well hey, thank you for being here.

as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed food and I have enjoyed creating art.

I feel comfortable in the kitchen and I was drawing before I could write.

I attended art classes at the Portland Art Museum as a kid, and I stood on a stool to reach the counter to cook family recipes.

my website @spabettie shares vibrant, plant based recipes for people who love food and don’t eat animals. these recipes are also gluten free, and most have substitutes for the top allergens.

@spabettie_ceramics shares my adventures in all things clay: wheel thrown or slab / hand built, and finished with my favorite glaze combinations. I have many favorites.

I am a voracious reader. I believe in science, that common sense is often at a premium, and I believe in the power of laughter. I love loud music and louder cars.

we have lost the plot.

this is real life, horrific events are happening, and if the murder of a couple and their dog AND a senator’s completely vile statement about murder does not repulse you to the point of screaming, how do we recover? what happened to the golden rule of do unto others as you would have them do unto you?

we keep hearing “if they’d do this to a senator, what will they do to YOU...”

that immigrants work in hospitality, and farm work, and as your house cleaners...

NO. these atrocities should not happen
REGARDLESS of the victim’s utility or status.

a senator is A PERSON like YOU are A PERSON and those detained ARE PEOPLE.

human beings are just that, human. not an arbitrary ranking system. we do not need to focus on the utility of an individual to know their value as a person, simply.

and every person is fundamentally guaranteed due process. and right to life. image is white text on black background:

Spicy zucchini hummus quesadillas were the quick and easy comfort food I needed for lunch today >>>>>

Chili crisp zucchini. Mmm.

if it’s so spicy it makes you cough while cooking, you’re doing it right.

add a thick layer of jalapeño hummus to half of a tortilla, and a thin “glue” layer of hummus on the other side. arrange the chili crisp zucchini on one side.

I used @kingharvestpnw jalapeño hummus - the BEST.

Fold the tortilla and put it back in the hot skillet…

The remaining chili oil gives a flavorful crispy finish.

a quick dipping sauce of cashew cream mayo and chili crisp completes this fabulousness.

it’s my favorite part of summer - tomato season! my garden tomatoes are *JUST* beginning to ripen, and I’m so ready for all the tomato toasts and sandwiches and just eating them warm from the vine and also, my favorite and yours - this easy tomato refrigerator jam recipe!

strawberry lemon rice crispy treats are absolutely satisfying a craving right now.

it felt odd use freeze dried strawberries when we have access to incredibly perfect Hood strawberries right now, and so many other tasty varieties… but that’s what works best in this recipe.

I save the fresh berries for snacking. 🍓🍓🍓

oh hi, June.

the last 48 days have been extremely difficult - thank you to everyone who left the kindest messages on the post about my dear brother, they mean so much.

May was already scheduled to the hilt with ceramic firings, which provided the best possible distraction and some incredible vibes, experiences, and pottery pieces!

this one is a favorite from @mantis_on_the_mantle ‘s reduction soda fire at @eastcreekart Chicken Cat… it was deliberately placed along the south wall for the juicy glassy action, and I love the contrasting bronzey goodness too.

tomorrow morning I head back into the studio with renewed focus, ideas, and motivation, and I truly cannot wait to sit at the wheel with a big hunk of porcelain.
