That’s a wrap on the Natural Flood Management earthworks at Farnham Park, and just in time for the wet weather!💧

We installed a series of scrapes designed to slow the flow and temporarily store surface water, whilst creating a greater variety of seasonally wet habitats for wildlife. They form part of a wider effort to make the park more resilient to flooding, drought and climate change.

The newly worked areas will regenerate naturally, making use of the existing seedbank in the soil. Vegetation will begin re-establishing from next spring, with the seasonally wet habitats continuing to develop over the following years.

Last Friday we held our first Farnham Park NbS Safari, bringing people together to see the works in progress and hear more about the journey from project development through to delivery! And we aren’t finished: the next phase will be the installation of leaky barriers along the Nadder Stream this winter, with opportunities for volunteers to get involved.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to our fantastic project partners, contractors and volunteers, including volunteers from @lissarchaeology and the Farnham & District Metal Detecting Club who uncovered some fascinating finds.

Project delivered in partnership with @waverley_bc, @surreycountycouncil and @surreywildlifetrust, with support from Friends of Farnham Park and Farnham Biodiversity Partnership, and funded by the @envagency and Thames Regional Flood and Coastal Committee.

A restored pond at Fay Cottage Farm is the latest Natural Flood Management measure undertaken by the South East Rivers Trust (SERT) as part of the Gatwick Airport Natural Flood Management (NFM) project.

Working closely with the landowner, SERT designed a scheme that encourages water to flow into this historic pond during heavy rainfall, creating an offline storage area that reduces the risk of flooding downstream and creates new wet habitat for a range of native flora and fauna to flourish – the restored pond can hold an estimated 660,000 litres of water over an area of 1100m2!

Delivered in partnership with @gatwickairport as part of its second Decade of Change, this project demonstrates how collaborative action can build resilience for communities, wildlife and the wider environment.

🩷 It’s Gift Aid Awareness Day!

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our generous supporters - because of you, we’re able to make a real difference for rivers in the South East.

Did you know that you can increase the value of your donations to the South East Rivers Trust with Gift Aid? For every £1 that you donate to us, we can claim an extra 25p from the government in Gift Aid.

✅ It's as easy as ticking the Gift Aid box on the donation form, and it doesn't cost you a single penny.

How do donations help us? As a charity, we depend on donations and grants to enable us to restore rivers and wetlands, protect wildlife habitats, and connect communities and schools with nature.

But there’s so much more we need to achieve for rivers locally.

If you can, a donation to the South East Rivers Trust - particularly one boosted by Gift Aid - will enable us to continue and expand our vital work. We make every penny count.

Spaces limited!

Join us at Farnham Park this Friday to see Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in action.

We’ll tour the Natural Flood Management (NFM) works being delivered across the park, see NbS in practice and explore how collaboration can support our work at Farnham Park.

Led by SERT, Waverley Borough Council and our project team, the walk will visit the works around Deer Pond, Marshy Meadow and the Whitebottom winterbourne, as well as a section of the Nadder Stream where we’ll discuss the leaky barriers we’ll be installing with volunteers this winter.

We’ll look at what's being delivered, why these interventions were chosen and how they will help slow and store water, improve habitat and make the park more resilient to flooding, drought and climate change.

🕒 Friday 2nd October
⏰ 10:40am arrival for an 11:00am start - the event will end at around 1:00pm-1:30pm
📍Main Car Park, Farnham Park (off Folly Hill road)

💧This September, 300 nationally-endangered Water Voles returned to some of Surrey’s most beautiful riverside habitats between Frensham and Elstead, and we’re delighted to have played a part in this huge community effort.

This is the latest stage of an ambitious nature programme to bring back Water Vole - led by the National Trust, River Wey Trust and South East Rivers Trust, and funded by the Environment Agency.

Lewis Campbell, Catchment Manager (Mole and Wey rivers) at the South East Rivers Trust says:
“To see Water Voles thriving again in Surrey after several decades of absence is a brilliant testament to the hard work of the organisations, volunteers and landowners who have put so much effort into realising this vision of wildlife recovery. We look forward to offering our ongoing support in monitoring the continued success of Surrey’s own ecosystem engineers.”

Release sites included Surrey Wildlife Trust’s Thundry Meadows, the Hampton estate, Countryside Regeneration Trust’s Pierrepont Farm, The Land Trust’s Weyburn Meadows and people’s gardens along the river.

Surveys, wildlife cameras and eDNA testing have shown Water Voles settling in successfully on the upper stretches of the River Wey, following earlier reintroductions last autumn and spring.

Yesterday we spent the beautiful sunny afternoon strolling along the River Wandle for an interactive creative workshop with @dougshawart and @takeitupwearitout

Our time was spent exploring the River Wandle and our relationship with it. We talked about this rare nature habitat as we sketched, sewed and created handmade zines.

🌊 It's World Rivers Day! An opportunity to celebrate the world’s waterways and raise awareness of the threats they face.

The South East boasts a rich network of rare chalk streams, urban rivers, lowland waterways and wetlands which are home to a whole host of species.

But the data is clear: our rivers are in desperate need of our support.
❌ No single stretch of river in England or Northern Ireland is in good overall health
📉 Just 15% of English river stretches reach good ecological health standards
💧 Toxic chemicals that remain in ecosystems for decades pollute every stretch of English rivers

Thanks to the support of our donors, our brilliant staff and volunteers are actively restoring and protecting rivers across the South East through nature-based solutions, sustainable land management, community engagement and partnerships that help rivers, wildlife and people thrive.

Together we are helping rivers become cleaner, healthier and more resilient in a changing climate.

🌊 Join us THIS Saturday for a walk & talk on the River Wandle.

The River Wandle is a rare and precious chalk stream nature habitat which runs through our neighbourhood. How well do you know it? How often do you wander alongside it? How accessible and meaningful is the river to you?

Working with local London National Park City Rangers and artists Elly Platt and Doug Shaw, we invite you to join us and spend time sharing your understanding of the river, what it currently means to you and how you might like to see yours and the wider community's relationship with this unique nature space develop and improve.

Once the walk has concluded, you’ll be invited to curate your reflections into your own handmade zine 🖌️

Your thoughts and reflections will feed into Chalk Stream Connectors - a project designed to improve access to, understanding and appreciation of, chalk streams.

📅 Saturday 26th September
⏰ 1:45pm - 4:15pm

🌊 Your river needs 15 minutes of your time.

#BigRiverWatch starts today – and anyone can take part.

Last spring, 332 people across our South East region headed to their local rivers and completed 183 surveys. Together, they spent 83 hours observing our waterways and adding valuable information about wildlife, pollution and river health.

Now it’s your turn. 💙

Between 18–24 September:

📱 Download the free Big River Watch app
🌿 Find a river, stream or brook near you
👀 Watch for 15 minutes
🦆 Record the wildlife, plants and river conditions you see
✅ Submit your survey

No expertise needed – just curiosity and 15 minutes.

Every survey helps build a bigger picture of how our rivers are doing.

Which river will you be watching?
