Absolutely extraordinary new violin/piano work by Sarah Hennies performed by Saviet/Houston starts 3pm at @motesplatsmariatorget and our Tony Conrad/Jakob Ullmann programme at @weld_insta with Heilbron/Lane starting at 7pm. Vi ses!

Sarah Hennies has been a festival favourite since the scorching solo piece she performed for the second edition in 2017. We presented the combined film/ensemble piece ‘Contralto’ in 2019 and its been wonderful to see how her work has developed and the much deserved recognition she has received in the ensuing years.

For Ten Years Alive we present the Swedish premiere of ‘The Blue Hour’ — a new 90 minute work for piano and violin commissioned by Sarah Saviet and Joe Houston. Sarah has delivered a piece that demands a deep connection between its two performers and Saviet/Houston execute it with an extraordinary sensitivity and ravishing energy that could not be better suited to the intimacy and clarity of mötesplats mariatorget.

Sarah Hennies has long been celebrated for her ability to transform the simplest musical materials into profound listening experiences. The Blue Hour opens this up in new ways — transforming memory and dream into a profound listening encounter.

“the two berlin-based musicians are among the most important, versatile, and curious figures in contemporary music, and when they join forces and aesthetic concerns their power seems to expand exponentially” - peter margasak
formed in berlin in 2019, the saviet/houston duo focuses on collaboration with composers, new and experimental music, our own compositions, and 19th- and 20th-century music.
their debut album “a clearing”, featuring five jointly-composed pieces for violin and piano, was released on marginal frequency in 2024 and was selected for bandcamp’s “best contemporary classical music of 2024” list. our latest album, “lines we gather”, was released in 2025 on winter & winter and was nominated for the preis der deutschen schallplattenkritik.

Here it is: our new Basel team for contemporary music with our new professor, violinist Sarah Saviet!
With Sarah joining, the mixture of musical backgrounds, experiences, and mileage available makes me feel like going back to school. As we enter the second quarter of the 21st century, playing and interpreting contemporary music requires much more than good technique and musical skills. Unlike the past, a wide variety of interpretations for newly published works is easily available today. As such, the creative aspect - the singularity of the performer and performance - is needed more than ever for the young graduate. Hence our new department’s name: “Creative Interpretation in Contemporary Music.”
And for the students out there, searching for a masters program, this is for you:
If you want to master your chamber music skills.
If you are up for in-house concerts and touring (our class often performs at festivals and collaborations around Europe).
If you want to join a large community of composers, theorists, audio designers, improvisers, and fellow interpreters.
I welcome you to explore our Sonic Space Basel school. Applications open this coming December!

Sarah Hennies has long been celebrated for her ability to transform the simplest musical materials into profound listening experiences. The Blue Hour pairs Hennies’ distinctive focus on repetition with an exploration of scales and melodies new to her work, transforming memory and dream into a profound listening encounter.

The Blue Hour demands a deep connection between its two performers — Sarah Saviet on Violin and Joe Houston on Piano — who execute it with extraordinary sensitivity and ravishing energy (the bootleg we heard from the Donaueschingen premiere was genuinely jaw-dropping)

Sarah has been a real favourite since the scorching solo piece she performed for the second edition in 2017. We also presented the combined film/ensemble piece ‘Contralto’ in 2019 and its been wonderful to see how her work has developed and the much deserved recognition she has got for it in the ensuing years.

This concert at Mötesplats Mariatorget will be The Blue Hour’s Swedish premiere. Commissioned by Saviet/Houston Duo with support from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, SWR, and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

Feeling grateful for this one.

What a privilege to premiere @mayaverlaak's new double concerto with @brusselsphilharmonic, sharing the stage with the phenomenal @ssaviet and performing under the endlessly inspiring direction of @ilan.volkov.

Thank you to everyone who made this such a memorable experience, and to Tectonics for bringing together so many adventurous artists and unforgettable performances.

This time with hcmf// 2025: Rewind, we’re revisiting a performance that transformed time itself.

Saviet @ssaviet/Houston Duo brought extraordinary focus and sensitivity to Sarah Hennies’ @sarahhennies 'The Blue Hour', a 90-minute exploration of repetition, duration, and suspended resolution. Demanding deep connection between the two performers, the work unfolded through fragile cycles and slowly emerging melodic shapes, drawing listeners into a dreamlike terrain where nothing quite arrives — and that is precisely the point.

For Hennies, repetition is an exploration of lived experience as much as musical structure. In 'The Blue Hour' it takes on the quality of recurring dreams: searching, unresolved, caught in motion. Across the work's extended span, the concept of performance itself seemed to shift — at once becoming a 'casual' state and reaching the kind of heightened, intimate concentration that can only be attained over such long durations.

In Sarah Saviet and Joseph Houston’s hands, the piece became a profound act of shared listening that lingered long after the final sound dissolved.
