Our cities are getting hotter, more congested, and less connected to the natural systems that sustain us. Mother Earth knows best, and it’s wise for us to work with and not against her! 🌎

With less than a week left until release, that’s the underlying message Sheila Boudreau set out to share in her new book, Green Cities: How Green Infrastructure Helps Urban Centers Thrive. 🌱🏙️

Written for children ages 10–14, this book starts the conversation earlier so young people can grow up with the knowledge to observe the world around them, ask good questions about what they see, and learn to care for our urban environments with inspirational examples, expert quotes, and engaging illustrations by Katy Dockrill. 🌿 @katy.dockrill @owlkidspublishing

Available for pre-order now, and in stores as of April 7th, 2026.

Check out our Kirkus review in the link in bio! 🔗 The book is also being released by other publishers in Australia 🇦🇺 , New Zealand 🇳🇿, and South Korea 🇰🇷

The Canadian Urban Forest Conference 2026 is October 13th to 16th, bringing together industry leaders and voices from across Canada to share, connect, and innovate.

It will addresses a critical challenge for our changing landscapes: “Growing Cities While Growing Urban Forests.” As urban centers expand, collaborating on sustainable, climate-resilient growth has never been more vital.

SpruceLab’s @sheilaboudreau will be joining the conversation on a featured keynote panel, sharing her industry insights on innovative urban forestry and resilient planning. Her children’s book Green Cities : How Green Infrastructure Helps Urban Centers Thrive supports the next generation learning about the vital role that plays in designing and building sustainable communities.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day of recognition and honour for every child who never made it home, the survivors and their families, and the individuals and communities affected.

For generations to come, we will amplify and honour Indigenous voices making sure that we do our part in listening, truth and repair.

We use this day to reflect on our past and commit to meaningful change.

Happy International #Indigenous Peoples Day to everyone on #MotherEarth - We at SpruceLab are thankful and blessed to be supporting #FirstNations #Metis (& hopefully #Inuit in the future) through our planning & landscape architecture work. As a social enterprise, we seek ways to uplift Indigenous voices through land-based work, placekeeping, education (Earth Tending program) and collaboration with artists and designers (Dbaajmowin program). Canada has a LONG way to go towards reconciliation, but today is a day of celebration ❤️ for all Indigenous Peoples. Pics from @native_womens_resource_centre event June 20, 2026 by @sprucelabinc

We’re 5 days away from opening so let’s hear it from Amber and Gwen!
Earth tending is a six week program that @sheilaboudreau started through SpruceLab. The goal is not only to get Indigenous individuals reconnected with the land— it’s also a space where people can connect to each other and build relationships that last. 🌱

We’re so excited about our upcoming season so stay tuned to hear more from Amber & Gwen and follow along our journey 💚

Big things are happening! 🌿
Our Earth Tending program officially kicks off next week in the GTA.
We are so excited to welcome our new cohort of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis trainees. Over the next 6 weeks, they’ll be diving into green infrastructure, urban forestry, and restorative land practices, all while braiding together Indigenous and Western knowledge.
What they’ll be up to:
	•	Restoring green roofs and planting trees
	•	Investigating our urban forests
	•	Exploring stormwater management sites
	•	Honoring the land through hands-on stewardship
We can’t wait to share the journey and the impact these future leaders will have on our climate resilience. 🌏

Stay tuned for updates from the field!

Happy Earth Day from our team at SpruceLab 🌎
Mother earth should be celebrated everyday, and one way to do it is by educating yourself and others on how to care for the urban environments we live in. Working with Mother Nature and not against her is described in Sheila and Katy’s book, Green Cities. Swipe to see a few images from our launch earlier this month 🌱

Winter is part of the context we design for in this region — from grading and drainage to planting and long-term resilience providing food and habitats for All Our Relatives year round

The land looks still but life continues, winter is a time for the land to rest, restore balance, and prepare for what comes next.

Winter is an important time to many Indigenous nations, often include spiritual naming ceremonies, storytelling, and the sharing knowledge and technique.
