I’m really excited to share that my short story, This Ocean Was a City Once, has been shortlisted for the Aurealis Awards 2026.

I’m so grateful to everyone who’s supported my writing along the way, and to the judges who read an enormous number of entries this year, as well as the GenreCon team for hosting the awards.

I’m genuinely looking forward to reading the work of the other finalists, and feel very lucky to be in such strong company. by @spencerrosewrites

Hello to all my new followers! 👋

My name is Spencer Rose, and I am a writer of cosy, sapphic sci-fi adventures (with a hint of magic and a dusting of romance!).

The first book in my series, The Biokin Chronicles, is Sapling's Orbit. It's a planet-hopping page-turner that is rated ⋆⋆⋆⋆ on Goodreads.

When I'm not writing, I love playing video games, crafts, woodworking and learning new vegetarian recipes.

My favourite authors are Margaret Atwood, Martha Wells, Dervla McTiernan, Micaiah Johnson and Virginia Black. Let me know yours in the comments!

You can check out my books for free by signing up for my newsletter. See link the in my bio for my books, newsletter signup and loads of other goodies.

Sian has spent her whole life being the princess who doesn't inherit the throne. Diplomatic. Dutiful. Secretly in a relationship with her best friend. Then her girlfriend steals her face and leaves her stranded on a foreign planet with nothing: no money, no identity, no one who believes her.

To survive, Sian takes the only job available: palace goose keeper. To reclaim her life, she'll need to expose a political conspiracy she never saw coming, and learn to trust the charismatic knight investigating the very same plot.

A sapphic sci-fi retelling of The Goose Girl, out 4 November. Preorder the ebook now and it'll be on your Kindle on launch day.

I am back writing! I'm working on short stories at the moment, with a weekly writing challenge (that I'm a little behind on, but I am a believer in progress, not perfection!).

I'm here with my writers group, @sydneyspeculativescribes. Everyone is deep in the zone! There's nothing like a bit of social pressure of everyone around you working away to get you putting those words on the page!

I spent years watching princesses end up with princes and wondering why none of the stories felt like mine.

Turns out the fairy tale I wanted didn't exist yet. So I wrote it.

The Princess Thief is a sapphic sci-fi retelling of The Goose Girl, out 4 November.

Preorder the ebook on Amazon, or join my mailing list to get notified when paperbacks hit my site.

Growing up, I loved sci-fi. Otherworldly adventures. Cool powers. Found families. But I never saw myself in these stories. So when I came back to writing after two decades away, I wrote the stories I wished I'd been able to read growing up. Ones where the heroes were women, and they might just fall in love with other women.

The Princess Thief is my newest story. It's got a princess, a knight, a stolen identity and far too many geese.

It's out 4 November. Preorder the ebook now, or sign up for my newsletter to get notified when the paperback lands.
