Join us next Thursday (October 22nd) at 7:00 pm for the kickoff of our Faith & Life lecture series, where Corey Koskie will be presenting on Faith and Baseball: Life After the Twins.

Cordel Leonard “Corey” Koskie (born June 28, 1973) is a Canadian former professional baseball third baseman, who played in Major League Baseball for the Minnesota Twins, Toronto Blue Jays, and Milwaukee Brewers. On February 4, 2015, Koskie was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Formerly a Minnesota Twins third baseman, Koskie has openly integrated his Christian faith into his life and career, finding strength through it during his playing days and his subsequent battle with post-concussion syndrome. He has maintained connections with faith-based athletic outreach, such as participating in events with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, where he has shared his testimony and experiences regarding leadership, legacy, and overcoming adversity. He won the Carl R. Pohlad Award for Outstanding Community Service in 2001 and the Kirby Puckett Award for Outstanding Alumni Community Service in 2018 and still makes Minnesota his home, while remaining very involved in the Twin Cities community.

Join St. Philip the Deacon for our 2nd Annual Fall Habitat for Humanity Build. No experience necessary!

This fall, we’ll return to the Minnetonka Mills site to continue work on another new-construction twin home that began in mid-July. By October, the project is expected to be in the middle stages of construction, with much of our work likely focused on outdoor projects as the homes move toward being enclosed and ready for colder weather. There may also be opportunities for interior work.

Projects will depend on construction progress, weather, and the needs of the site supervisor, but may include framing, roofing, sheathing, window installation, insulation, drywall, interior rough-in, and other general construction tasks. As always with Habitat, come ready to learn, lend a hand, and enjoy working together!

12-15 volunteers are needed each day. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older. We will work one week, Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. You do not have to work every day of the week - choose the dates that you can participate. Hammer on!

SPD had a blast on the Free Bikes 4 Kidz donation day! We are so grateful to everyone who donated bikes to help kids in need ride into a happier and healthier life.

Special thanks to Tom Hecht, John Soholt, Leslie Anderson, and members of the Pathfinders group for helping receive the bikes (and maybe test them out!).

What are you grateful for? It’s a deeply personal question, yet there are undoubtedly overarching themes, like the joy of breathing in fresh air, savoring a recipe passed down through generations, and cherishing moments spent with those we love.

SPD invites you to join us on Sunday, October 18th at 2:00 pm as Cantus (@cantussings) presents Simple Gifts, a performance that weaves together personal stories of gratitude along with beloved tunes including “How Can I Keep From Singing” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, timeless classics from Jean Sibelius and Jennifer Higdon, and contemporary gems by Bobby McFerrin and Sydney Guillaume. The result is a poignant and heartfelt program filled with energy and beauty that uplifts, inspires, and reminds us of what we hold most dear.

Tickets can be purchased at cantussings.org

Over the past month, we’ve loved seeing our kids gather together for Sunday School, listen to the children’s message, and learn and grow together. We’re grateful for the joy, curiosity, and energy our kids bring to SPD each week, and we’re excited for all that this year of Sunday School has in store!

Let us welcome the newly baptized: Charles John!

We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God’s creative and redeeming word to all the world. We welcome you into the Lord’s family. We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, children of the same heavenly Father, and workers with us in the kingdom of God.

“Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” -Matthew 5:16

Join us on Monday, October 5th, for Water from a Deep Well Part 1: The Early Church.

Understanding the history of the church and how people have been shaped as disciples of Jesus over the centuries is a well-spring for our lives with God today. Amanda Berger will facilitate this multi-part series as we explore the deep legacy of faith and Christian practice that is ours as followers of Jesus. Part one will focus on the early church during the Roman era and through the foundations of Christian monasticism in the 4th century. Based on the book "Water from a Deep Well" by Dr. Gerald L. Sittser.
