It’s September, the season of trying again!
Here’s a month’s worth of little treasures! The world is so beautiful! I love my friends! I’m moving out of my house soon, and I’m sooooooo emo about it, despite it being 100% my choice and idea! Dolly Parton and Tim Curry! Formative influences, examples of lives well and generously lived! I tried new meds, and they work a treat! August came and went at exactly the right speed!

3 weeks on the mountain <3

2 years ago, after I finished Operafest as a singer/participant, Laura asked if I would join them as faculty. I was unsure- I don't have the fanciest resume (especially amongst the very excellent and accomplished faculty here), I'm young (although I suppose by some standards, as a soprano in her 30s, I'm basically a dessicated corpse… but still). Most of all, I didn't (and still don't, to be honest) feel all the way baked. I'm still cookie dough.

But Laura was persistent, and I'm glad she was. These past two summers of teaching have been so so deeply important to me. I've met friends I would never have encountered any other way, and discovered I have more to offer than I would have imagined. Nobody is ever finished, nobody ever feels totally ready, and the work is endless (thank god). Making music with you all is a gift I don't take for granted.

⚔️❤️⚔️

Giovanna D’Arco, Verdi. With @musishun at the keys. This opera was literally censored by the Vatican, which is probably the only reason it’s not more often performed with Joe Green’s other hits.

Jeanne d’Arc was only 19 when she was murdered, found ‘guilty’ of blaspheming (wearing men’s clothes), for acting on visions (once deemed holy, now called demonic), and for not submitting her words and deeds to the church. No attempt at rescue or ransom was made (after all, she was just a commoner, a woman with dreams above her station).

In this aria, she’s imagined before any of that; she prays to God to give her a helmet, and let her carry a sword to fight for her people. The music alternates between fierce war cries and more typical bel canto yearning.

I was struck & inspired by the strength required to dream of agency in a world that affords you none.

Anyways, that’s that on recital clips 😘. Hope this sends you down the same Jeanne D’Arc rabbit hole it sent me down (you can read her letters!). Have sword, will travel.

Hymnen an die Nacht, by Claude Vivier (the first bit of it, at least)

I am simply fascinated with this music, by Vivier’s language. The stillness of it, and the layers of colour, even in a work with just voice and piano like this.
