In Wednesday's SouthTalk, Kevin Harrell presents “They Won’t Die Alone: Incarcerated Caregivers and the Documentation of the Angola Prison Volunteer Hospice Program.” The Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola houses more than 5,000 men, about 85% of whom will die there. In 1998, isolation cells were repurposed as hospice rooms and volunteers from the prison population were trained to provide comfort, care, and last requests to dying patients. To raise money for the program, these incarcerated volunteers began sewing and selling quilts. These quilts—and the artists who create them—are the embodiment of creativity, care, and hope. The @visit_hnoc Historic New Orleans Collection’s recent exhibition, Captive State: Louisiana and the Making of Mass Incarceration, tracked the historical links between the institutions of slavery and mass incarceration that made Louisiana one of the most incarcerated places on earth. Although the exhibition was broad in historical scope, a dozen large-print black-and-white photographs by Philadelphia-based photographer Lori Waselchuk, documenting her time with Angola hospice workers, their patients, and families, formed an affecting centerpiece for visitors. Harrell, the exhibit curator, will discuss his own work documenting this program through oral history interviews with recently released men who participated in it and continue to shape its legacy. 🗓️ Wednesday, Nov. 4 🕛 noon 📍Barnard Observatory by @southernstudies
Dr. Tom Attah (@drtaukus) played at local venue Proud Larry’s recently. As a member of the Sociology and Southern Studies faculty, he not only studies the culture of the region, but participates and observes as he researches in the best traditions of Ethnography and Sociology. As a Black British Academic, he also observes how gender, blackness, and Otherness are received in academic and cultural spaces when they come from outside the region, and cultural certainty. "A lunch break is as much about rest as it is about eating," Alabama poet and musician Lee Bains @gloryfires said in yesterday's SouthTalk. Bains played guitar and read from "Work Lunch," his @hubcitywriters debut poetry collection that explores the multifaceted and often contradictory nature of Southern culture and values through the lens of food. "What my art is trying to deal with is that question of place. Pay close attention to a tangible experience," Bains said in yesterday's craft talk conversation with @maxissippi @exploradoracoffee. Stay tuned for the month of November with more SouthTalks events, including a film screening of "Natchez" with visiting documentarian Susannah Herbert at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, and Kevin Harrell's presentation about incarcerated caregivers at Angola at noon Wednesday, Nov. 4. by @southernstudies

You may have seen Lee Bains onstage, performing with his Southern rock band The Glory Fires @gloryfires. Now you'll get to experience him in a different way, through his poetry. In his SouthTalk at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 28, Bains presents “The Laborer Is Worthy of Their Hire: Stories and Sounds of Southern Solidarity,” based on his debut poetry collection "Work Lunch." The Alabama poet and musician draws on his own experience at the intersection of work and food—the daily ritual of a workday lunch. Poems and songs will glimpse sandwiches under shade trees, tables full of boisterous coworkers discussing barbecue, and reflective moments at meat-and-threes, all fertile ground for investigating Bains’s home places of Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia, the systems of power that shape life there, and the ways in which ordinary people survive, connect, and fight back. Later in the day, join him at 4:30 p.m. for a craft talk with Max Hipp @maxissippi @exploradoracoffee (463 Ryland Way). Hipp is the author of the short story collection "What Doesn’t Kill You Opens Your Heart," winner of the 2025 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award for fiction. Both the SouthTalk and craft talk are made possible by a partnership between @southernstudies @southernfoodways @umissenglish 🗓️ Wednesday, Oct. 28 SouthTalk at 🕛 noon in 📍 Barnard Observatory Craft Talk at 🕟 4:30 p.m. at📍Exploradora Coffee (463 Ryland Way) by @southernstudies
