“Sister”

my horse has come for me
the arc of jasmine
fell across our necks
and I
wandered across the hills
on his back,
carried,
at last, at last.

sunlight against a wall
in her hair
moonlight on
the robots dammed
the place
the riven sky.

we will ride
across dark sky
those rippled moonlit waves

the kitten
sleeps under my chin,
always
my
kitten,
tucked safely
between
my chest and
and
my sad, trembling jaw
tremble into her fur

come with me now.
now, sister, hold my back, hold on tight,
we will ride wide and long across the wet sand,
for a thousand miles, gallop,
free

and exhausted

into the bright
unencumbered

empty dawn

…

Thanks to Allah, I was given the chance to leave Gaza safely a place that continues to write painful and unexpected chapters of life.

During the war, I was working as an engineer at the Gaza Electricity Distribution Company (GEDCO), which was heavily damaged, and I also volunteered at the European Gaza Hospital in Khan Younis in the electromechanical department, doing my best to help people during those difficult times.
Leaving Gaza was one of the hardest experiences of my life. My heart was filled with pain as I said goodbye to my family and my people, but I carry them with me wherever I go.
Today, I’m starting a new chapter in Italy, continuing my journey by studying for a Master’s Degree in Management Engineering at Parthenope University. I believe that knowledge and hard work are the true paths to rebuilding and creating a better future.
This journey is not a separation from my roots, it is a continuation of my mission to serve people wherever I am.
Even though leaving was difficult, my heart remains with my loved ones and all the people of Gaza.
I pray that Allah keeps them safe and brings peace and hope to our land once again.

...

as papers fall
on the city

if you don’t leave,
we will kill you
in your home
or on the street
or in your school
or even
as you flee,
if we want to do that
we will

and no one will stop us
we will
do it nightly
surprise you

we’re increasing our operation
so do what we say, run away
run
run
run

...
last week another soldier shot himself in the forest.
...
and the newspaper writers
if they even glance over
at the barbed wire

bleach out
the aching footsteps
the terrified toddler

the father at the door of the morgue
looking for his sons.

...

the soldier’s nightmares

the drugs wearing off
...

the little girl’s smile
because the flash of light was beautiful

her sister lies
with one arm broken

the deepest dark
enfolds her

a blanket of terror
the stars fade
the sky is pale

the robots
march forward

through the salt air
the waves call softly to her by @spintolini
