

(((( WARNING))) The substantial payments exceeding a million dollars for Vybz Kartel's concert performances will trigger a significant price increase for booking Reggae and Dancehall artists. This escalation could adversely impact the growth of small promoters and may price artists out of certain markets and regions.

Artists will definitely overlook the fact that their influence and pulling power is not on par with that of Vybz Kartel. The industry will be forced into a money grab, with artists claiming to be undervalued.

Numerous individuals have played a vital role in advancing Jamaica’s music and sound system heritage.

It is imperative that we persist in seeking heightened recognition and exploring innovative pathways for this art form; otherwise, our efforts may go unrecognized. Despite the decades that have passed since her debut, she continues to thrive.
