Happy World Poetry Day to all who celebrate 🖋️✨🩸 In honor of this beloved holiday, I’m sharing a few more sneaky-peaks from under “Ink and Iron’s” cover and a little how it’s going vs. how it started

Writing/poetry has cushioned my human existence for the entirety of my life. Other people’s words have shaped and challenged the way I move and exist in this world. Ink and Iron is in some ways a love letter to writing. I have difficulty claiming a title like writer/poet but writing is/always has been a life-source. It’s how I take in and spit out life. It’s like thinking or breathing, which is part of why I have difficulty claiming any sort of credit for it. All I feel like I’m doing is existing, doing what everyone else does every day, I just happen to put down some thoughts somewhere where they won’t be lost (temporarily) for some reason. As I’ve grown older, as we do, I’ve made a decision to no longer move in this world as if writing isn’t what it is to me. As if it isn’t an abysmal part of me, something that’s kept me alive, as if other people don’t have the same thoughts.

Everything is poetry. I also hold firm that poetry must be unbearably honest. So honest you can smell the rusty-blood when you look back and read it. I’m not delicate with my writing by any means. I wouldn’t consider anything I write “pretty poetry.” It’s often an excruciating process. It’s often an exorcism. I refuse to call something finished until I’ve bled all over it. I’ll stick a pen directly into my fucking vein if I have to. T.S. Eliot once spoke, “the purpose of literature is to turn blood into ink.” This is the purpose behind my pen. I bleed when I write, and I write when I bleed.

I began Ink and Iron 7 years ago while heavily and egregiously drinking, like most poets. 🤪 With an early diagnosis of cirrhosis of the liver, I think Big Buk would be proud. 🤭 7 years later Ink and Iron is finished. Completed with sober and more loving, more honest hands. Sobriety does not take away your ability to create honestly. Addiction doesn’t plant the seed of creativity, or what lives inside of you, it just feels like it waters it…I’ve found that blood helps it grow a lot stronger🩸 taken in Kansas City, Missouri by @spazzlaska

I wrote this piece several years ago, it will be in Ink and Iron©️ sister book in the future, however with us creeping up on Halloweenie I thought this might be (somewhat) fitting! 😈

I just wanted to post this to “The Grid”, because I am just so honored and so in awe of @alilovesthelibrary artistry!!! I have always wished there was some art to go along with my so-called “poetry”, so this is genuinely a dream come true for me. 🥹 Thank you so much for allowing this piece to resonate, so much so, you made this bonkers bad ass piece of art!! I must return to my roots. And by that I mean; I must begin planting them. (Which is like peeling off the skin of the seed in order to plant it, but whatever 🤪😮‍💨). Ouchie.

Photo snagged from the Googs, unsure where else it’s from however I’m happy to give credit!! Also would love some artwork along with this poem (and all of my so called “poems!”), however have been slacking in the “art” department as of late. 🥴 Maybe someday I’ll have some art with my “poems”.
