Some folks influence their family and close friends.
Some folks influence their local community.
Some folks influence a geographic region.
Some folks influence an entire generation.
Then there are a precious few, whose contributions create a lasting influence. Who’s thoughts sweep from one generation to the next like fire, reshaping the landscape & transcending time. A right of passage. A code of honor. A society of passionate, proud, like minded “purist”.
In an age where being a “purist” is an insult, and obsession with the “way” is widely criticized- thank you Colonel for setting the standard, and holding the line.
Rest assured, sir, we will pass it on.

Twenty one years ago this morning, the Good Lord sent us a ShEO. She came in to this world as a teeny tiny 4lb 7oz, 8 week early, giant hearted little thing…. But even in the NICU she wanted it more than all the other little babies. Watching her blossom in to the exceptionally talented, wicked smart, incredibly efficient, never forgetful, coffee addicted ShEO grown up versions of herself has been one of the highest privileges of my whole life. Let me tell you, Shes’s one amazing kid.
She’s been blessed with her Momma’s heart and cursed with her Daddy’s temper. If she’s your friend- you’re a better person because she’s texting you, fighting for you, praying for you, and probably FaceTiming you!

As the calendar rolls over to June tomorrow morning, it’s only fitting to pause and reflect on the glory of spring’s bounty. I especially enjoyed staying close to home this spring, and the chance to share “home” with a lot of great folks. It was good to see my kids grow in their knowledge and skill as they both branched out on their own. It was an honor to take my hero’s west and show them Merriam’s.
Of all the moments I’ll take away from this spring, though, I think it’s the moments that didn’t include a dead turkey that I’ll savor the most - learning how to burn at the farm, sitting on the porch and listening to the story of a successful hunt, and the “can you see him” from a couple of the finest humans I’ve ever known.

The finality of the kill surely is sweet, but it’s all the moments in between it and all around it that give us the context to appreciate its sweetness.
Here’s hoping we live to see it one more time…. God bless the wild turkey. by @spence_halford

Twenty two years passes in the blink of an eye.
Half of the years I’ve been alive, I’ve spent married to Lindy. There is no doubt those years have made me a better person.
I’m so glad that 22 year old Spence had no idea how difficult some parts of life’s journey would be. I surely would have avoided those parts, and hidden from the pain.
On the other hand, 44 year old Spence can look back at those difficult times and appreciate the depth and beauty and fortitude that those difficulties have woven in to our life’s journey.
Lindy brings peace and calm and balance to life’s storms. She’s shown up every day and loved me like Jesus.

Happy Anniversary Lindy! I love you.

We had ourselves a day in the River bottoms!
Tripp and I roosted 3 gobblers yesterday evening and made a game plan for getting in between them at day light. At fly down, a textbook roost hunt unfolded to perfection and at 6:40am my nephew Hal Peters was about to join the Tenth Legion!
We came back to the house to celebrate, eat some breakfast, and dodge the rain. Tripp asked if we could make a loop through the bottoms and hunt a little more.
We left the truck at 9:15 and eased in to one of our favorite spots.
About 10 minutes later, I went to call and on my 3rd or 4th yelp, 3 longbeards blew the top off.
They had snuck in silent from our right and were at to 20/25 yards when they gobbled…. Knocked our hats off.

Tripp let them separate, made a great shot and we were back at the house by 10am.
What a special Easter weekend- Thank you Jesus for conquering death!

As this duck season comes to a close, we can’t help but take a moment to pause and reflect on how blessed we truly are. The mallard duck has brought us so many rich memories afield, treasured times with friends and family, and some of the most beautiful moments nature has to offer.
Our friend Keith Allen always reminds us “We get to duck hunt”.
Here’s hoping your final hours of duck season are filled with gratitude 🍻

The final release is the Grey Levey Short, a more simple design than the rest, but a promised Levey Short to finish a year built on creativity, craft, and consistency.

Days in Duck Camp
•
Days in duck camp remind you the hunt is only part of it. Coffee on the table, a fire going in the background, and conversation that starts early and carries through the day. Breakfast turns into a place for stories, laughs, and catching up. Around the holidays especially, it all comes together. Good people, shared time, and moments you don’t rush through.
