I made this with my hands and heart and blood, black bile, all of it. There’s gratitude to be had, too. Deep thanks @toastator for opening up @thesoundoven and his big booty brain to me. Number one fan of what he does. He played upright bass, bass guitar, and drums on Track 5 and recorded, mixed, and produced most of it, with additional production from @mikecote_muaythai. The venerable @thegbelluscio played tenor sax and sang on the single version of Track 14, with additional engineering, production, and mixing input. Track 12 spawned from a very important poem by an important friend, Chris B. This album also wouldn’t have looked the same without the song circle @couvomusic organized around Daniel, Daniel, Mike, Jack, Henry, Kevin, Allison, and their projects @heyagaintheband @moonsandland @that.spicymike @rossorossomusic @finaband @itspictureshow @plebsthe @endearmnts and @wetsuitnyc. You guys teach me over and over again, and it’s fun as hell. Thanks also to @sn0ozeville @imbrogli.o and @gabviously for art input, support, and better ideas than mine 🤘🤟 by @spoffordhall

A summer of other people’s music and then some. Led me back to my own and the fact that I’ve still been connected even when I felt like I was disconnected.

1. “Jubilee” by John Joyce. Still working at it after almost two decades. It’ll get its own post.

2. “Home” from Rocky Horror Picture Show on maybe two hours of sleep

3. The set for Annie. I couldn’t find my good picture of the pit band for Hello Dolly. @toastator hooked me up with these musicals and they kicked my ass and made me new.

4. The GOAT. Peter Heimlich. There are no words. He’s filled with heart and wit and songs. Played with him in Brian Hastings’ Sky Road for a night on bass and mandolin also pretending I was @toastator

@jxfussell songs and adaptations of them as ballads, hoots, hollers, tone poems, shuffles, dances, dirges, earth, people, stories of people, men who marry the wrong woman, ocean, dinner, weddings that happen like Faulkner before Faulkner, labyrinthine parties, Platonic forms, and the blues… well, they just feel like vitamins lately.

And, yes, this is the second installment in my so far, um, two part series of things Jake Xerxes Fussell does with the same name as things I’m doing.

If you think about it, Greg Mendez is kind of Iike Weezer if Weezer were, you know… Greg Mendez.

The chunky second inversion chords and kickass low end are actual common things. But like, yeah, @xgregmendezx sounds like a Weezer split b/w Elliott Smith’s “Waltz #2”, which is about the sickest thing I can think of.

What other non-Weezer songs should I learn?

So. I made this fascist Kate Bush death march six years ago for obvious reasons. I figured since we’ve already lived through the death of irony, incarnating evil right back to its own face might be one of the bigger weapons of the moment. An authenticity. An admission that the ground beneath our feet is poison, and we’re paying for it, and we’re restless. Saying we’re part of this, saying to this whole class of boy kings that they made us and we made them, and we’re capable of everything they’re capable of, that we’ll use the master’s tools if pushed… but we choose not to in our everyday care for each other. This is for my human siblings in spirit who are displaced in California, North Carolina and the wake of Helene, in Gaza. This is for my human siblings bulldozed in Sweet Home, in Rafah. For my human siblings in spirit who fear deportation and separation from their families. This is for my human siblings in spirit fretting over top surgeries, feeling the charge of de facto casual violence dog-whistled and spoken into the air. Like a lot of you, I’ve been thinking about David Lynch, what he had to say about the constants of the universe making up a unified field that we vibrate through. Sing through. We’re part of this. And I gain energy from that truth, even if we’re mourning, even if we’re part of something that seems almost uniformly ugly. There are more of us than there are of those who make it most so.
