THIS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24!

HAVE A CHEAP DAY!
A DISCOUNT LOVE LETTER TO BUILDING 19

AUTHOR’S TALK + BOOK SIGNING + Q&A
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 | NOON–2PM

FREE TO ATTEND — ALL ARE WELCOME!

If you grew up in New England, chances are you remember Building 19. The legendary discount chain was as famous for its questionable merchandise and bargain-basement prices as it was for its brilliantly bizarre, irreverent advertising.

Join us this Saturday at spec•i•men as we welcome Randy Cogill and Tripp Underwood, authors of Have a Cheap Day: An Archive of the Golden Age of Building 19 Advertising, for a special afternoon celebrating one of New England’s most beloved—and wonderfully strange—retail institutions.

Hosted by former Building 19 manager and vendor Dave Williams of Pantry + Bench.

Both South Shore natives and lifelong Building 19 fans, Randy and Tripp spent years researching, collecting, and preserving the store’s outrageous advertising legacy. Their book brings together decades of vintage ads, cartoons, pop culture parodies, and wonderfully offbeat humor, much of it created by legendary Building 19 illustrator Mat Brown.

Part advertising history, part regional nostalgia, and part underground comic art, Have a Cheap Day is a tribute to the creative genius behind a truly one-of-a-kind New England institution.

Come meet the authors, hear the stories behind the book, ask some questions, and get your copy signed!

Old to the New, New to the Old…

BANNED IN DC — original pressing with Red Band cover meets the brand-new hardcover reissue from Beyond the Streets!

One of the first (and most collectable) books on punk rock published in the States, BANNED IN DC captures Washington, DC’s 1979–85 punk underground through photographs, flyers, and firsthand stories. Assembled by Cynthia Connolly, Leslie Clague, and Sharon Cheslow, it documents Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Faith, Void, Scream, and the community that made it happen.

A photographer, artist, and longtime participant in DC’s DIY scene, Connolly worked at Dischord Records, booked shows at d.c. space, and created the iconic black sheep artwork for Minor Threat’s Out of Step. She originally self-published BANNED IN DC through her own Sun Dog Propaganda imprint in 1988.

This first-ever hardcover edition from BTS features 188 pages and more than 700 images, including high-resolution, full-color scans of the original flyers and additional details throughout. DIY history, preserved for the next generation.

Both Available Now at spec•i•men.

ROCK STEADY FOR LIFE: BRINGING BREAKDANCING TO THE WORLD
Richard “Crazy Legs” Colón & The Rock Steady Crew
Rizzoli, 2026

Been patiently awaiting this one since it was announced, and I have to say, it does not disappoint.

Breaking has always been a sometimes overlooked and underappreciated pillar of Hip-Hop culture, despite its enormous influence on music, fashion, art, and modern street style. Few people have done more to bring that culture to the world than Crazy Legs and the legendary Rock Steady Crew.

Rock Steady for Life celebrates over 50 years of B-boy history through rare photography, archival material, and firsthand stories tracing the crew’s rise from the Bronx to worldwide recognition.

Props to Crazy Legs and the entire RSC for this one. Respect is always due.

AVAILABLE NOW AT spec•i•men. Come dig.

Sometimes life comes full circle! Shoutout to the mega-talented Gregory Titus for bringing Czarface face-to-face with my dog Pepper for this exclusive cover! A while back, I played a small hand in helping Gregory find his latest canine, Mace, through the Hotel for Homeless Dogs and now he’s returning the love by putting my own 4-legged friend alongside the Chrome Crusader himself! This is a really special cover to me! #czarface #comics #dogs by @spec.i.men.studios

FANTASTIC FOUR!!!

Want to give a quick shout-out to everyone who came through this past Sunday for our CZAR COMICS in-store at spec•i•men!

A sold-out event, a packed house, and a pretty great day all around.

Always great getting together with my guys 7LES, and especially great to finally meet our surprise guest, Gregory Titus, in the flesh after having worked together on projects in the past.

And, of course, the true star of the show—and the catalyst behind our exclusive variant cover—the majestic MACE WINDU!!!

Huge thanks to the CZAR COMICS GROUP, the old crew, new friends, and shop regulars who came out to support. The response was overwhelming, and on behalf of everyone involved, I really can’t thank you all enough.

I was too busy running around to take any decent pictures, so please keep tagging us in yours!

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming...

* JUST IN — MONSTERAMA! *

Very excited to offer the FULL RUN of MONSTERAMA ZINES — Issues #1–6, imported direct from the UK, including the brand-new FULL-COLOR ISSUE #6!

Created by illustrator and tattoo artist Allan Graves, Monsterama is a gloriously obsessive celebration of all things horror—drawing inspiration from classic monster movies, vintage horror magazines, drive-in ads, comics, tattoo art, pulp illustration, video-store culture, and plenty of other weird stuff that probably warped us at an impressionable age.

Graves mixes vintage horror graphics and imagery with work from contemporary artists around the world, packing the pages with monsters, vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghouls, ghosts, creatures, panicked pin-ups, and general horror ephemera.

Think Famous Monsters of Filmland, EC and Warren horror, old exploitation ads, VHS boxes, tattoo flash, and the stuff you’d find buried in the back pages of some magazine you probably weren’t supposed to be looking at as a kid.

Earlier issues are packed with 100 pages of predominantly black-and-white horror goodness, while the newly released MONSTERAMA #6 takes things one step further as the series’ brand-new ALL-COLOR MEGA ISSUE.

Imported direct from the UK and exactly the kind of independently published weirdness we like having around here.
