In 2022, Tom Spearitt led SPR to our first bit of silverware. The Bill Hughes Shield. A proper moment for a club still finding its feet.

Today, he leads us out in the DBD Memorial Cup against the highest-level opposition we’ve faced in a competitive game.

Bigger test. Same Tom. Same belief that a gang of mates from South Liverpool that stick together can beat anyone in front of them.

SPR left it late for the winner against Litherland REMYCA coming out 4-3 to the Oranjeses, the 4th coming with 10 seconds to spare.

A big win at home with Soph Porter bagging a screamer, Danni getting a brace and Ruby not taking no for an answer winning it late on.

7.5 years ago, SPR was formed as a football club in the image of its place.

Working class. Good. Together. A modern-day reflection of Liverpool.

Founded by @jakegerardnolan and Alex Lagoyiannis, who thought footy could be a force for good. Get people together. Get them out of their own heads. Give them somewhere to belong. A football club to belong to.

Since then, we’ve won a good few games, lost a few, started more teams and brought home a few trophies. Had some very good away days, too, lost players, got them back and had a many laughs.

But the best thing about this club is its people. Someone to have a gab with. Someone who notices when you’ve not turned up. Someone in your corner when life’s giving you a bit.

A proper community, built by everyone who’s been part of it. And it’s only getting stronger.

On this #WorldMentalHealthDay, and every other day, look after yourself and each other.

Check on your mates. Mean it when you ask.

I’ve been going to watch these lads on and off for past couple of years, a local club playing just off lodge lane. Sefton Park Rangers are not just a club they are a full wrap around community with a first and second team, women’s team and a Friday night kick about.

Watching them play is one thing but what happens off the pitch is another. They help in the community distribute balls and bring connection n belonging to those who watch and play.

Before I come to Liverpool I’d fallen out with football pretty much completely, I’d not kicked a ball for years. While been here I’ve rediscovered me love for it. It’s called the beautiful game for a reason. And at this grass roots level you see football in all its glory. Not only have I fallen back in love with playing football due to playing with @damienjohnkellyhouse every Thursday and the odd Friday kick about with SPR. Started going to games more up n down the football league from Scunthorpe to Liverpool FC. Along the way I became drawn to photographing football too, theres a variety of emotions conveyed on 90 minutes that can’t really be replicated. I love the commitment, the passion and the upset.

Another thing I found out when I came here was the notion of being a wool. And that folk like myself from gods county are in-fact wools of a sorts. I also found out that you can be dyed in the wool. Which means the scousers adopt you as one of their own. Folk keep telling me am an adopted scouser, so the wool must finally have been dyed. I suppose we’re all wools to somebody.
