PARTISANS is proud to announce that we have been selected to design the Construction Workers’ Memorial at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

“We inherit our cities as finished objects, but beneath every tower, bridge, tunnel, and road is the memory of workers who risked — and sometimes gave — their lives to build them.”

In the @archpaper feature on the Ontario Building Workers’ Memorial, PARTISANS co-founder @alexanderjosephson reflects on a forthcoming civic memorial at Queen’s Park honouring construction workers whose lives have been lost or forever changed through work-related causes.

First unveiled by @ongov, @ontarioatwork, @infraontario on the National Day of Mourning, the memorial carries forward a shared commitment voiced by Premier @fordnationdougford and Labour Minister @davidpiccini: to recognize the workers who have built this province, and to keep worker safety at the centre of public life.

Designed by @partisansarchitecture in collaboration with @akt_ii, @sprucelabinc, @mulveyandbananilighting, and @colliersprojectleaders, the memorial gathers individually inscribed metal plaques into a raised, self-supporting structure. Each year, on April 28, new names will be added, allowing the memorial to grow as a living record of remembrance.

At its public unveiling, that commitment was echoed across civic, labour, and construction communities — from @mayoroliviachow and the @cityofto to @pbctcontario, @liunacanada, @onfedlab, @cecco_ici, and @meritontario — alongside the families and communities whose lives are carried in this work.

Big progress at Cowan Recreation Centre.

From the completion of the Fieldhouse feature rail and the wood ceilings in the aquatic and the reception areas, to major works now underway across the site, this milestone reflects strong momentum across every area of the build. Exterior glazing and metal panel are being completed on the gymnasium, building finishes are well in progress, landscaping works are full speed ahead, and the green roof installation is now underway.

These achievements are a testament to the dedication, collaboration, and shared commitment to excellence from our project team and Integrated Project Delivery partners: @cityofkitchener , @unitydesignstudioinc , @waltersgroupinc , @mte_consultants , @aecom , @sprucelabinc , Pratus Group, DEI Consulting Engineers, @acpoolconstruction , Guild Electric Limited, Sutherland Schultz Ltd., @flynngroupofcompaniesofficial , and @elementfiveco

With every milestone, this project is coming to life as a space the community will truly connect with.

🌎 Earlier this week, we had the best time at launch of Green Cities: How Green Infrastructure Helps Urban Centers Thrive, an important new non-fiction picture book about creating indigenous-led, sustainable, and welcoming environnements in the metropolitan areas we call home. Green Cities is written by Sheila Boudreau 🍁 and illustrated by Katy Dockrill 🍁

🌲 Earth Day (22 April) is approaching, but engaging our children in hopeful visions for the future is a year-round endeavour. 🌳

Located on the Confluence of the Bow and Elbow river, the concept Nitsinii’Pokaako’sa, Blackfoot for 'My Special Child,' proposes four distinct pavilions that serve as places for ceremony, to commune with nature and ancestors, and to leave offerings.

(Image 1) Elbow Holds the Bow Trade Site is a large open-use space and sits directly beside the river confluence. Like a lodge camp circle around a large fire pit for celebration and food prep, it is a grassy place to accommodate tipis / tents and artisan-vendor tents, booths, and food trucks.

(Image 2) The Elder Pavilion, located within the All Land Relations Elder’s Garden, allows children and classrooms to sit in a circle with Elders, Knowledge keepers, and instructors to learn about plants, animals, traditional culture, and healing activities. (Image 3) The Storytelling and Story Hearing Lodge and Amphitheatre includes a circular stage, partially covered by a structure that has an adjustable waterproof canvas shade. This concept submission was led by Jared Tailfeathers and in collaboration with Hive Developments, Spruce Lab, and Doug Winnipeg for the Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) competition for the City of Calgary.

Earlier this year, SPECTACLE, led by Jared Tailfeathers and in collaboration with the amazing team at Hive Developments, SpruceLab, and Doug Winnipeg, contributed to Nitsinii'Pokaaoko'sa, Blackfoot for 'My Special Child.'

The concept was shortlisted as part of the Indian Residential School Memorial (IRSM) competition held by the City of Calgary, guided by various members of the Indigenous community and sited at The Confluence.

The concept is centered around the belief that children are our most valuable treasures. It celebrates childhood, cultural continuity, and healing by restoring the experiences - family, ceremony, learning - that residential-school attendees were denied. It also honors the resilience of survivors and their descendants, inviting all generations to 'hold children close' through shared stories, play, and ceremony.

(Image 1) My Special Child Playground and Family Play section provides a space to celebrate family connection, education, joy, and happiness through play and exploration.

(Image 2) The Central Memorial Cairn and Buffalo Rub Stone holds the rest of the site design together and is where people are invited to make offerings that can be tucked into the stones.

(Image 3) The All Land Relations Elder's Garden reclaims a natural space along the riverfront that grows original rivers' edge plants, ranging from small medicinal plants to shrubs and bushes such as willow and choke cherries, to timber of cottonwood and lodgepole pine. The garden is designed with a small pond and pathway system.

We are super grateful to have been a part of this team and in the creation and presentation of this concept.

On Monday, Unity Principal Bill Lett helped facilitate a full-day “Home Stretch” session at the Cowan Recreation Centre in Kitchener, bringing together the entire Integrated Project Delivery team as construction moves toward completion.

Every person on site took part, from design partners and project leadership to every crew member working on the ground. We shared a meal together, celebrating the collaboration and trust that have carried this project forward. The day was a chance to pause, reflect on how far we’ve come, and make sure everyone remains aligned on priorities, milestones, and the culture that keeps our IPD team strong as we move toward completion.

The session was about more than coordination. It was about strengthening the culture that defines this project, reminding each of us that every trade, every role, and every decision contributes to something bigger. We revisited the story of how the project began, shared updates on the CRC’s legacy as one of Canada’s largest net-zero recreation centres, and reconnected to the “why” behind the work.

When we build together, we build better.

All steel has now been erected for the gym at the Cowan Recreation Centre in Kitchener, another major milestone in bringing this landmark facility to life.

It’s incredible to reflect on what the Integrated Project Delivery team has achieved since beginning the Validation phase just two years ago. Ground was broken in May 2024, and construction is now well underway on the 222,000-square-foot complex — set to become one of the largest indoor recreation centres in Canada when it opens in late 2026.

We’re proud to be leading the architectural vision for this transformative project, helping shape a lasting hub for community, sport, and connection.

CLT panels are now in place on the Field House at Kitchener’s 222,000 sq. ft. recreation complex.

The cross-laminated timber forms the building’s exterior envelope, showcasing its strength, precision, and sustainability. Paired with a steel structure, it demonstrates how CLT can accelerate construction while reducing carbon impact.

Set to open in 2026, this will be Kitchener’s first net-zero carbon building—and one of the most sustainable recreation facilities in Canada.
