ANCIENT CIRCUITRY | X AVANT XXI: Memory Mannnnn 🔊

For our third and last night of X Avant, Mani Mazinani presents his Solar Organ with the Solar Organ Ensemble.

Mani Mazinani (b.1984, Tehran) is a Toronto-based artist making installation, video, film, sculpture, photographs, multiples, sound and music. His practice evolved from an early interest in sound recording, now working with the process of translating thoughts into recordings in various media. His visual work thinks about scale and perception, often combining subject matter and medium. Mazinani has been researching origins of ancient thought, perceptual limitations of humans, and improvisation.

He developed the Solar Organ in the Connected Minds artist residency at York University. Exhibition and performance history includes Evergreen Brick Works (2024), MOCA Toronto (2024), Tate Modern (2019), The Bentway, Toronto (2018), Tehran International Electronic Music Festival (2017), SIP Culture Centre, Suzhou (2016).

Solar Organ is a polyphonic sound generation machine, designed to produce tuned sound fields and playable as a pentatonic musical instrument by anyone regardless of training. Its inventor, Mani Mazinani is joined by Amahl Arulanandam (cello), Steve Kado (visuals), Brandon Valdivia (percussion), Marilyn Yogarajah (trumpet) to form the Solar Organ Ensemble.

Solar Organ Ensemble performs music built on pentatonic music ideas, using traditional and invented scales, moving through composed and improvised forms. Pentatonic music practice is a universal phenomenon in human experience, globally ubiquitous geographically and historically. Solar Organ collects research that connects music to our biology, to engage in what is universal between us all.

marilyn yogarajah is a toronto poet and musician, curates audiopollination and spectrum soundbath, plays in multiple bands in the city, and has a background in teaching music.

Brandon Miguel Valdivia is a drummer, percussionist, composer and producer living in London, Ontario. Known for performing and recording with Lido Pimienta, improvisatory work with Not the Wind Not the Flag, and recording with artists such as U.S.Girls, Th by @spectrumsoundbath

Kicking off the final week of Back to School Field Trip, we’re honoured to present the debut of ‘Otherwise’, an experimental documentary film by Mike Filippov. Having carefully and diligently captured our local scene of experimental artists over the past few years, his improvised film on free improvisation comes to life on our DIY screen at Bickford Park, featuring live accompaniment from Heraclitus Akimbo and fossa séu.

We’ll be stationed in the field along the West side of the park, with audience seated in the grass and along the hill. Come early to create your own sounds with Spectrum Soundbath at 7:30pm, with the film beginning at 8:30. PWYC via cash or card, no one turned away for lack of funds.

“”Otherwise” represents all the emergent possibilities that everywhere lie in wait. Documenting them over a year in Toronto’s free improvised music scene began a process which will culminate in a performative exhibition featuring insights from Colin Cudmore, Dee Dee Decay, Karen Ng and Marilyn Yogarajah and a ton of music speaking for itself. Like the music it represents, no exhibition of Otherwise will ever be the same.”

next soundbath is at dovercourt park on august 8th from 12-5pm! FREE as always, bring a blanket, instruments provided but you can definitely bring your own! i have a show later this night at 9pm so ill have to leave after 5 😭 by @spectrumsoundbath

Meet our incredible community members who will be activating the space with some exciting programming during the Barns Eco Market - bringing you a sound bath and a free clay workshop on the @doors_opento weekend

Spectrum Soundbath - Sonic Activation on May 24, 10AM - 4PM

@spectrumsoundbath is a collaborative soundbath practice facilitated by Marilyn Yogarajah that often takes place monthly at various spaces across the city. Various percussive instruments are available for community members to play and take part and play. Participants are encouraged to also rest on a bed of sound until they hear a sound and then look to an instrument to make that sound! They will be set up on the elevated stage in Christie Courtyard.

Clay Workshop - led by Francesca Conforti on May 24, 10AM - 2PM

@francescaconforticeramics is a Toronto-based ceramic artist creating intuitive, handbuilt pieces that explore form, texture, and the relationship between function and sculpture. Her practice is rooted in slow making, inviting both play and intention through clay. Alongside her studio work, she facilitates small-group workshops that encourage people to reconnect with their creativity in an approachable and tactile way. This free clay handbuilding workshop will be happening in the Christie Courtyard. Spots are limited, please register via the Eventbrite link in bio!
