We visited the New York Botanical Garden @nybg to explore their extraordinary seaweed collection—one of the most important herbaria in the world, housing 177,400+ seaweed specimens and 55,000 cyanobacteria.

Founded in the early 20th century, the NYBG Seaweed Collection serves as a living archive of marine biodiversity. It preserves specimens from Columbia University @columbia and the American Museum of Natural History @amnh along with extensive collections from researchers worldwide. These herbaria document the diversity of seaweed ecosystems across the Atlantic, Pacific, and beyond—a scientific legacy encompassing generations.

Collections like these are irreplaceable. They allow researchers to track changes in marine ecosystems, understand species distributions, and document biodiversity in times of climate crisis. Without these carefully preserved specimens, we would lose our ability to study and protect the organisms that sustain our oceans.

Thank you so much Laura Briscoe (Collections Manager at NYBG) for welcoming us and sharing this incredible work with such generosity and expertise. Your passion for preserving marine knowledge and plant conservation inspires us to continue our work. Gracias to the entire NYBG team for making this possible taken in New York Botanical Garden by @soylaja

We participated in the final kelp harvest season of @seaweed_city removing dried kelp, cleaning grow lines, and preparing containers for the next season.

Seaweed City has been dedicated to kelp cultivation, harvesting, and water bioremediation at @governorsisland for over 5 years. Through giant seaweed farms, they work to restore marine ecosystems, absorb carbon, and protect coastlines.

We are happy to collaborate with initiatives like this that transform the relationship between the city and the ocean. In times of climate crisis, kelp cultivation is an act of care for our future.

Many thanks to @shan.mahmud @lukeeddins and the entire @seaweed_city team for making us part of this necessary and relevant work. And thanks to the collective energy of the enthusiasts and people from different disciplines who also participated. taken in Governors Island by @soylaja

We had the honor of visiting one of the most important seaweed collections in the world: the University Herbarium at UC Berkeley @ucberkeleyofficial , which contains over 80,000 specimens of marine seaweed from California, the Pacific Coast, and different parts of the world.

The collection, built over more than two centuries, safeguards incredible historical specimens, including seaweed from Chile, Patagonia, and the Juan Fernández Archipelago, collected and identified by the legendary Dr. Sylvia Earle. Additionally, it houses the Silva Center for Phycological Documentation and the Index Nominum Algarum, one of the most important databases in the world for seaweed taxonomy and nomenclature.

Beyond the specimens, what made this visit truly meaningful was meeting Kathy Ann Miller, Curator of Seaweed at UC Berkeley. Kathy Ann began studying seaweed in 1976 at the Bodega Marine Laboratory, and since then has dedicated her life to researching, teaching, collecting, and caring for marine seaweed. Her work on the California coast and the Channel Islands has been fundamental to contemporary phycology.

It was incredibly inspiring to discover her simplicity, warmth, thoughtful generosity, and deep love for seaweed. We talked for hours passionately about seaweed, the ocean, the current context we live in, the challenges, ways of recognizing nature, and the importance of sharing knowledge with all those who wish to participate.

This visit was a source of inspiration. This herbarium is not just a scientific collection: it is also a living archive of care, memory, and relationships with the ocean. taken in UC Berkeley by @soylaja
