PHOS HILARON (O Gladsome Light)
an immersive art installation
________________________
This Saturday, Sept 26th, Belmont University’s @creativeartscollective is hosting their inaugural festival “Art and Wonder” in Nashville, and I’ve created a new original experience for this multi-layered event! @artandwonderfest

Phos Hilaron (“foss hill-uh-ron”) means “gladsome light.” It’s one of the oldest hymns in existence, an evening prayer sung with the lighting of lamps in the coming dark. There’s something fitting about that for an installation built entirely out of light, projected in a dark room in the same spirit those ancient lamps were once lit by hand.

Phos Hilaron is a song of light. The 45-minute experience is part film/part meditation, a visual liturgy tracing the arc of Creation itself, light forming the cosmos, forests as the original cathedrals, storm giving way to stillness, winter giving way to spring. With New Creation breaking forth throughout it all.

Phos Hilaron features an original score by my dear friend & fellow collaborator @hanan.townshend, the composer behind Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” & “To the Wonder”. His piano & strings carry the whole piece through images of burning sun, braided rivers, gathering storms, falling snow, & fields bursting back into bloom. And stunning calligraphy by @davidchangstudio bookends the experience as a Prelude & Postlude, with the ancient hymn written out by hand in illuminated ink.

We debuted the live version of this piece just months ago at Washington National Cathedral for @commentmagazine’s UNDERSTORY festival. This weekend it becomes a looping immersive installation, adapted for the Art & Wonder festival, so anyone can walk in, sit down, & stay as long as they want. It will play on a loop all day long. And it’s FREE & open to the public!

Swipe to the last few slides for more info + check out artwonderfest.com for schedule & deets.

If you’re in Nashville, come sit in the dark with us & let your eyes be filled with luminous wonder!

Peace be with you. 🙏🏼

P.S. Massive thanks to my friends @orangethread & @lukemcelroy for setting up the projection for me since I’ll be at another event! taken in Belmont University by @sproctor

Oregon From Above: A Year of Wild Wonder
My First-Ever Calendar!!! 📆
______________________
Hey everyone! I’ve got some fun news to share today. I just released my first-ever calendar, and it’s on sale now!

This 2027 Calendar features the beauty of “Oregon From Above”, including a few landscapes that might make you think, “That’s in Oregon?!” Oregon isn’t just full of lush evergreen forests, waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines. In fact, most of Oregon is high desert, grasslands, and wild “outback”. I loved getting to use this project as an excuse to explore some of these unexpected scenes with my drone and camera. It’s such a stunning state!

(Link to order in bio!)

This calendar project was created in partnership with Oregon Parks Forever. @oregonparksforever (OPF) is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to protecting and enhancing Oregon’s state parks & public lands, stepping in to help fund the work that keeps these places wild, welcoming, and well cared for. Since Oregon’s parks receive no state tax funding, the organization relies on donors and partners to preserve historic sites, maintain trails, and support education programs that connect people — especially the next generation — with the outdoors. It’s work rooted in the belief that Oregon’s parks are a shared inheritance worth protecting.

This work feels more urgent than ever. National parks and public lands nationwide have faced significant proposed federal funding cuts and staffing reductions over the past year — and while some of the deepest cuts have been pushed back on, the pressure hasn’t let up. Nonprofits like OPF exist precisely for moments like this: to help fill funding gaps and make sure Oregon’s parks stay protected regardless of what happens at the federal level. (How strange and sad it is that “conservation” actually needs defending these days.)

 (Link to order in bio)

The calendar is $25, & you can order it HERE. There’s a limited supply, so if you’re interested in getting your hands on one, I would go ahead & pull the trigger sooner than later.

And like my book, this would make a great gift for the nature-lover in your life — so here’s a chance to get your Christmas/Birthday shoppi taken in Oregon by @sproctor

Rivendell isn't just a location in Middle-earth. It's a way of being.

Hospitality. Creativity. Peace. A place where the weary find rest and the curious find wisdom. This conversation went somewhere I didn't expect. What would it look like to actually build that kind of environment around you? Not a fantasy. A daily practice.

The people who lead well, create well, and live well tend to have one thing in common: they're intentional about the atmosphere they create. For others and for themselves.

What kind of space are you building around your life?

This past May, I had the incredibly rare privilege of creating immersive projections inside the Washington Nat’l Cathedral in DC (@wncathedral). This was done for @commentmagazine’s inaugural festival called “The Understory.” (Thank you @annesnyder10 & @tiffanythompsonmusic for your incredibly generous invitation & trust!)

For the first evening of the event, Comment commissioned me to curate a unique moment in time & space — an hour for people to slow down, reflect, & meditate on the wonder of Creation, allowing light & music to tell the story. As this experience took shape, I invited my friend, composer @hanan.townshend, to collaborate with me — co-creating an original visual and musical world together, with Hanan composing and performing live music woven directly into the visuals as one unified piece. (You may recognize some of Hanan’s work in a few Terrence Malick films, among many other beautiful movies.) Together we named the experience after the first hymn of the Early Church: PHOS HILARON (O Gladsome Light).

I also invited my friend @jeremystanley to capture the experience. And I’m so glad I did! No surprise that he knocked it out of the park & worked some beautiful magic with his camera. 🙏🏼 Here are just a few clips that Jeremy filmed that night — a few precious glimpses from an unforgettable event that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Massive thanks to everyone involved, especially the insanely talented production team that came together & followed my lead on this unique concert experience. It took a village of wizards to pull this one off... and I am so grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing this vision to life & in one of the most beautiful sacred spaces in America!

My heart is fuller.
My eyes are opened wider.
My dreams are growing bigger.

PHOS HILARON { a song of light }
______________

For the past several months, @hanan.townshend & I have been working on an immersive experience that brings orchestral music, film, meditation, spiritual longing, & the beauty of Creation together.

A few weeks ago, we had the unbelievable privilege of sharing this dream at the Washington National Cathedral for @commentmagazine’s inaugural festival “The Understory”. We named this experience after the first hymn of the Church: “Phos Hilaron (O Gladsome Light)”

Like the original Phos Hilaron, this was an offering of light in the evening hours. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for this first expression of the experience, and we hope there may be opportunities to gather again in the future.

Getting to curate visuals & immersive projection in the Cathedral was amazing enough, but I wanted to bring something unique & extra special to the occasion—a meditation on “light & high beauty” that awakened people’s imagination towards the wonder of our Creator, and as @nytdavidbrooks so graciously described afterward, “tossed (us) back over to the land of enchantment.”

Here are a few glimpses from that evening, along with some behind-the-scenes moments during pre-production & soundcheck.

Many thanks to those involved both on & offstage, especially @audreyassad, @iamjonguerra, @davidchangstudio, @jbwooddesign, @jeremystanley, @tiffanythompsonmusic, @annesnyder10, & @commentmagazine. I will never forget this evening for as long as I live. 🙏🏼 taken in Washington National Cathedral by @sproctor

KINTSUGI CATHEDRAL
____________________
When my friend @tiffanythompsonmusic (exec editor for @commentmagazine) reached out with the idea of immersive projection for The Understory, my mind started spinning with ideas of what visuals might look good on a cathedral’s columns & arches. And the first image that came to mind was kintsugi.

Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of mending broken vessels with gold-infused lacquer. Instead of hiding the cracks, Kintsugi brings attention to them, redeeming the brokenness & elevating the entire vessel to even higher beauty & value. It’s a profound art-form freighted with meaning & metaphor.

What might it look like to apply this metaphor to the Church? What if we didn’t cover up her brokenness but rather drew attention to it? What could it mean to mend the splits with “gold”?

The main question @commentmagazine posed to us @ The Understory was this: “What is struggling to be born?” Perhaps the image of our National Cathedral in DC being wrapped in kintsugi gold is my unspoken answer to this question.

To achieve this, I asked friend & fellow visual artist @davidchangstudio for help. Projecting photos of kintsugi bowls wouldn’t work—I needed just the gold-filled cracks. David is also kintsugi facilitator (with @calltogather), so if anyone could pull this off while feeling the appropriate weight of the moment, he could. So he experimented with painting gold kintsugi “abstractions” on black paper. And the result was exactly what it was looking for! (See the 2nd photo for one of the pieces he submitted.)

@iamfujimura, who gave an incredible presentation during our “Kintsugi” moment, has often called us to be a “Kintsugi Generation”. This often reminds me of the vision Saint Francis of Assisi had when he saw the ruins of a church and then heard a Voice say, “Repair My Church!” May it be an invitation we accept with humility & curiosity. Because there’s a lot of brokenness both out there & inside ourselves. Let us fill the cracks with light & high beauty!

Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in”

This one’s gonna take a minute for me to process. It still feels like it was all a dream. Probably because it was a dream gig! Immersive projection & visual curation in the Washington National Cathedral for @commentmagazine’s inaugural festival “The Understory”!!!

I’ll be sharing much more in the days & months ahead. For now, here are a few moments from this wild & luminous experience.

Massive thanks to @annesnyder10 & @tiffanythompsonmusic, the entire team at COMMENT, and especially the insanely talented production team for the opportunity & support to pull this one off. It took a village! (And we’re just getting started! 😏) taken in Washington National Cathedral by @sproctor
