Japanese store-exclusive Hokusai wave logo tees from the mid-90s to the late-2010s.

I’ve been collecting these for some time and it’s been about two years since my last update on them. I don’t know, there’s just something very evocative to me about a Japanese city/neighborhood spelled out above the iconic Hokusai wave.

The latest grouping I’ve assembled reflects a wide range of Patagonia t-shirt blanks ranging from Beneficial T’s in the 90s to taggless organic cotton from the 2010s.

Spring 1999 Patagonia Printed Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T “Switchback: Lemon-Lime”

While they appear in the Spring 1999 employee workbook (which I unfortunately can’t share because reasons), three colorways of the legendary “Switchback” print are strangely absent from contemporary Patagonia retail catalogs and aren’t documented anywhere else as far I’m aware. “Lemon-Lime” is far and away the rarest (and most striking) of the three. But no one can really say why.

It’s often said that this was a Japan-exclusive colorway but I find this claim dubious. If this was the case, its appearance in an English-language workbook doesn’t make sense and one would instead expect it to show up in the Japanese Spring 1999 catalog (spoiler alert: it doesn’t). I also know of at least a couple of examples which were acquired from American original owners who purchased them domestically. As far as an explanation for its rarity and omission from the final seasonal lineup, I lean towards production issues preventing its wide release alongside the other two Spring 1999 “Switchback” colorways: “Vintage Green” and “Steel Blue”.

Adding to the lore on this piece is the fact that 1999 effectively marked the end of printed fleece for adults including the Printed Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T. The new millennium would see Patagonia lean towards solid colors and more subdued tones for its fleece offerings with few exceptions. Enthusiasts of the brand would have to wait until the early-2010s before prints came back in earnest.

But I digress. This is hands down one of the rarest Patagonia pieces out there and I’m in utter disbelief at having one in my possession.

SALMON SOLD

Fall 1994 Patagonia Penguino “Cobalt”

Fall 1997 Patagonia Salmon “Deep Under: Blueberry”

I’m incredibly stoked to own these as I’ve been looking for examples of the Patagonia stuffed animals to own for my personal collection after previously sourcing a deadstock Sea Turtle a while back.

In case you didn’t know, Patagonia made a series of stuffed animals out of leftover fleece from their production line. They were offered for a few years in the early to mid-1990s with each animal being produced for a single year. They were only offered in the kids clothing catalog as well as at select Patagonia retail locations. The animals offered were a Guanaco, Penguino, Sea Turtle and Salmon. While these were previously a quite obscure item, they’ve become more documented in recent years and are now more sought after than ever.

The Penguino and Salmon pictured here wear the “Deep Under” and “Sacajawea” prints. These prints alone have their own followings from their appearances on clothing which make these stuffed animals all the more interesting.

You’ll notice that my Penguino’s particular variation doesn’t appear in the catalog. It seems that, at least for the Penguino, they made a variety of color and print combinations which go beyond what was included in this spread.

A nice little trio of Patagonia Printed Spoonbill Caps I’ve accumulated over the years.

Made from the early-90s through the mid-2000s, the Spoonbill Cap was a hat style characterized by its wide, long brim and a low-profile crown. Effectively the counterpart to the long-running Duckbill Cap.

These came in four or five panel varieties and in a plethora of colors and prints. Sometimes with vented sides. They even did a Synchilla version that was short-lived.

Naturally, the prints are the most sought after for collectors. Furthermore, many, including myself, consider this model to be the best hats Patagonia has ever produced. It’s a real shame they’re no longer produced.

A nice pair of Patagonia A/C Print Shirts from the early/mid-90s.

There’s so much to like about these. From the variety of prints offered to the materials they used. All of which changed gradually throughout the years.

I’ve also found that depending on the year, the women’s shirts fit identically to the men’s only sized down. Which means you can wear a tasty loop collar with a killer print!

Fall 2001 Patagonia Chimera “Tequila Gold”

As I get deeper into this hobby, the more I find myself seeking out the more rare and unusual pieces from Patagonia’s storied catalog. The Chimera is a fantastic example of this.

Debuting in Fall 2001, it was a short-lived style that sports many unique features which set it apart from Patagonia’s long line of Synchilla pullovers. Most obvious is the intricate “etched” texture in the fleece which is very striking in person. The offset “slash” chest pocket and high collar also give it a presence that’s much different than what many are used to with the Snap-T.

In the years since it was quietly discontinued after 2002, the Chimera has become something of a cult favorite for Patagonia enthusiasts. They tend to fetch a premium regardless of color and are a real “if you know you know” piece.

Thus, am pleased to present my personal example which was graciously offered to me by @scottyfinds a while back. Swipe for the details and its debut in the Winter and Fall 2001 catalogs.

Spring 2008 Patagonia Reversible Snap-T - Special “UCP Camo/Natural”

Let’s get the story straight with these as there’s been lots of rumor and conjecture over the years. There’s no evidence for these ever having been part of Patagonia’s MARS project or was otherwise made for the military. The style number (11384) reflects this as it doesn’t begin with “19” like all other pieces of Patagonia military gear. However, the style number beginning with “1” and its “Special” designation denotes it as an SMU (special make up) piece. This leaves open the possibility that it was offered to military personnel via private purchase. It’s also likely that these ended up going to select Patagonia stores as well.

Regardless, this is simply one of the coolest pieces Patagonia has ever put out. The execution of digital camo on a deep pile reversible Snap-T gives it a slight edge which evokes not only military clothing but also the world of streetwear. This is just one of the reasons it’s become a top tier grail for Patagonia collectors and vintage clothing enthusiasts alike.

In recent months the market value on these has risen considerably with multiple sales nearing or exceeding $2,000USD depending on the size and color. While that makes parting with this example a very attractive prospect (especially given what I originally paid for it), it also pushes this piece further into the “I’ll never find another one” realm of my collection. For now at least, that’s enough to outweigh any dollar value and I’ll continue to wear it with supreme pride.

Made in 2023 to commemorate the brand’s 50th anniversary, these patch sets were made in limited quantities and only sent to Patagonia retail stores where they were given out at their discretion. Most simply ended up being circulated amongst employees or friends of the brand.

Fall 2003 Patagonia Classic Retro Cardigan “Green Hay”

This is one of a few “unseen” colorways of the Classic Retro Cardigan from its production run during 2000-2005. These “unseen” cardigans don’t appear in the seasonal catalogs from the era and often have SMU (special make-up) style numbers that don’t include an abbreviated season/year which makes them quite tricky to precisely date. “Green Hay” is no different with it being among the rarest Classic Retro Cardigans with its eye-catching colorway making it all the more desirable.

With the official colorway name being practically unknown until now, collectors have taken to using a few evocative nicknames including “Grinch” or “Oscar the Grouch” when referring to it. I prefer “Pistachio” due to the shade of green and its dark navy accents but that’s beside the point. Given these whimsical nicknames, the actual colorway, “Green Hay”, seems slightly underwhelming in comparison. This name was discovered by cross-referencing the Patagonia Kids catalog from Fall 2003 where it’s seen as a Kids’ Retro Cardigan colorway. The treatment on that piece is identical to this one even down to the grey zipper pulls.

The “Green Hay” Classic Retro Cardigan also features a few transitional details which I find very interesting. First of all, there are extra panels of wind blocking membrane on the interior that AFAIK is unique (it doesn’t appear on other cardigans I’ve studied). Secondly, the fabric pocket zipper pulls are typically seen on early cardigans from 2000-2003. Lastly, the plastic/metal main zipper, nylon size tag and Mexican production definitely make it a later cardigan from 2003-2005.
