Charles Spitzack is a Pacific Northwest based artist specializing in traditional woodcut printmaking. He maintains a dedicated studio practice, teaches printmaking classes, works as a carpenter, and serves as Board President of Seattle Print Arts, where he supports and advocates for regional printmakers. His hand-printing process builds on traditional techniques through ongoing personal exploration, offering a deliberate, tactile counterpoint to today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.

ONLINE: Mokuhanga and Washi — A Working Relationship

Join Charles Spitzack @spitzattack for a three-part online class through @winslowartcenter exploring mokuhanga, water-based Japanese woodblock printing, and the relationship between print and washi.

Students will experiment with different printing methods on a sample pack of papers to create a range of effects. Students will also have the option to bind their printed samples into a simple reference book.

October 6, 13 & 20

🌊 Mokuhanga and Washi: A Working Relationship

Join the ever-inspiring Charles Spitzack for an engaging online exploration of mokuhanga, water-based Japanese woodblock printing and the fascinating ways different washi papers influence the final print.

Over three sessions, you’ll carve simple shapes, experiment with watercolor and gouache, and explore flat color, gradients, and texture. You’ll also print on a variety of washi to discover how each paper responds to pigment, moisture, and pressure. For an extra creative project, students can bind their prints into a simple book to create a personal washi reference guide.

Join me October 22–23 for two days of hands-on woodblock printmaking with Seattle Co-Arts in Shoreline, WA!

We’ll focus on mokuhanga, Japanese woodblock printmaking using watercolor and washi paper, and touch on white-line woodcut and multi-block woodcut with oil-based inks. We’ll explore how to make prints by hand, without a press.
