Sound UK announcement

As we approach our 25th year, we are taking a moment to celebrate the breadth of extraordinary musical encounters created in collaboration with the artists we work with and presented to audiences over the last quarter century.

However, in light of the current arts funding landscape, after this autumn season, the way Sound UK does things will be changing. Our permanent team will be moving on to new pastures and Sound UK will be scaling back its artistic programme, whilst continuing to represent its small roster of artists and working on specific projects.

We’d like to say thank you to all the artists, partners and collaborators we’ve worked with; our trustees; freelance and permanent members of the Sound UK family, and all the audiences who have shared these experiences with us. We have loved every minute of it.

Outdoor and site specific music, sound and light projects have been an important part of Sound UK’s artistic programme over the last 25 years.

@polly_eldridge, Sound UK’s Director says:
“It started with Canal music. I’d been on a tour bus, trekking up and down motorways and thought, surely there’s a better way to travel and present music. And of course there is, the slow ways of the canal, stopping off to perform to communities along the way. Working outside of standard music spaces, out in nature and the weather is liberating. You are surrounded by life past, present and future, and there’s a sense of teamwork unlike any other project.”

Venue touring and festivals have always been a key part of Sound UK’s programme.

We’re celebrating 25 years and taking a look back at a selection of the tours and brilliant artists we have had the pleasure to work with over this time.

@polly_Eldridge, Sound UK’s Director, says:
“It was during my first job 30 years ago, working for Cheltenham Jazz Festival, that the love of bringing artist and audiences together struck. Since then, we’ve brought together 100s of artists and 1000s of people in clubs, village halls, and major concert halls. We’ve commissioned and created new collaborations and work from the ground-breaking east London Fertilizer Festival to Pee Wee Ellis’s Funk tour.”

It is with a mixture of sadness, pride and huge appreciation for everyone we have worked with, that we make this our last Sound UK post.

Thank you so much for supporting our projects and all the brilliant artists we have worked with over the years - we have loved every minute of it.

There are so many artists, partners, funders, participants, audiences, places, spaces and landscapes which have made this the phenomenal journey it has been. We cannot thank you all individually but know that you all live within us through everything you've shared.

Our adventures are not over, and we will continue to bring people together through extraordinary musical experiences as we each set off down our new pathways.

Our best wishes for a peaceful and music filled festive season,

Polly, Chloe, Jamie and the Sound UK team

Huge thanks to @maija_eh who was a massive part of our team for so long, and @curiousjuliapayne for all her support as Chair of our fantastic trustees

For over 25 years, Terje Isungset and his collaborators have been exploring the acoustic possibilities of natural ice, harvested from frozen lakes. Carved in Norway, the instruments - including ice harp, ice horn, iceophone, ice percussion and ice bass, are kept frozen, travelling by ice trailer when on tour.

Isungset’s Ice Quartet is returning to the UK this month, with seven dates around England starting this Sunday. Head to the venue’s website to book tickets:

🧊 Sun 16 Nov: Canterbury @thegulbenkian
🧊 Tue 18 Nov: Basingstoke @anvil_arts
🧊 Wed 19 Nov: Poole @lighthousepoole
🧊 Thu 20 Nov: Leeds @howardassemblyroom
🧊 Fri 21 Nov: Bristol @stgeorgesbris
🧊 Sat 22 Nov: Southampton @turner_sims
🧊 Sun 23 Nov: London @kingsplacelondon

The tour is produced by @soundukarts

In 1999, Terje was commissioned to write music for a concert under a frozen waterfall in Lillehammer, Norway. He decided to use elements from the river itself as musical instruments in his composition; stones, wood and finally – ice. Terje explains, “I took the sound from underneath the waterfall, and then I hit the ice. I thought it was so beautiful. It was like falling in love.” Discovering the sounds of natural ice opened up a whole new range of sonic possibilities for Terje, his ice journey had begun.

“Quercus, as ever, were absolutely outstanding.” Audience feedback, Kings Place

Following a sold out performance at @kingsplacelondon in October, Quercus continue their autumn tour this month with 3 shows in Cardiff at @rwcmd (13 Nov), @stgeorgesbris (27 Nov) and @turner_sims Southampton (28 Nov).

The trio brings together multi-award winning UK folk and jazz musicians to create beautiful, lyrical chamber music.

“[June Tabor] totally inhabiting every song, transfixing a packed hall from the first moment…her voice undimmed, as strong and sweeping as ever. Pianist Huw Warren & saxophonist Iain Ballamy have collaborated with her for over two decades now and together they form a perfect unit.”
Audience feedback from Kings Place

As we approach our 25th year, we are taking a moment to celebrate the breadth of extraordinary musical encounters we have created in collaboration with artists and presented to audiences.

First up, we look back at some of the rural tours we have produced over the last 25 years.

Polly Eldridge, Sound UK's Director says:
"Maija Handover (co-Director) and I grew up in villages, having to travel many miles on buses or cadging a lift to go and hear music in the nearest towns and cities. We loved bringing innovative and memorable events into the heart of village life, building relationships and creating work with villages and rural communities. The sense of community and close connection was incredibly special, and it was an absolute joy to work with many brilliant people and to visit beautiful places from Shropshire down to Cornwall."

Featuring:
Earth Machine Music with @KimmoPohjonen (2008)
Ice Music with @TerjeIsungset (2012)
Playing the Field (2013)
Forever England (2014) with @SamLeeSong, Rachel and @beckyunthank
The Little Radio (2015) with @IainBallamy and @StianCarstensen
Ghost Stories with @ThePaperCinema (2016)
Keld: Freshwater Songs with @KerryAndrew (2017)
The Fleet with @JasonSinghThing and Sarah Acton @blackvenwriter (2024)

Did you remember coming to any of these events? Maybe you were in the audience or one of the artists or creatives involved? Share your memories with us in the comments.
