Ah Autumn 🍂 our favourite.

So much to do, and our old friend Mother Nature keeps giving us more jobs, but so do our friends @poulterparkrevesbywood and we've begun a 'daylighting' project with them. For this we've teamed up with @southeastriverstrust who need our expertise in knocking dead trees over, we'll leave the river to them.

Still on catch up posts, this one is from the 14th, where I joined @dagmarakrzysztofiak and Dr Lizzie Wadsworth from @hssce_kingstonuni as we collected samples of water vole 💩 for a student DNA project.

This project is an example of #FutureSkills in action @kingstonuniversity. It arose from a research discussion started in the @citizenzoo Get Involed project group meeting which @biodiversityku is part of representing the Uni. It's now being tested in the feild.

The team including students have already had one site visit on the Hogsmill with @citizenzoo earlier. This was the second visit for the project. The hope is that students get to practice practical DNA analysis that can give them experience that can cross over into feilds such as forensics, while helping local nature conservation groups answer questions to improve real time on the ground conservation work. This work feeds into #LocalNatureRecivery.

Such a great afternoon with lots of positive signs of water voles.

On Thursday 22 October, Canterbury City Council will consider a motion to recognise the rights of the River Stour, including its right to flow, to remain free from pollution and to support native biodiversity.

The Kentish Stour flows through Canterbury and Stodmarsh, through the Lower Stour marshlands near Minster Marshes (where National Grid proposes to build its Sea Link converter station), and out to sea at Pegwell Bay (where National Grid proposes to bring a major subsea power cable ashore).

Although Canterbury’s declaration would only apply within its own jurisdiction, the motion calls for other local authorities across the Stour catchment to adopt similar protections.

At Monday's Full Council meeting, I challenged the administration to do better for Bromley's rivers, after this summer's awful pollution incidents. Pleased to say the Environment Portfolio Holder agreed to meet with both @thames21 and @southeastriverstrust .

Sampling riverflies in the sun. We counted cased and caseless caddis, olives, shrimp, and saw plenty of dragonfly larvae.

📣Fresh footage from our recent news! Our group helped release 300 watervoles back into the River Wey between Elstead and Frensham. These lovely pictures were captured in the rainy conditions by one of our committee members. Watervoles create the perfect riverbank habitat for amphibians, small mammals and pollinators which increases the biodiversity of the river protecting vulnerable species. The videos show both ‘soft releases’ (where sibling-groups of young watervoles in opened camouflaged cages are allowed to gently explore the riverbank at their own pace) and ‘hard’ releases where lone adults are released straight into the river.
The programme was funded by the Environment Agency, and was lead by The National Trust, The River Wey Trust and the South East Rivers Trust . A super collaboration between these leads and other local wildlife groups means nature wins when we all work together!

For those who signed this important petition to ban plastics from Kingston Cemetery, especially as a lot of these plastics end up in the nearby woodland and river habitats; please note this important meeting date on the 13th of October. If you can attend this meeting to support the petition it would really help.
Pls share widely.
