It’s been nearly a year since we got the keys and started building our Dolby Atmos sound design room. It’s been a busy year and it’s starting to get crowded in here! by @soundworks_folkestone

No more recording ideas on phones.

I’ve been building a mobile 24-track recording rig that can roll into @thelivingroomno62 and capture performances properly.

The aim is simple: turn rehearsals, live sessions, songwriting sessions and gigs into high-quality multitrack recordings without needing a computer or a full studio setup. Just hit record and go.

The rig is centred around a Cymatic uTrack24 with 24 simultaneous inputs and a selection of quality preamps including AML EZ1073s, Focusrite ISA and vintage 1960s valve preamps.

Whether you’re a band wanting to capture a live set, an artist recording ideas, a podcast, or a venue looking to document performances, everything is recorded as individual tracks ready for mixing and mastering afterwards.

Available as dry hire or with me engineering the session.

This video is me wiring up the rack. The audio isn’t from the rig yet… it’s still a phone recording. Soon there’ll be no excuses. by @soundworks_folkestone

Got an idea cooking now that @thelivingroomno62 is nearing completion.

Recording monster sounds in a sound design session.

The U87 is doing what it does best — capturing detail and character so I’ve got something solid to push and mangle later.

Laying the carpet tiles today.

I loved the quarry tiles, but I couldn’t quite get them scrubbed up to feel right. Carpet tiles help calm the room visually and keep the focus where it should be — on the picture on the screen and the sound coming from the speakers.

Slow progress, but the space is settling into itself. by @soundworks_folkestone

Got the U87 out and living on the boom arm.
Paired with the MKH 60 and MKH 50, it gives the studio a really flexible palette — from intimate dialogue and voice, through to texture, detail and movement.

Nothing flashy. Just reliable tools, set up properly, doing what they’re meant to do:

Studio is finished and ready for it’s first project starting tomorrow. by @soundworks_folkestone

Hanging the projection frame from the ceiling. Using a boom pole to help me hold it up. by @soundworks_folkestone

Building the projection screen frame and tensioning the screen. It’s as wide as the room so a little tight to work with. by @soundworks_folkestone

Nearly there!

Building more bass traps for the back wall — this time out in the garden.
Now the kit’s in, I’m doing everything I can to avoid turning the room into a sawdust snowglobe.
Slowly but surely, it’s all coming together.
