Hi! 👋🏻 we finally decided to go for it here on the gram! We’re Abbey, Kevin, Juniper the dog, and Josephine the van! We live in the Mile High City of Denver but both grew up on the east coast. In our day-to-day lives, Abbey is a flight attendant and digital marketer and Kevin is a video producer. Meanwhile, Juniper has the VERY important job of guarding both our house and van from squirrels and delivery trucks.

And while we’re not full-time van lifers, we travel and camp as often as we can. Our goal is to share our outdoor travels and adventures and to meet some other people in the van life and overlanding communities!

Thanks for being here and maybe we’ll see you on the road! 🚐

Happy National Black Dog Day from our favorite co-pilot, Juniper! 🖤🐾

Did you know that black dogs are statistically the least likely to be adopted from shelters? Known as “Black Dog Syndrome,” dark-coated dogs are often overlooked in rescue centers purely due to photography lighting or unfounded superstitions.

We experienced this firsthand with June. We adopted her when she was 8 months old, after she spent 6 whole months with ZERO interest from potential adopters starting at just 8 weeks old.

Fast forward to today: she has traveled thousands of miles with us across the US in our sprinter van, from the Florida Keys to the Arctic Ocean. She’s the best trail partner and bed-hogger we could ever ask for! 🥹🚐

If you’re ever thinking about adopting a pet, don’t overlook the black dogs in the shelter - they truly make the most loyal, majestic best friends! 🐕‍🦺

No boat ramp? No problem. 🚜🌊⚓️

The beaches along Ninilchik and Deep Creek on the Kenai Peninsula have massive 20+ foot tides and zero protected harbors. To solve the problem, modified farm tractors are used to launch and retrieve heavy ocean fishing boats right out of the crashing surf!

Watching these boats gun it full-throttle straight toward the shore and then get hauled right up onto dry land was one of the coolest local traditions we saw all summer.

The secret to seeing 1,000lb brown bears up close… 🐻🚤✨

While exploring the Kenai Peninsula, Kevin took a bucket-list guided bear photography tour with River Rock Outdoors out of Soldotna to Big River Lakes - located in the Redoubt Bay State Critical Habitat Area, home to one of the densest coastal brown bear populations in Alaska!

🐟 Coastal Brown Bears vs. Grizzlies: They’re actually the exact same species (Ursus arctos), but separated by geography and diet! Coastal brown bears feast on rich, abundant salmon runs, allowing them to grow up to twice the size of inland grizzlies.

😴 Salmon Food Comas: Because food is so plentiful along the coast, these bears are far more relaxed and tolerant. In fact, the mama bears were in such intense salmon food comas they barely bothered to move - even when their playful cubs were jumping all over them!

🚤 Boat Access: Being on the water allowed the guide to maneuver right up near the shoreline without disturbing the sows or their cubs.

Watching these majestic bears in their natural habitat was an experience Kevin will never forget. 🥹🌲

Kevin flew into the wild for the ultimate Alaska bucket list moment! 🛩️🐻

While we explored the Kenai Peninsula, Kevin took off on a dream bear photography tour with River Rock Outdoors out of Soldotna.

Flying out in a classic 1959 de Havilland Beaver floatplane toward Big River Lakes (right on the edge of Lake Clark National Park!), the views from the window were insane and it didn’t take long before they started spotting coastal brown bears right from the air!

A quirky stop in Alaska! 🐱☕️🌲

Even if you only have a couple of hours, the historic town of Talkeetna is an absolute must-visit on your Alaska road trip!

Known for its colorful Main Street, incredible views of the Alaska Range, and bush pilot history, it’s also famous for its feline leadership. The town appointed its first cat mayor, Stubbs, back in 1997, and today Mayor Aurora carries on the tradition from her residence at Nagley’s Store! (She was out on official mayoral business during our visit, but we’re holding out hope for next time 🐾).

📍 Talkeetna Quick-Stop Checklist:

☕️ Coffee: Conscious Coffee (watch out for local pups looking for a game of fetch!)
🐟 Lunch: The Salmon Spot (seriously delicious wild Alaska salmon)
🐱 Nagley’s Store: Stop by to look for Mayor Denali!
🍞 Bonus - Talkeetna Spinach Bread: snag some cheesy spinach bread and other tasty treats (they were unfortunately closed the day we passed through so we’ll just have to go back!)
