HORRIBLE INDEPENDENT COMIC ZINE FROM AOTEAROA BY @liamhanse.n @stellyvision AND A BUNCH OF COOL AND GOOD ARTISTS

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

GUESS WHAT WE ARE RELEASING AN ALBUM!!! It comes out on October 10 and this is what the cover looks like, and it comes with an activity/song book and both those things are designed by Maya Templer who is really clever and good at art. Maya is originally from Ōtautahi but she lives in Brisbane and we feel super lucky to have met and be working with her - its thanks to @speckcomics who hooked our adult band @lipssongs up with Maya for a rad little music animation festival last year. Check out more Maya art at @mktempler and stay tuned for news about our album!!!

This year I:
• Publicly came out as trans
• Started HRT
• Travelled to Tokyo with @yellowhat24
• Finally released my four-year old lockdown album
• Made a new album called Empathy for My Future Self (I'm so fucking excited to release it and play shows with my beautiful band @velveteenshakes, @themightybooth_, @chunder.kat, @jayp.mp3, & @newton.louis) 💕
• Ran the social media for @debate_mag
• Finally tabled with my brother @eddiemonotone at @otautahi_zinefest
• Started working on a comic anthology magazine I'm running next year (obligatory @neglectcomics plug)

For the first time in a long time, I actually feel like a real person, and I can't wait for next year 💚

The comic panels throughout this post are excerpts from a comic for @ratworldmagazine Issue Eight, I can't believe it's nearly been three years of Rat, @selcouthbird & @aidandayvyd are legends 🐀

Fighting back the temptation to be mushy about Saturday night - for now I’ll say this:

I am so fucking astounded with everyone involved in this concert. As much as there was troubleshooting and last-minute wrangling, everyone I worked with along the way was absolutely amazing, helpful, kind and tolerant - dealing with my indecisiveness with a smile on their face. Ka pai to @onlyscratchingthesurface and @jimbo_tapp for day one flatmate support from the moment I got the funding from @blackbird.foundation and @aklcityofmusic (both amazing in their own right) to the night of the show, manning merch alongside my wonderful partner @hiri_music who drove me to the show, helped me grab supplies, helped provide feedback and did so so much more to make this happen.

Ngā mihi to Lucy, Mason and the whole @whammybarauckland team, to Taylor MacGregor @party_dad_ for the support from day one and especially Matthew Crawley @mistercrawley @strangenewstouring for helping in every aspect to the show - helping acquire funding, spreading the word, lending invaluable advice and manning the doors on the day.

Of course, thank you to @huaxiflowerstream + @spencerhallnz, @lipssongs + @mktempler, and @grecoromank + @simonmward for being the core part of this project, working together so incredibly well and taking this project as well as I could’ve asked for. I may be going mushy now, but that’s my bad.

I am absolutely being overdramatic about this, but I want weird events like this to be something we can look back on as major projects of the year for musicians, animators, and creative people in general. Strange experiments like this, founded out of a desire to see what happens when animators are given an artists set lists as inspiration to do whatever they wanted with. To showcase that in a room full of people , taking in the visuals while dancing to such amazing music, is all I’ve ever wanted. Gigs are pieces of art. Get weird with it.

Doing another semi-private gig for kirihimete next month, whichll be way smaller but cool as. Will get back to bigger stuff in the new year, hopefully. Aroha nui <33

Lastly to highlight, Aotearoa animation hometown hero Simon Ward @simonmward will have his work shown at Kiriata me Puoro TONIGHT at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland.

Need I even introduce Simon? His work breaks boundaries across animation, filmmaking, music, VHS tomfoolery and anything else you can think of.

Alongside various random short films, art exhibitions, and collaborations with Jess Johnson @flesh_dozer , Simon has made astounding music videos for the likes of Princess Chelsea, The Phoenix Foundation, MOKOTRON and many more.

I first discovered his work through the music video for Ammamelia’s ‘Colourbox’, and I immediately fell in love. The way he’s merged nostalgia with cutting edge animation and experimentation is a sight to behold, and I can’t wait to see it on the big screen at Double Whammy tonight with the equally insane Grecco Romank @greccoromank.

Still a few tickets available on UTR, then it’s all door sales.

Lose your mind with Grecco Romank @greccoromank, performing with visuals from Simon Ward @simonmward at Kiriata me Puoro TOMORROW, Saturday the 16th of November at Double Whammy.

Grecco Romank are cooked. They’re groovy (@hiri_music ‘s words), funny, gothic, industrial, experimental and a bit terrifying.

Thanks to old mates @95bfm loyally playlisting half of their discography since the release of their debut record ‘Red Tower’ in 2021, Grecco has slowly become one of my favourite electronic acts in Aotearoa of all time. Bangers like ‘Celestial Poison’, ‘Human Bin’, and the brilliant ‘Piss Baby’ are borderline anthemic tracks designed to make you dance, sing, scream, laugh, and maybe cry.

Bringing them together with Simon Ward was another no-brainer, especially considering how much the two wanted to work with each other. It’ll be mad - you don’t want to miss this.

GA tickets are still available on UTR till tomorrow evening, then tickets will be a bit pricier on the door. Get tf in.

Feel your mind melt away with the stunning animated visuals of Spencer Hall @spencerhallnz, showing this Saturday the 16th at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland for Kiriata me Puoro.

If you’re at all involved in the Aotearoa comics scene, you know Spencer’s work. If you’re in the music scene , you’ve probably seen it as well. The animator and filmmaker has been creating mind-bending visuals for the likes of T.G Shand, Cowboy Machine, and more.

I first became familiar with his work through his submissions to SPECK Issue Two and various zines of his that would pop up around the motu. Every piece of his is a surrealist, organised mess of wonder where humour is combined with insane artistic skills and a keen eye for colour and form.

I’m absolutely psyched to pair him up with 花溪 Flowerstream @huaxiflowerstream for this gig - their work is equally surrealist and intriguing, and I can’t wait to show you all what they have in store.

GA going fast on @undertheradarnz - prices will increase on the door so get in quick.

Hear the lush, experimental and dreamy sounds of guzheng/drums duo 花溪 Flowerstream @huaxiflowerstream at Kiriata me Puoro on November 16th at Double Whammy @whammybarauckland.

花溪 Flowerstream is one of the most interesting bands Tāmaki Makaurau has to offer right now, pulling aspects from every genre imaginable to create soundscapes through relatively minimal instrumentation and intentional sparseness. The pair has recently come off of tours around China, Europe, and most recently Aotearoa where they stunned crowds in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtepoti, Ōtautahi and Te-Whanganui-a-Tara.

Their live shows combine the atmospheric vastness and brilliance of their debut EP ‘Flowers Dream’ and the experimental chaos of their new material, backed up by incredible visuals and expressions of creativity through every aspect of their sets. Combined the the surreal animation mahi of Spencer Hall @spencerhallnz , their set at Kiriata me Puoro will showcase the duo in their element. You will not want to miss this.

Earlybird tickets sold out, GA going fast at @undertheradarnz - door sales will be pricier so get in quick xx
