Today was a huge moment for Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve. 🌿🌊

The Florida House unanimously passed SB 302 with a 109–0 vote, adding strong protections that help ensure this incredible bay will not become a cruise ship port.

More importantly, this shows that our voices are being heard.

All the calls, emails, and petitions from people who care about Terra Ceia made a real impact. When communities speak up and show their representatives what matters to them, it can lead to real action.

This happened because so many of you took the time to call your representatives, sign petitions, and stand up for this place. Thank you all so much ❤️.

Today is proof that when people come together to protect something they love, it can make a difference. Terra Ceia is still here, and that’s worth celebrating. 🌿🌊

To say that it was difficult would be a huge understatement. Driving 100 miles offshore at night in thunderstorms, not fun, sleeping in 6-8’ waves, not fun, intermittent waves coming over the bow while you’re trying to sleep, not fun, vomiting randomly throughout the night and while diving the next day, super not fun. Dealing with sharks as big as my truck… uhm… extra not fun. But here’s the deal, the St Pete Open is the largest Spearfishing tournament in the world. It’s go big or go home. I had to push through. Plus, it’s literally been a bucket list dream for me to win overall female for decades. Not gonna lie, I’m quite disappointed but I gave it all I had. I’m not a young pup anymore and I knew this was my last chance. So 2nd it is.
I put on tanks just a month ago having only been Freediving for several years. I knew there would be dangers. But @_mexicomatt & @mark_dewaine had my back. They literally warded off sharks and had their eyes on me on every drop. And watching them spear was really something. They brought up massive stringers and rarely missed a shot. I was definitely with the right crew.
In the end, I ranked 23 out of 145 that turned in fish while another 50 didn’t I think. While I didn’t fulfill my dream, I did really well. Not bad for this 60 year old granny.
Onward and upward. I’ve got the USA Women’s Spearfishing Team to manage and help prepare for the world championships in Brazil this November. That too is another dream to fulfill. I want so much for our strong women to perform at their peak not only for themselves, but more importantly for our dive community and country 🇺🇸

CMAS World Spearfishing Championship 2025

Big thanks to the women who made this possible and to everyone who supported from the scouting to the final weigh-ins. I’ll be rolling out more reels and recaps over the next several days as I sift through hundreds of photos and clips.

Our scouting team was instrumental as conditions worsened approaching the tournament. Huge credit to:

Day 1 — Zone B
Visibility: Mostly 1–3 feet in a small shooting zone. Only four women weighed in fish, with @rosibelspeara earning a notable contribution on Day 1. Her Day 1 points were pivotal to securing our silver overall. A standout performance that set the tone for the event.

Day 2 — Zone A
Visibility: Slightly better in the early hours.
Zone size: Larger, with more fish observed.
Only eight women weighed in fish, including @annahiltonnn and @laurensarasua.
Lauren: weighed in the largest fish. Anna: had the most fish. Early morning catches provided a major relief for the team.
Rosibel also landed a fish just minutes before the end. Our scale weighed it at 515 grams, but the official scale did not pass it, which was disappointing.

The women’s field fought incredibly hard under challenging conditions, and every mark of their performance contributed to our 2nd-place finish. I’ve long believed, and I’ll say it again: it truly takes a village. Scouting, data collection, leadership, and strategy all play a huge role alongside skilled, fearless athletes.
Our team logged in excess of 100 drops per day. This year, Brazil presented blackout visibility, rocky shores, and a turbulent ocean—watching the team navigate that with grit was unreal.
To all the athletes: you are all winners, and you’re every captain’s dream.

Missing Islamorada 😭 when can we go back @spearavida ?!! I was asked this week of a time which inspired me the most and this was the memory I shared. It was just so beautiful and I learnt so much that day about scouting and finding fish with @galacticwatertemple by my side (as we were dragged around over the reef haha!)

To say I’m excited about this trip is the understatement of the year. I learned there was a Mexican Sardine Run from none other than Shannon @brightbuoydiving. This is just a glimpse of what I may encounter on this exciting adventure. The possibility of diving with orcas is just icing on the cake 🤞… bucket list #1 ✅. I’m no fan of freezing temperatures so a trip south of the border made this a no brainer.

PSA 📢. Clearly, I eat a ton of fish. But I became reckless eating one of my favorites as a staple. My @function health results came back and they weren’t good. I have a very high mercury concentration and poor kidney counts as well. It’s not catastrophic, but warrants immediate action. No seafood for me for a while.
The main culprit is Almaco Jack, especially the larger ones I shot in Costa earlier this year (I’ve been eating twice a week for months). The larger the pelagic, the higher the mercury. Lesson learned.
I’ll still eat pelagic fish, but in moderation, and only after two months of land based protein. I need to purge.
I felt it important to educate others on the high mercury count in pelagic fish: Tuna, Jacks, Mackerel, etc…. Everything in moderation.
The health department actually contacted me directly because they received the report directly, due to a possible contamination issue and public health concern. It wasn’t a pleasant conversation. I’ll report back to them in a few weeks. I’m still in disbelief. Regardless, I have no adverse symptoms and should be fine.
Hopefully, this post will prevent others from making my mistakes. 🙏
Thankful for quick results from Function Health which revealed this serious issue. Otherwise, I could have been in serious trouble.
