the dark goddess enters
through the lapping waters
like a sticky salve

like a pine forest

as black and bright as the moon

she slides through the birth canal

as if the front door is a side door,

as if the front door is not the gateway to god’s water cave.
She slips through like a shadow dressed in matted locks and red lace,

a white veil to conceal her face,

the dark goddess enters through the front door.
AS A FORCE
of life, as a force of death, as a form of grace. by @spellinthewoods

On this night there will be no meteor shower in my view, because oh sweet gurgling thunder, because oh sweet and gentle rain, because oh daring roll of cloud, rolling the cloud toward the sky-lightning-god who is showing off again. When I close my eyes maybe all that shooting star stuff will sizzle through the seams and burrow into dreams. This photo is from 17 years ago. I was staying in a very old log cabin with a leaky roof and an outhouse, on the top of a hill somewhere in Southern Vermont. The shower in the outhouse was full of spiders, there was a mountain cat that screamed at night, a pond full of dragonflies, faces in every tree, and real spring beds probably 100 years old. The sky crackled then too and I had an entirely true encounter with fairies, but mostly, I wrapped my leg around that trunk and gave it my love and it gave me its love and I managed to get a self-timed photo of it. Later I would review the photo and decide I looked kind of fat and crop out 3/4 of my body and become only a leg and some bark and that view. What to do — about how we see ourselves before we have gotten to know ourselves. But I do think it was the beginning of something…a kind of love affair with the question. Literally. Figuratively. Mysteriously. Essentially. Naturally. I shouldn’t be writing at 12:45 AM. Okay, goodnight. I hope eclipse season is opening you. And grandiose birthday salutations to all of the Leos! The ‘going in’ season has a lot going on. In other news, I think woodpeckers and beavers are related. #forestrules by @spellinthewoods

A fork in the road. A stone in a tree. And evidence of life continuing. Sound up! by @spellinthewoods

the forest knows me
the forest knows me

so what else matters?

when the stitches of time fray at both ends, I hear her singing

back to me
back to me

my song

(the song)

she hummed

when mother released my tiny body from her own into the world

of form
of form

my first breath
was her breath

(the breath)

she hummed

the forest knows me
the forest knows me

So what else matters?

the call was placed
to the inexplicable presence
vast and minuscule
everywhere and nowhere
unknown and bone-known
that force
wearing wings, solar rays, saffron robes
and absolutely nothing
I dialed up nothing
with my whole heart
in plain sight
of the wildness
within me
and
without me
and it answered
in the form of—

Ancient tribal communities that lived with the land, endured every possible extreme. They survived because their lives were interwoven with nature, their extra-sensory perceptions were not accessories but essential to the safety and health of the community. When you live as close to the spirit of the tree as you live to its branches, you form relationships of care, you look out for one another. Then, when the tree becomes fire, you speak with the fire, when the fire becomes ashes, you speak with the earth, and when the earth becomes a tree again, you recognize that tree as your relation.

The Great Mystery spits and swallows in equal measure.

It gives and takes with the same hand. We forget we are temporary and we forget we are eternal. So it does stuff to remind us. It drenches us in hurricane then gives a fuchsia sky. It lights wildfires and chases them with wildflowers. It gives us people who push us down and people who lift us up. The sun rises, the sun sets. The waves pull back, the waves push forward.

Exhale. Inhale. Exhale.
