Consider this your reminder.

Heather Cardena knows firsthand that early detection can make a difference for breast cancer patients. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we join her in encouraging women not to delay their mammogram.

Thanks to her own mammogram and the support of her oncology team and ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation, Heather can focus on the moments that matter most.

Help spread the message by sharing this post with the women in your life. by @ssmphysicaltherapy

One of Cora Singer’s greatest passions is playing volleyball. As a high-level athlete over the years, however, the wear and tear from the sport caused some pain. Cora has been coming to SSM Health Physical Therapy for a few years off and on, but most recently saw Physical Therapist Caroline Jaycox at our Female Performance Center.

Volleyball has caused Cora to injure and reinjure her knee three times and her most recently injury was to her back. For the knee injury, she sprained her ACL and MCL, which led to back spasms between her shoulder blades.

At first, Cora had to stop playing the sport she loves. She had pain and her muscles were weak. She couldn’t jump as high during matches and was confined to a hinge brace to help stabilize her knee. Her pain was also disrupting daily life outside of volleyball.

As she worked with Caroline, Cora's knee pain slowly went away. “Finally not having pain in my knee when playing volleyball was a peak for me,” she said. “Right now, my goal was to get my strength back and grow it. With therapy, I accomplished that goal.”

Since Cora had come to Caroline previously, after she suffered her most recent injuries, she knew where she wanted to go for physical therapy. “I love going to P.T. because of her,” she said. “She would know everything that had happened in my daily life. I also love how she had a daughter named Cora too! I love what she has done with the new clinic in Chesterfield and that’s why I moved with her.” by @ssmphysicaltherapy

Each year, the entire SSM Health Physical Therapy market comes together for a day of friendly competition, team building and celebration.

Representing their respective markets, employees take part in crowd-favorite events like trivia, dodgeball, cornhole and the always-entertaining lip-sync battle.

While the competitive spirit is on full display, field day is about more than winning. It’s an opportunity for teams to connect and build camaraderie.

Congratulations to Laura Masters of the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Therapy locations for earning the Spirit Award and to Joel Dougherty and his team from the Greater St. Charles and Chesterfield markets for capturing the overall championship! by @ssmphysicaltherapy

More than 18 months ago, a tornado destroyed the SSM Health Day Institute in Arnold. Rebuilding became a symbol of resilience, hope and healing.

Today, we celebrate the center's official ribbon cutting and grand reopening. We’re grateful to welcome patients back into a space designed to support healing and recovery for years to come. Thank you to everyone who helped make this milestone possible. by @ssmphysicaltherapy

We were proud to host an Art of Health event at our Brentwood center last week. The night had over 100 people attend and it featured six artists and a performance poet.

Staying healthy is an art form which we can all benefit from. Research continues to show the many ways that art can support overall health and well-being. Physical Therapist Shawn Tucker began putting art on the walls of his center back in 2002 because he recognized how influential it can be in the healing process.

We were thrilled to have such a great turnout and look forward to continuing events like this in the future. by @ssmphysicaltherapy

Ravon “Ray” Ellis has been coming to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Pediatric Therapy on West Florissant over the past couple of years. Coming into therapy, he had difficulty walking safely for more than three minutes, frequently strained his voice while speaking because his words were difficult for others to understand and had trouble holding items like a pencil. He has been working with our physical, occupational and speech therapy teams.

Fast forward to today, and Ray has made tremendous progress through his hard work, determination and never-give-up attitude.

“Ray is such a light in the clinic,” said Physical Therapist Katie Dodge. “He works incredibly hard during sessions and never gives up. Because of his efforts, he no longer utilizes a walker at school to get between classes and is now working on higher-level skills like jumping safely and negotiating obstacles.”

“Ray is truly a ray of sunshine,” said his Speech-Language Pathologist Denise “Alexa” Lasam. “He works hard on his speech sounds to make his message more easily understood – all while becoming the ‘King of UNO’! His hard work and joyful personality are contagious.”

Occupational Therapist Katelyn Smith said, “Ray always ends my Thursday afternoons on a high note!” “He has been working hard on getting stronger and more coordinated with his upper extremities. He is now working on zipping up his jacket, handwriting skills and emotional regulation.”

We can’t wait to see what you accomplish next, Ray! by @ssmphysicaltherapy

Who hasn’t had a little back pain here and there? Especially when you sit at a computer or are on your phone for extended periods. But how do you fix it? It’s a question we get a lot. So we asked a physical therapist what they would do in your situation.

From improving your chair setup to implementing gentle stretch breaks, you can do a few things at home or work. But if it’s not getting better in a week or so, that’s when you call us.

Living with chronic pain is scary and common — whether it’s low back, shoulder, knee, head (migraines), neck or hip pain.

But here’s the thing about chronic pain from our latest blog that may be truly shocking: The mental and emotional component can actually limit your physical recovery.

And the really surprising part is that physical therapy doesn’t just help with the physical part. Structured and supervised movement from physical therapy can help your brain realize that you can move without extreme pain, giving you the power to keep going, which is crucial for proper and lasting improvement. It’s a positive feedback loop for your body.

There’s so much more to treating chronic pain, so read the blog to see how long treatment usually takes and whether you have any “red flags” that could affect your treatment plan. Link in bio.

Martha Blaess loves being active, especially running and swimming. When an injured hamstring uncovered underlying pelvic floor issues, she had to take a break from running.

Initially, Martha worked with Physical Therapist Vanda Wilder at our Creve Coeur, where she met CoreVia Pelvic Health Physical Therapist Alex Baran. After several months of working on her hamstring and not finding complete relief, she decided to try pelvic floor therapy with Alex at Cesterfield - Female Sports Performance Center.

"It is not an exaggeration when I say that working with Alex was life-changing," Martha shared.

Working through therapy, she started to see changes in her daily life and activities. They focused on comprehensive, meaningful and functional improvements. Before pelvic floor therapy, Martha had never comfortably worn a tampon, limiting her abilities as an athlete.

"Alex was incredibly empowering," Martha said. "Pelvic floor therapy is invasive and vulnerable, but she truly created an environment that felt safe and comfortable."

What started as physical therapy for her hamstring ultimately resulted in relief that Martha never imagined.

Today, she's back to running without monthly limitations. by @ssmphysicaltherapy
