For the second year running, Squirrels & Bears is supporting Highgate Art Fair, helping in as many ways as we can.

Our team created the fair’s visual identity, designed and developed the new website, and has been running the PR campaign.

We believe in using our skills for social good, and supporting the creative community in our neighbourhood feels very rewarding.

Highgate Art Fair is independent and artist-first, with 40 artists, galleries and collectives showing work straight from the studio, where you can still talk to the person who made it. It also has a children’s exhibition of work by pupils at Highgate Primary School, and a weekend of workshops for families.

A big thank you to Karina for all her beautiful design work, and to Rebecca for her tireless PR efforts. It has been a joy to watch it all come together.

If you’re in London next month, we would love you to come and spend some time in Highgate. The fair runs from 6th to 8th November in the lovely Victorian hall of Highgate Primary School on Storey Road, N6, opening with a private view on Friday evening.

Come for a browse, meet the artists, bring the kids to a workshop, and take home a piece of original art you’ll love for years. by @squirrelsandbears

“I’m fine” must be one of the most used phrases in any language. We’ve said it on days when we were anything but fine, and we are sure many of you have too.

We often stay quiet because we don’t want to be a burden, or because we’re so used to coping that asking feels unfamiliar. But the people who never ask are often the ones who would be most grateful if someone simply offered.

Empathy starts with noticing, and it also means giving people the benefit of the doubt. The people who seem distant or snap may be dealing with far more than we can see. Curiosity and kindness, instead of a quick judgement, can mean a lot to the person on the other side.

And empathy doesn’t need grand gestures. It's the smallest acts of kindness.

We see the same in our work. The words that resonate the most are rarely the smartest or the loudest. They’re the ones that make people feel understood, seen and heard.

So this World Mental Health Day, let’s not wait to be asked. Let’s reach out first, listen a little longer and offer the kind of support we’d quietly hope someone would offer us.

"Ethics" has no legal definition in UK procurement law. Not in the Procurement Act 2023, not in the regulations, not in the guidance.

So when the Mayor's Office recently cited ethical concerns to pause Palantir's £50m Met Police contract, it was filling a gap with its own judgement.

4C Associates' Ben Pollock, makes the case that this matters far beyond one contract. The procurement profession already has a well-established language for ethics, built by CIPS over decades. UK law just hasn't caught up. Leave that gap open, and "ethics" becomes whatever the administration in office wants it to mean - on this deal, and on the next one.

An argument for defining it properly, before the next contract raises the same question.

This week we say (a temporary) goodbye to our PR intern, Lily O Regan, as she goes off to university.

Lily started working with us in September last year, with a break in between for her travels - and we plan to have her back with us on flexible basis in the future.

Even with no previous experience, Lily has quickly become a trusted and very valuable member of our team - proving that with the right attitude, you can learn and do anything.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for Squirrels & Bears over the last year, Lily!

Have the best time at uni!
We will all miss you loads!💛 by @squirrelsandbears

Great read in the FT Adviser about why wealth transfers between generations succeed or fail - and the answer has very little to do with money.
Clare Flanagan, Head of Client Development at CapGen, made a point that applies well beyond family offices - people don't disengage because the strategy is wrong. They disengage because they have no agency.
For the next generation stepping into family wealth, that means sitting inside governance and structures built by someone else, with no room to express their own values. So more family offices are "hiving off" a portion of the portfolio, letting the next generation run something on their own terms, often starting with philanthropy.
The same insight came up with CapGen's growing base of female wealth owners. What they value most isn't more technical sophistication from their advisors. It's dialogue that doesn't bury them in jargon.
Clare's advice is: "Listen. And listen again. And listen a third time."

Most change programmes still get built like engineering projects: a roadmap, a timeline, a destination. But that model assumes the environment holds still long enough to follow the plan - and it doesn't anymore.

Marko Ilincic, CEO of AhaMo, makes a sharp distinction in his latest Training Industry piece - the old supply chain mindset was linear by design. Today's leaders need a supply web view that accounts for interconnected risks and dependencies, not a single predictable path.

His argument is that resilience isn't something you activate when disruption hits. It's built in advance - through clear context, transparent communication, real opportunities for employee input, and coaching that gives teams the confidence to move before they're told to.

What a lovely day at the @financialtimes Weekend Festival on Hampstead Heath yesterday.

So many thought-provoking sessions with brilliant speakers - the future of entrepreneurship, health screening for longevity, AI changing relationships, Nick Jones sharing his Soho House & Co story, and Beeban Kidron on children and social media, to name a few.

I also very much enjoyed Ludovic Hunter-Tilney’s debate on the best music of the 90s - fair to say I didn’t expect to be listening to Wu-Tang Clan on the day, but it was a great reminder to put them back on the playlist.

The most wonderful thing about the day, though, was seeing how many kids and dogs attended. Parents with tiny babies to teenagers listening in on sessions, and enjoying the brilliant hospitality in the sunshine - what a fantastic opportunity to inspire children to stimulate their thinking and ideas. taken in Hampstead Heath by @squirrelsandbears

What happens to grocery, hospitality and consumer brands when a growing share of shoppers simply want less - but better?

4C Associates' Katie Deem and Felix Haston explore the commercial ripple effects of GLP-1 adoption in the UK, from pack-size architecture to menu engineering, in a recent Food Manufacture article.

An insightful read for anyone thinking about category strategy in 2026.

Marketing has always rewarded the well-crafted message. Generative AI is indifferent to it.

When a potential client asks an AI tool for a recommendation, the model isn't reading your brand voice. It's reading your evidence - press coverage, directory listings, third-party mentions — and looking for agreement across all of it. Where it finds gaps or contradictions, it doesn't caveat. It simply leaves you out of the answer.

In her latest article for The European Business Review, our founder Petra Smith explains why an outdated directory listing is now a strategic problem, how AI distinguishes genuine expertise from general competence, and what businesses should audit first. by @squirrelsandbears

The best-performing ad in Cadbury's history contains no chocolate, no message and no people. Just a gorilla, playing the drums.

When we watch an ad featuring a person, part of our brain is on guard. We assess their motives, their sincerity, and whether they're trying to sell us something.

Animals slip straight past it. A dachshund in a hot dog bun has no agenda. So we relax, we watch, and we feel - and feeling is where brand memory actually lives.

The funniest, most loved animal campaigns also never make the animal the joke. The comedy comes from animals behaving with complete human seriousness. We laugh, but we also warm to them, because somewhere in that absurdity we recognise ourselves. And that's the real reason we love them so much.

We are not suggesting you put a dog in your ad. We're just saying that people don't remember arguments. They remember how you made them feel.

Here are our favourite animal campaigns of all time. by @squirrelsandbears

Your customers aren’t irrational. They’re human.

And humans don’t evaluate products in a vacuum - they evaluate them in context. Against other prices. With the language you’ve chosen. Within the constraints of how many options you’ve given them.

Show the same product two different ways, and you’ll get two very different responses. Not because anything changed - but because perception changed.

That’s the science behind every buying decision. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it. taken in London, United Kingdom by @squirrelsandbears
