Lastly to highlight, Aotearoa animation hometown hero Simon Ward @simonmward will have his work shown at Kiriata me Puoro TONIGHT at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland.

Need I even introduce Simon? His work breaks boundaries across animation, filmmaking, music, VHS tomfoolery and anything else you can think of.

Alongside various random short films, art exhibitions, and collaborations with Jess Johnson @flesh_dozer , Simon has made astounding music videos for the likes of Princess Chelsea, The Phoenix Foundation, MOKOTRON and many more.

I first discovered his work through the music video for Ammamelia’s ‘Colourbox’, and I immediately fell in love. The way he’s merged nostalgia with cutting edge animation and experimentation is a sight to behold, and I can’t wait to see it on the big screen at Double Whammy tonight with the equally insane Grecco Romank @greccoromank.

Still a few tickets available on UTR, then it’s all door sales. by @speckcomics

Lose your mind with Grecco Romank @greccoromank, performing with visuals from Simon Ward @simonmward at Kiriata me Puoro TOMORROW, Saturday the 16th of November at Double Whammy.

Grecco Romank are cooked. They’re groovy (@hiri_music ‘s words), funny, gothic, industrial, experimental and a bit terrifying.

Thanks to old mates @95bfm loyally playlisting half of their discography since the release of their debut record ‘Red Tower’ in 2021, Grecco has slowly become one of my favourite electronic acts in Aotearoa of all time. Bangers like ‘Celestial Poison’, ‘Human Bin’, and the brilliant ‘Piss Baby’ are borderline anthemic tracks designed to make you dance, sing, scream, laugh, and maybe cry.

Bringing them together with Simon Ward was another no-brainer, especially considering how much the two wanted to work with each other. It’ll be mad - you don’t want to miss this.

GA tickets are still available on UTR till tomorrow evening, then tickets will be a bit pricier on the door. Get tf in. by @speckcomics

Feel your mind melt away with the stunning animated visuals of Spencer Hall @spencerhallnz, showing this Saturday the 16th at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland for Kiriata me Puoro.

If you’re at all involved in the Aotearoa comics scene, you know Spencer’s work. If you’re in the music scene , you’ve probably seen it as well. The animator and filmmaker has been creating mind-bending visuals for the likes of T.G Shand, Cowboy Machine, and more.

I first became familiar with his work through his submissions to SPECK Issue Two and various zines of his that would pop up around the motu. Every piece of his is a surrealist, organised mess of wonder where humour is combined with insane artistic skills and a keen eye for colour and form.

I’m absolutely psyched to pair him up with 花溪 Flowerstream @huaxiflowerstream for this gig - their work is equally surrealist and intriguing, and I can’t wait to show you all what they have in store.

GA going fast on @undertheradarnz - prices will increase on the door so get in quick. by @speckcomics

Hear the lush, experimental and dreamy sounds of guzheng/drums duo 花溪 Flowerstream @huaxiflowerstream at Kiriata me Puoro on November 16th at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland.

花溪 Flowerstream is one of the most interesting bands Tāmaki Makaurau has to offer right now, pulling aspects from every genre imaginable to create soundscapes through relatively minimal instrumentation and intentional sparseness. The pair has recently come off of tours around China, Europe, and most recently Aotearoa where they stunned crowds in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtepoti, Ōtautahi and Te-Whanganui-a-Tara.

Their live shows combine the atmospheric vastness and brilliance of their debut EP ‘Flowers Dream’ and the experimental chaos of their new material, backed up by incredible visuals and expressions of creativity through every aspect of their sets. Combined the the surreal animation mahi of Spencer Hall @spencerhallnz , their set at Kiriata me Puoro will showcase the duo in their element. You will not want to miss this.

Earlybird tickets sold out, GA going fast at @undertheradarnz - door sales will be pricier so get in quick xx taken in Whammy Bar by @speckcomics

See the wonderful work of animator/illustrator Maya K Templer @mktempler at Kiriata me Puoro - an animation and music festival taking place at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland on the 16th of November.

Maya’s work has been astounding me for years. We first met when she sent through a submission to SPECK Issue One that made its way onto the cover of the zine - swipe for a proud little freshly 18 year old me showcasing her work!

The Pōneke born, Meanijn based animator has been striking the balance between zines, animation, and music for years, having made music videos for Fraser McCarthy and Thomas Isbister. If you’ve been to a gig in Ōtautahi in the past few years, you’ve probably seen her work on the poster.

Mayas work is playful, creative, and hilarious - just like the music of Lips @lipssongs . Can’t wait to see what they’ve been cooking up together.

Earlybird tickets are VERY low - afterwards it’s GA and pricier door tickets. Grab them at @undertheradarnz if you’re cool. by @speckcomics

Stoked to have LIPS @lipssongs performing at Kiriata me Puoro on the 16th of November at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland.

I first saw these guys at a music/comedy festival in 2022 at Q Theatre - a show which was weird, but very cool. Most of the band came from the back of the auditorium, playing unplugged guitars and yelling backing vocals as Steph Brown performed Sometimes I’m Afraid to a crowd of mildly confused but happy punters.

Their 2021 album, “I Don’t Know Why I Do Anything”, is one of the best of this decade so far. Each song has its own level of intensity, swinging between punk rock to electronica to folk and everything in between. They were the first band I had in mind when I sussed this project, and I can’t wait to share what they have in store with you all.

Lips is playing with accompanied animation by @mktempler - will share more about her mahi soon 🫡

Misheard Records, Strange News Touring, and SPECK COMICS present Kiriata me Puoro, an animation-meets-music festival taking place at Double Whammy in Tāmaki Makaurau on the 16th of November.

Early bird tickets available NOW from Under The Radar (link in bio).

It’s time to smash the arts, animation, and music scenes of Tāmaki Makaurau into one mighty shindig of an alternative arts exhibition. Auckland Zinefest’s Best Of The Fest/Best Comic Zine winner SPECK COMICS has joined forces with the newly minted Misheard Records and Strange News Touring to launch Kiriata me Puoro, a one-night mini-festival extravaganza of animation and music.

Three of the most innovative bands to come out of Tāmaki Makaurau in recent years have been paired up with animators across the motu, collaboratively developing stage visuals for a series of unique live sets accompanied by spectacular animated displays - telling stories, accompanying music, and immersing the audience into a weird multimedia art exhibition that expands upon what small gigs in Aotearoa could be.
