Today, we’re kicking up some dust — sawdust.

Our frame shop is where hardwood, human hands and a few very useful power tools come together to get the job done. Our talented craftspeople know a thing or fifty about bandsaws, miters, joinery and corner blocks — the precision work behind a beautifully finished frame.

Meet E.C.

Greensboro native Emma Claire Johnson came to Splashworks this summer as an intern with a seemingly simple assignment: take a look at our decorative pillow lineup and see what might be missing.

That escalated nicely.

A textile and fibers student at SCAD, E.C. brought a fresh eye, a love of print and pattern, and plenty of ideas to the assignment. With a little creative freedom — okay, a lot — one pillow led to another and suddenly we had a collection.

Introducing E.C. Johnson x Splashworks at #HPMKT.

For E.C., the Splashworks experience offered a different kind of classroom: less regimented, more room to play, experiment and follow an idea wherever it wanted to go. Exactly the kind of creative energy we like around here.

Organic growth is the best kind.

Our current Splashworks workroom has served us well, but lately it’s been feeling a little tight at the seams. So this November, we’re moving into a larger space in High Point’s emerging West End Arts District, just across from Cohab Space.

There’s room to spread out, make more art and keep growing creative ideas along with the footprint.

Join Splashworks leader — and visionary — Tom Van Dessel for a walkabout and a first look at what’s ahead. The future-state rendering at the end? That’s the longer view — not November’s reveal, but a glimpse of how we might evolve.

For now, cue the moving trucks.

It’s a mood. It’s a moment. It’s a palette.

We’re crushing on what we call “bruised hues,” an emerging color palette with edge. Think muddied and moody blues, grays that flirt with black, smoky ochres and tarnished golds. Mixed and marbleized. More interesting than anything straight from the tube.

Yes, there’s science behind the seduction. Neuroaesthetics tells us our brains respond to the complexity, variation and organic patterns we find in nature. Bruised hues have that same irregularity – colors shift, mingle and refuse to stay neatly in their lanes.
