Here it is: our new Basel team for contemporary music with our new professor, violinist Sarah Saviet!
With Sarah joining, the mixture of musical backgrounds, experiences, and mileage available makes me feel like going back to school. As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century, playing and interpreting contemporary music requires much more than good technique and musical skills. Unlike the past, a wide variety of interpretations for newly published works is easily available today. As such, the creative aspect - the singularity of the performer and performance - is needed more than ever for the young graduate. Hence our new department’s name: “Creative Interpretation in Contemporary Music.”
And for the students out there, searching for a masters program, this is for you:
If you want to master your chamber music skills.
If you are up for in-house concerts and touring (our class often performs at festivals and collaborations around Europe).
If you want to join a large community of composers, theorists, audio designers, improvisers, and fellow interpreters.
I welcome you to explore our Sonic Space Basel school. Applications open this coming December! by @ssaviet

Brussels Philharmonic & Ilan Volkov / Sat 20.06 / 20:30

A double world premiere in one concert!

🔸 Cassandra Miller’s Dad Goes to the Mountain is a deeply personal work written for her father as he faced vascular dementia. The music traces a fragile ascent up a mountain, touching on memory loss, the fluidity of time, and a mind in transition.

🔸 In Sci-Volo-Palla, Maya Verlaak builds her first concerto around unpredictable harmonics produced by violinist Sarah Saviet and cellist Jasmijn Lootens. Sounds appear, disappear, and transform as they move through the orchestra and live electronics, creating a continuous feedback loop.

📍 Flagey, Studio 4

Artist Spotlight: Saviet/Houston Duo

@ssaviet/Houston Duo: The Blue Hour
🗓️ 25 November 2025, 12pm

📍 St Paul's Hall

🎟️ Standard £18 // Solidarity £23.40 // Under-30 £7

Formed in Berlin in 2019, violinist Sarah Saviet @ssaviet and pianist Joseph Houston have become champions of new and experimental music, focusing on 19th and 20th century repertoire and collaborations with leading contemporary composers as well as performing their own compositions. At hcmf// 2025, they perform the UK premiere of Sarah Hennies’ @sarahhennies The Blue Hour – a ninety-minute work transforming repetition into a profound listening experience.

Demanding a deep connection between the two performers, in The Blue Hour, Hennies' distinctive focus on repetition takes on the quality of her recurring dreams – cycles that never resolve evoke dreamlike states of being chased, unable to reach a destination, drawing the listener into a fragile, suspended terrain.

The Blue Hour also reflects Hennie's interest in how extended duration shapes perception, moving listeners into a space where performance, patience, and focus merge. Saviet and Houston embody Hennies’ vision with quiet intensity, revealing the latent meaning within repetition and the nuances of musical memory.

Tickets for Saviet Houston Duo's performance of The Blue Hour (UK Premiere) by our Composer in Residence, Sarah Hennies, are moving quickly.

Get yours now before they sell out!

FESTIVAL CHATS #3 – IN BETRACHT. SARAH & LIAM

Violinist Sarah Saviet and gambist Liam Byrne join us to talk about in Betracht, where Renaissance meets electronics and contemporary music in a soundworld unique to these two artists. For Sarah and Liam, in Betracht is an invitation to pause, to listen with intention, and to explore connections across centuries and genres in a sound gallery of their own design.

As the reflective resting point in this year’s arc towards Zusammenfluss (Confluence), it offers space to regard what has come before and consider what lies ahead. taken in Sancta-Clara-Keller by @ssaviet

Host Juliet Fraser talks to violinist Sarah Saviet about the value of curiosity and confusion, the vulnerability of co-writing music and the steadfast companionship of magical hairy pigs.

References: teacher Rebecca Henry, Webern ‘Vier Stücke’, duo with Joseph Houston, ensemble mosaik, works by Arne Gieshoff, Liza Streich, Liza Lim, Lawrence Dunn & Evan Johnson on her disc SPUN, Feldman’s ‘For John Cage’, Riot Ensemble who commissioned a piece by Soosan Lolavar and all that dust.

Sarah will perform in the eavesdropping festival at Cafe OTO on Thursday 27 March 2025.
