Swipe to read about the project, and don’t wait to get your tickets! This is our last night of X Avant, and we are officially 75% SOLD OUT!!! 💥🔊✨❤️‍🔥

For our third and last night of X Avant, Mani Mazinani presents his Solar Organ with the Solar Organ Ensemble.

Mani Mazinani (b.1984, Tehran) is a Toronto-based artist making installation, video, film, sculpture, photographs, multiples, sound and music. His practice evolved from an early interest in sound recording, now working with the process of translating thoughts into recordings in various media. His visual work thinks about scale and perception, often combining subject matter and medium. Mazinani has been researching origins of ancient thought, perceptual limitations of humans, and improvisation.

He developed the Solar Organ in the Connected Minds artist residency at York University. Exhibition and performance history includes Evergreen Brick Works (2024), MOCA Toronto (2024), Tate Modern (2019), The Bentway, Toronto (2018), Tehran International Electronic Music Festival (2017), SIP Culture Centre, Suzhou (2016).

Solar Organ is a polyphonic sound generation machine, designed to produce tuned sound fields and playable as a pentatonic musical instrument by anyone regardless of training. Its inventor, Mani Mazinani is joined by Amahl Arulanandam (cello), Vic O (synth), Brandon Valdivia (percussion), Marilyn Yogarajah (trumpet), and Steve Kado (video synth projection) to form the Solar Organ Ensemble.

Solar Organ Ensemble performs music built on pentatonic music ideas, using traditional and invented scales, moving through composed and improvised forms. Pentatonic music practice is a universal phenomenon in human experience, globally ubiquitous geographically and historically. Solar Organ collects research that connects music to our biology, to engage in what is universal between us all.

ANCIENT CIRCUITRY | X AVANT XXI: Memory Mannnnn 🔊

For our third and last night of X Avant, gathering two artist’s projects in concert form, Ancient Circuitry combines Mani Mazinani’s Solar Organ and Alexis Nanibush-Pamajewong’s For The Youth: Reilluminated, connecting with ancestral knowledge today.

Solar Organ, an electronic pentatonic instrument created by Mani Mazinani, connects neurobiology with the geographic and historic ubiquity of pentatonic practice, a universal human phenomenon.

For The Youth: Reilluminated by Alexis Nanibush-Pamajewong, is a re-creation of a light and sound installation with local Indigenous youth performances — to honour the life, kinship, and the spirit of generations past, present, and future.

The performance will feature drumming from Liam Myran (Gull Bay First Nation) and Kaelen Pelletier (Serpent River First Nation), alongside Daniella Whitehead (Cree/Mi’kmaq), and champion hoop dancer Emilee Ann Pitawanakwat from Wiikwemikoong Unceded Territory.

INSTALLATION 🚲
Outside of performances, attendees can interact with sound sculptures from Night 2 artist Stephanie Orlando.

Inspired by everyday sounds from her time working as a bike mechanic, Stephanie Orlando’s Sonic Bikes installation invites attendees to interact with the spectrum of noises and musical textures of recycled bike parts.

Kicking off the final week of Back to School Field Trip, we’re honoured to present the debut of ‘Otherwise’, an experimental documentary film by Mike Filippov. Having carefully and diligently captured our local scene of experimental artists over the past few years, his improvised film on free improvisation comes to life on our DIY screen at Bickford Park, featuring live accompaniment from Heraclitus Akimbo and fossa séu.

We’ll be stationed in the field along the West side of the park, with audience seated in the grass and along the hill. Come early to create your own sounds with Spectrum Soundbath at 7:30pm, with the film beginning at 8:30. PWYC via cash or card, no one turned away for lack of funds.

Some words from director Mike Filippov…

“”Otherwise” represents all the emergent possibilities that everywhere lie in wait. Documenting them over a year in Toronto’s free improvised music scene began a process which will culminate in a performative exhibition featuring insights from Colin Cudmore, Dee Dee Decay, Karen Ng and Marilyn Yogarajah and a ton of music speaking for itself. Like the music it represents, no exhibition of Otherwise will ever be the same.”

Public Transit: Short walk from Christie station

Closest Address: 323 Harbord St

Accessibility: Along the West side grassy hill, paved and unpaved paths through the park

Washrooms: Bickford Park public washrooms until 8:30pm, various businesses along Bloor St

As our ode to the raw sonics of live processing, we’re excited to announce that X Avant XXI: Memory Mannnnn is coming Oct 14th to 16th!

For 3 nights at the First Unitarian Church, we’ll be deep diving into the world of pedal daisy chains and analogue instrument experiments. Memory Mannnnn is all about tactility and pedal play, bringing things back to the hands, body, and memory. In this rawness and adventure, delay, distortion, reverb, and filtering extend beyond effects and become tools that recreate and transform past, present, future, and memory.

X AVANT XXI: MEMORY MANNNNN is LIVE 💥

This is our ode to mechanical play and the raw sonics of live processing. Memory Mannnnn is about delay, filters, reverb, phase, distortion and how they can coalesce into a play of past, present, future where memory and sound recurs, degrades, and transforms.

I was invited to be the educator-in-residence at @dmg_utsc this fall to create programming that engages with @rajniperera's Futures.

For the first event, I collaborated with a dear friend, the legendary @yogayrajah from @spectrumsoundbath, to create a sound bath in the gallery. (October 2025)

The sounds reverberated through the paintings, and we had a soundtrack for the travellers in Rajni's paintings. It was such an enriching experience. I am so grateful to have been a small part of it. Thank you, Erin Peck, Marilyn, @enoki_heals, and several others who helped make this a core memory.

2025 gave us a lot to look back on! 👀

We presented work from more than 75 musicians and artists, collaborated with seven organizations, including outreach initiatives like our open decks and open HDMI activities copresented with @notabbq and @interaccessto, and welcomed more than a thousand guests. 🧮

Between holiday naps and seasonal socialising, we’re working hard behind the scenes and dreaming up plans for the rest of Year 14, resuming January 16 at It’s OK* Studios (@itsok.world). Details on that and more coming soon — stay tuned! 🪚

Until then, here’s a review of some of the moments that made Long Winter’s 2025 unforgettable. 👁

If you feel like giving something back, please consider making a donation to the Long Winter Sustainability Fund (link in bio). ♺

Thank you for helping us Do-It-Together. 🤝

Stay cozy. We’ll see you all in 2026! 🔭
