We are the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation): A unity of the Squamish Peoples with an uplifting culture, rich history, and exciting future.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
On September 30, Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, hundreds of our Community Members, members of the public and local leaders came together to march through downtown Squamish, honouring our Survivors and their families and remembering the children who never made it home.

It was a moving day filled with ceremony, culture, and connection, including prayers, stories, drumming, dancing and singing. We had the honour of blanketing our Elders and Survivors and celebrating our mén̓men as they danced in front of the stage.

This year’s gathering also marked an important moment in the relationship between Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and the District of Squamish. On September 19, the District delivered a formal apology to our Community during a private ceremony at Totem Hall, acknowledging the harms caused to generations of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people through colonial systems and policies. Yesterday, the apology was acknowledged publicly at O’Siyam Pavilion.

Chet kw’enmántumiyap (we thank you all) to everyone who joined us in remembrance and solidarity.

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh master artist Sequiliem (Stan Joseph Jr.) is the creator of the Nation’s beloved Thunderbird.

Honoured with a blanketing ceremony at last month’s Amalgamation Day, Stan is as iconic to the Community as his Thunderbird. Recently, the Nation’s Nexwsyétsem (Communications & Engagement) sat with Stan for an interview where he explained his artistic history and how he took his teachings from Elders and incorporated their lessons into the design of our Thunderbird.

Read about our Nation’s history through the eyes of Stan, and how this treasured Sḵwx̱wú7mesh artist is inspiring a new generation of carvers, painters, and dancers. His story is the feature article in this week’s issue of Syétsem.

This Saturday, October 17, municipal elections will be held across BC.

It is vital that Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People choose the municipal governments they believe will serve them best. These governments make decisions about services that affect our daily life, including roads, transit, parks, recreation, emergency services, housing, land use, and local planning.

Voting gives us a voice in local decision-making and helps ensure Sḵwx̱wú7mesh perspectives are considered in shaping the future of our Communities.

Vancouver’s Municipal Election: What Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Expects From The Next Mayor and Council

Squamish Nation Council provided a statement regarding Vancouver’s Municipal Election.

"The City of Vancouver operates on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and whoever Vancouver elects next, the relationship with Squamish Nation must be a priority.

The Squamish Nation–City of Vancouver Protocol Agreement was signed between our two governments in 2023. To date, Squamish Nation is the only local First Nation to have signed such a protocol with the City.

Good work has been done under the Protocol Agreement. However, this work has just begun. Whoever is elected on October 17th must reaffirm their commitment to the government-to-government relationship with Squamish Nation, implementing existing commitments under the Protocol Agreement, advancing UNDRIP, and ensuring Indigenous rights, title, and jurisdiction are reflected in City decision-making.

The City of Vancouver’s next Mayor and Council should view Squamish Nation as a key partner in addressing housing affordability, economic development, climate resilience, transportation, and other challenges facing our communities. We are addressing these challenges in a Squamish way, led by our values and principles as a Nation.

The City of Vancouver was designated as a City of Reconciliation in 2014, and endorsed the UNDRIP Strategy and Action Plan with MST in 2022 and 2024. Reconciliation requires ongoing commitment, resourcing, and capacity. We look forward to continuing this good work, together." by @squamishnation
