POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We’ve loved hosting amazing work by @prattfinearts artists on our shelves this summer, bringing one-of-a-kind glass, wood, broomcraft and more to the Store for the very first time. Pratt is such a special place, and the artists who teach and create there definitely help make it so.

With a new exhibition season right around the corner, big changes are coming to the Store, and this is the last chance you’ll have to see these incredible pieces together in one place. Come celebrate Seattle’s talented maker community one last time as “In Community: Pratt Fine Arts Center” comes to a close this weekend. 🎉

🌊 Mokuhanga and Washi: A Working Relationship

@spitzattack

Join the ever-inspiring Charles Spitzack for an engaging online exploration of mokuhanga, water-based Japanese woodblock printing and the fascinating ways different washi papers influence the final print.

Over three sessions, you’ll carve simple shapes, experiment with watercolor and gouache, and explore flat color, gradients, and texture. You’ll also print on a variety of washi to discover how each paper responds to pigment, moisture, and pressure. For an extra creative project, students can bind their prints into a simple book to create a personal washi reference guide.

Tuesdays, October 6–20
Online ~ All levels welcome

Commonweal staff are known to bring "head, heart, and hands" to the work we do in the world. You can see this spirit at play during a field trip to the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle (@prattfinearts), where Common Knowledge Press team members learned from Charles Spitzack (@spitzattack) how to make woodblock prints for future press publications. They said the experience was "a really rich day immersed in a workshop. A very active meditation and respite from everyday life." We hope the beauty and creative energy will carry over into future publications from the press.

Common Knowledge Press is Commonweal's publication project, originally founded in our early years and relaunched for our 50th anniversary. New installments in our Founders Series are coming soon.

Charles Spitzack is a Pacific Northwest based artist specializing in traditional woodcut printmaking. He maintains a dedicated studio practice, teaches printmaking classes, works as a carpenter, and serves as Board President of Seattle Print Arts, where he supports and advocates for regional printmakers. His hand-printing process builds on traditional techniques through ongoing personal exploration, offering a deliberate, tactile counterpoint to today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.

Charles has long been a staple at @prattfinearts, heavily involved in the Pratt community as a teacher and working artist. We’re thrilled to bring his incredible work into the Store as part of our special collaboration with Pratt. Come check it out!

The review session and the open studio of the Advanced Program D 2026 was held on Wednesday, July 15. The participating artists shared the result and exploration in Mokuhanga techniques and Echizen washi with instructors and visitors.

At the round discussion after the opening ceremony of the exhibition “Echizen Washi and Contemporary Mokuhanga”, the artists shared their impressions of working with Echizen Washi. First, they noted that having the opportunity to experiment with such a wide variety of washi was a privilege. They also mentioned that witnessing the papermaking process firsthand revealed to them that washi, much like printmaking, reflects the unique personality of its creator. Overall, they expressed deep respect for the art of papermaking.

We hope they will continue to explore the possibilities of washi in their printmaking practice at home.
