Last night I attended a screening of @backtothefiretv . Once again, it was incredible. 🔥

The series asks a simple question. What values have we lost, and what could they change if we brought them back?

For me, the answer is reconciliation. Not as a slogan, but as a way of working together in all things.

Vancouver is a port city. Our waterfront has always been a meeting place of peoples, trade and ideas. When reconciliation guides how we work together, our city and province can reach the next level and be a shining example for others.

Thank you to the sponsors who made this possible and live these values:
• @bc_maritime
• @dpworld
• Global Container Terminals
• Neptune Terminals @neptuneterminals
• SSA Marine

Thank you to Chief Gibby Jacob. His story of perseverance, loss and triumph has given me strength and hope. He shared a teaching from his mother. Love is something you can give freely, and love returns. That is not weakness. It is strength.

To all communities, including my own Sikh community: let us return to the fire. To our teachings and our elders. That is how we walk in many worlds and build together.

Huy chexw a to Chief Gibby, @geenajackson22 , @andykeenpics and the Back to the Fire team. 🙏

Vancouver’s Municipal Election: What Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Expects From The Next Mayor and Council

Squamish Nation Council provided a statement regarding Vancouver’s Municipal Election.

"The City of Vancouver operates on the unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), and whoever Vancouver elects next, the relationship with Squamish Nation must be a priority.

The Squamish Nation–City of Vancouver Protocol Agreement was signed between our two governments in 2023. To date, Squamish Nation is the only local First Nation to have signed such a protocol with the City.

Good work has been done under the Protocol Agreement. However, this work has just begun. Whoever is elected on October 17th must reaffirm their commitment to the government-to-government relationship with Squamish Nation, implementing existing commitments under the Protocol Agreement, advancing UNDRIP, and ensuring Indigenous rights, title, and jurisdiction are reflected in City decision-making.

The City of Vancouver’s next Mayor and Council should view Squamish Nation as a key partner in addressing housing affordability, economic development, climate resilience, transportation, and other challenges facing our communities. We are addressing these challenges in a Squamish way, led by our values and principles as a Nation.

The City of Vancouver was designated as a City of Reconciliation in 2014, and endorsed the UNDRIP Strategy and Action Plan with MST in 2022 and 2024. Reconciliation requires ongoing commitment, resourcing, and capacity. We look forward to continuing this good work, together."

With very little rain lately, river levels are low and few coho are reaching the hatchery. Together with @squamishnation and @metrovancouverorg , we’re temporarily increasing flows and opening the weir to help them through. The flow increase is not a safety concern.

We’re asking anglers to voluntarily refrain from fishing on the Capilano on Oct 14 and 15 so migrating coho have the best chance to reach the hatchery.

Similar efforts in past years helped more than 2,000 fish get through. Thank you for helping us protect these salmon! 🙏

6,000 rental units. 11 towers. One public park running underneath all of them. 🌲

Sen̓ákw sits at the south end of Vancouver’s Burrard Bridge in Kitsilano, on 10.5 acres of reserve land returned to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation). The land was once part of an 84-acre parcel at the meeting of False Creek and English Bay.

Revery Architecture is the design architect of the masterplan. Kasian Architecture is the architect of record for the Squamish Nation through their Development Corporation, Nch’kaỷ. The project will deliver over 4 million sq. ft. of residential and commercial space in 4 phases. The first tower already has residents.

Here is what the plan includes:

🏘️ 1,200 homes at below-market rates, plus 250 set aside for Squamish Nation members
♿ Accessible units in every tower, with 10% of homes designed to become even more accessible in the future
⛰️ Two tower types inspired by Squamish culture: the Mountain tower, with copper-fritted glazing and balconies drawn from the Nation’s crescent and trigon motifs, and the Long tower, “a mnemonic for the longhouses that once stood in the village”
🌱 A goal of Canada’s first large-scale housing development with net-zero operational carbon, supported by a blackwater-powered district energy system, mass timber construction and advanced stormwater management

At ground level, pavilions, green infrastructure and native plants create space for cultural sharing, storytelling and daily life, a “village in the park” in a city where most towers are built right up to the street.

From the sea to the sky in minutes ✨🏔️

A ride up the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, followed by a little trail adventure through the mountains 🌲🥾

At 885 m above sea level, the summit feels like a whole different world — with panoramic views of Howe Sound, coastal mountains, and endless wilderness stretching in every direction. 🌊⛰️

We only wandered a short trail loop, but honestly… sometimes you don’t need to hike for hours to find a view that takes your breath away. 🤍

🎥 Turn the volume up, take in the views, and watch till the end — Squamish really knows how to show off. ✨

Would you add this to your BC bucket list? 👀

Reflecting on an incredibly meaningful National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Lil̓wat7úl Cultural Centre in Whistler.

We raise our hands to our guest speakers, Carolyn Roberts, Julian Brave Noisecat, and Lhpatq Maxine Joseph Bruce, Shaelyn Johnston with Whistler Film Festival, SLCC Ambassadors, Nation Artist Market vendors, and everyone who joined us to connect, share, learn, and reflect on the ongoing impacts of Residential Schools, while also honouring the resilience of our communities and living cultures.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who showed up for this important and emotional day, and to the Resort Municipality of Whistler and Tourism Whistler for their support in making free admission available to all.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we had the privilege of witnessing the ceremony held by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).

Hundreds of community members gathered to listen and learn, to honour residential school survivors, their families and communities, and to remember the children who never returned home.

We were moved by many moments, including the touching moment Chief Gibby Jacob and his great grandson gifted a blanket to a young child in the crowd.

The ceremony also included the District of Squamish’s formal acknowledgement and apology for harms caused to generations of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People.

We are grateful to have been welcomed to gather, listen, witness, and reflect. We continue to reflect.

We recognize that reconciliation begins with truth — and that there is always more for us to learn.

Thank you to Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw for welcoming our community and creating space for us to listen and bear witness.

Every Child Matters.🧡 We stand with you today and all days.

In early 2023, Pathways to Tennis partnered with @tennisbc and Squamish Nation to launch a fully subsidized tennis program at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre in North Vancouver, the first initiative of its kind in the region.

Years of consultation shaped this launch, with every step built around the needs of the community we were entering.

What made it possible:
🤝 A direct partnership with Squamish Nation’s Recreation and Sport department
🎾 A shared commitment to introducing tennis as a new, non-traditional recreation option
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Programming designed for both youth and adults from day one

What we heard back:
💬 Strong engagement from kids already active in other sports
💬 Parents showing up consistently and staying invested in their children’s learning
💬 A community genuinely ready to welcome tennis as its own

This launch earned us the trust to grow. Within the year, Pathways expanded to Tsleil-Waututh Nation, and every program since has been built on the foundation laid here first 🌱
