“Come on Cienna! You have to tell me who you’re seeing.” My friend Rosie had very good intuition.

“What do you mean? I’m not seeing anyone” I said, trying to persuade her.

“You have a special sparkle in your eyes, you are in love with somebody, right? Is it Zack? I saw that you danced together at the Snow Ball. A lot of girls were jealous, you know how popular Zack is.”

“Yes, I danced with him, but it’s not Zack.”

“WHAT?! Wait, is there another man in your life?!” Rosie asked, shocked.

“NO! I mean, he’s just a friend, and I just met him...”

“If he’s just a friend, why did your voice crack and you blush? Tell me, is he handsome? Is he tall? Tell me more!”

“I don’t know, I’ve only been able to talk to him.”

“Don’t you know what he looks like? But haven’t you met him in person?”

“Let’s just say I haven’t been able to see his face yet. It’s complex. He’s intimidating, arrogant, and he can seem selfish at first glance, but I think it’s a shell that hides a hard past. When I’m with him I feel so good, and the strangest thing is that, despite being intimidating, I feel safe at his side.”

“I don’t know who that guy is, but what you’ve told me doesn’t sound too suitable for you. Please be careful Cici, I don’t want you to end up with someone who will hurt you.”

“Don’t worry Rosie, I’ve already told you, he’s just a friend.”

"After the revealing truth about Axel’s spell, I could barely think about anything other than the risks he was undertaking. If it weren't for the smell of wet grass and the rooster's crow, I wouldn't have noticed that we arrived just as the day was breaking.

"What's wrong? You're very quiet for yourself," Axel's words diverted me from my thoughts.

"I'm worried about everything Ydris has told us, aren't you? If something goes wrong, you could lose your life..."

Axel tilted his head slightly and let out a small whinny as a laugh. "Well, it's just like any other normal day in my life! It's nothing new! My missions are usually much more dangerous than spending a few weeks in the form of a horse."

"But I don't want you to risk your life for me! I mean, for us, for Steve and his family!"

"If that's what you are worried about, I'm not taking this risk for you. Even here, my motive is purely selfish, so don't worry."

"Selfish? You're helping other people! Where's the selfishness in that?"

"The truth is, I'm doing this because it's a vacation for me. I've been almost three weeks without seeing the boss, you know how good that feels? 'Axel, burn this. Axel, now destroy the druids' lair,'" he said mockingly, imitating the tone of his supposed boss.

"Fuck off. Let Jessica do it; she never does anything. I've gone years without a darn week off, so I'm owed this," he sighed.

I was getting to know Axel more and more, enough to know he wasn't being 100% sincere, but no matter how much I asked, I knew he wouldn't tell me his real motives.

"Well, I'll see you this afternoon in the paddock?" he asked as I unsaddled him.

"I'm afraid not this time; I am going for a ride with a friend."

"Why didn't you say that earlier! Is she pretty? Don't answer, I'll see her when we go with her."

"Sorry Axel, this time, I'll take Echo. We're going to have a girl talk, and I don't want any eavesdroppers. I want a real horse who won't understand us." Axel didn't take my comment well and he got cocky as I left him in his paddock.

"I see..." Ydris didn't seem surprised when we told him that Axel lost consciousness in the meadow. "That means the transformation process is nearing its end."

"WHAT?! What do you mean?" Cienna shouted very disoriented.

"It's an effect of transformation spells. When you spend too much time transformed into an animal, you can end up becoming that animal. In Axel's case, if time keeps passing without him regaining his human form, he'll eventually turn into a horse, without human consciousness, and behaving like a regular horse, as you've described to me. These episodes will increase over time, until there comes a point where he can't return to being human."

"But that's terrible! Why didn't you warn us before?!" Cienna's concern grew by the moment.

"Honestly, I didn't expect it to happen so quickly. It's a very variable process. Some people can go for many months without experiencing these episodes, while others, like Axel, have these symptoms appear early, in the second week."

"How much time do we have?" I asked directly.

"No idea, it could be a couple of weeks or a month. The potion to turn you back into a human will be ready in a few days."

"Well, then we'll do the following: as soon as the potion is ready, I'll keep it close to me just in case. In the meantime, I'll try to hold on in this form for two more weeks, which is when the jumping show takes place. Alright, Cienna? The worst that can happen is that if I look very bad before the show, I'll have to take the potion and may not be able to fulfill my part of the deal."

"Axel! That's not the worst part! What if you have another episode, and it becomes irreversible before you can take the potion? It would be like you're dying! It's a very high risk. I think you should take the potion as soon as it's ready. It's okay if we can't save Steve's farm! It's not your problem!" These last words pierced me like knives.

"I'm sure those episodes of unconsciousness will become more frequent before they become irreversible, right?" Ydris nodded in response to my question. "Great, if we see those episodes increasing in frequency, I'll take the potion. Okay?

“Hey Axel! Guess what?" I ran towards his field to share some stable gossip when I noticed Axel was grazing. Axel doesn't usually eat in broad daylight because he's "embarrassed" to eat hay or grass in front of everyone.

Despite my call, he continued grazing, either unaware of my presence or simply ignoring it.

"Axel?" I asked nervously, and my friend (or what was left of him) lifted his head slightly when he saw me jump the fence. His eyes were dark brown, and suddenly they changed to an intense red color.

"Cienna? Are you here? When did you arrive?" Axel seemed confused, but not more than I was.

"Haven't you seen me coming? I called you a while ago, and when you didn't answer, I jumped the fence and approached. What happened to you?"

Axel didn't reply, he seemed as lost as I was.

"We were supposed to visit Ydris tonight, right? We should tell him about this as soon as possible." I insisted, and Axel nodded slightly.

I don't know why, but I had a feeling that something was wrong with his transformation.

There is something off.

For two years strange things began to happen in the farm, but the appearance of the new horse of Cienna takes the cake.

To begin with, it appeared out of nowhere, without papers or owner, and suddenly Cienna comes up with the idea of entering the great championship that is going to be held in Jorvik to collect the prize and pay our debts! As if Cienna had that level of horseriding!

But it turns out that in just two weeks Cienna has gone from jumping 1 meter with lesson horses to being doing 150 cm circuits! I don't want to be misunderstood, I really appreciate Cienna and she's a very good rider, but it's too good to be true.

A rider needs years to prepare for those heights, but in her case, it is as if the horse did it all: measuring the distances, memorizing the route…

I have the theory that this horse is not normal, it has gestures of being intelligent. This morning I caught them doing a water fight with the shower hoses! Which horse does that? In addition, he only allows himself to be manipulated by Cienna, or failing that, by other beautiful young women. He does not let anyone else approach, and a horse is not usually selective with people, at least not in that way…

There is something fishy. My father does not want to ask questions because he is super happy that Cienna wants to try to pay his debts, but I will, and I’ll find out what is happening here.

When I was little, I remember reading an old book from the Silverglade library about some strange horses that only existed in Jorvik. I think they were called Starbreeds. They were horses that generated such a strong bond with their rider that they could talk telepathically with them. They were very intelligent and were related to the legends of Aideen. At the time I thought they were myths, but maybe it's time to read that book again...

I'd be lying if I say the days with Axel are boring. Lately the farm was a bit lonely and as soon as I finished my day I went home, however now I'm always spending time with him, and the truth is that I hadn't laughed so much in many time.

Today we had a jumping session where we started jumping 150 cm. At the end of the lesson, we went to the showers like other days, with the difference that either I was more absent-minded, or Axel more sensitive than normal.

"HEY GIRL! Don't pour cold water on me! We are in winter, and it is not pleasant to be showed, okay? At least wait until the water is warmer!" Axel said snorting.

"It's not cold! But okay. I'll wait for it to be hotter. May I prepare the jacuzzi for you too?"

"Is it not cold huh? Then try it yourself!" And with his nose he opened the tap of another hose that was nearby and, taking the hose with his mouth, soaked me all over... After a few seconds that my brain needed to process the facts (like the water was indeed cold), I lifted my body looking directly into his crimson eyes.

"Do you want a water fight? Well, you'll have it!"

"Master, we have news about Axel, Katja has managed to locate him with her music."

"Marvelous, where is he?"

"He's in the Silverglade farm."

"I'm going to activate the spy drone of Silverglade to check it" It only took a single click on my mobile to activate the drone. After some seconds of search, we received the image of Axel in a meadow with a girl.

"Tell Katja she has done a good job. Give her a break."

"Okay, but what does he do there with that girl?"

"Dear friend, this is one of those wonderful coincidences of fate."

"Coincidences of fate?! Why didn't he come back to us when he escaped those Druids? Doesn’t he trust us?"

"Axel is a smart guy, of course he doesn't trust us." My excess of tranquility as I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear seemed to stress my friend a little more. So I proceeded to talk again. "Besides, I doubt he would have endured the humiliation of us seeing him in that state, it would have been a very low blow to his self-esteem."

"But his shit is delaying our plan!"

"Stay calm. Look closely at the girl" Sangordha stared at the drone recording, finally looking at me as he began to put it all together.

“YOU PLAN WHAT!? That would only bring us trouble.”

“On the contrary, of all our allies, Axel is the most valuable to us, but he is also the most unpredictable. He is the only one who is not between a rock and a hard place, and that’s why he sometimes rebels against us, as in that incident of the wildfire of Hollow Woods. With that girl he will be much easier to control."

"Do you want to blackmail him with her?"

"Blackmail is a very ugly word, don't you think? I prefer to say it’s a motivation for him.” A machiavellian grimace was drawn on my face as I contemplated the perfection of my plan.

It's been 10 days since our paths crossed, and the truth is that it was being like a respite for me. For once I hadn’t to do any special mission, nor fight with anyone. It was a great relief not to feel the weight of the world on my shoulders, at least for a few days...

It's funny that to have time off, some druids have had to transform me into the animal with which I swore I would never have contact again, fate is ironic, don't you think?

Cienna is turning out to be a very nice company, has a good sense of humor, always follows my jokes! And she is always in a good mood, which is also appreciated! When she finishes working, she comes to spend the afternoon and part of the night at my paddock and we talk about random things. She has resigned herself not to ask me anything about my job since my answer was always silence.

It was curious to say the least, that a business like this one could be sunk in debt.

"Hey Cienna, this site is not too bad. You treat all the animals very well, the facilities are good, and the location is unbeatable, why this farm has such a large debt?"

"Well... It all started about a year ago, with the hollow woods wildfire." My heart shrank as I heard it, painful memories welled up in my mind making me regret asking.

"You know, that big wildfire that was on TV and killed thousands of animals and a Fort Pinta resident... As it approached Silverglade, the air and water quality worsened. Some horses died and it’s believed that it was due to the presence of ash in the water. Since then, many owners took their horses to other clubs. The fire destroyed some plots of crops owned by citizens of Silverglade, decreasing the purchasing power of these families and causing many to sell their horses... That's how the farm started to lose customers."

After a brief pause, Cienna continued to talk.

“For God's sake! Can you behave like a real horse at once?" We hadn't even gone out on the show arena and Axel was already making a scene. "You look like a rabbit jumping like this!”

"Hey! I know there is a horse that jumps this way!"

"Yes, that horse is Chalou, he's a famous grand prix horse and it's probably the only one in the world that jumps with its hands in front! Please stop! We are attracting too much attention, jump like a normal horse! Axel snorted resignedly. However, something told me that he would soon do it again.

Completing the jumping circuit was a piece of cake. Axel learnt it from seeing the previous riders and I barely had to guide him. I only had to do one thing: hold on him as tight as my legs could. Why? Because, even though the height of the obstacles was 120 cm, Axel was jumping them as they were 140 cm.

The worst came in the last jump, a triple bar to which Axel arrived with a bad distance on purpose, so that he could jump from afar and show off, and so he did, he took a big jump with his hands in front of him, a moment that the photographer of the show managed to immortalize. The audience was shouting "like Chalou!" and I could only put my hand to my forehead and hope that people wouldn't ask me too many questions about this stupid and arrogant ‘horse’.

The warm atmosphere of the ball could make you forget that cold winter night. There were smartly dressed people, some old friends, some new ones to meet. But above all there was a very lively atmosphere.

However, despite the happiness people radiated, there was something strange about the party... I felt like someone was watching me, but wherever I looked, I didn’t see anyone looking at me.

The feeling of being stalked increased to the point where I started to sweat. I went out to the terrace looking for fresh air, and curiously, on the wall there was a note:

"You get burned if you play with fire"

My mind didn’t take long to tie things up… My “horse” wasn’t a real horse, he was a dark rider whose magic was fire, it was clearly a threat. I was more and more convinced that someone was watching me.

The words Ydris said didn’t help “the soul rider of Lightning seeks revenge", a man wrapped in lightning was represented in my thoughts.

My body reacted trying to run away, but when I took a step back I bumped into a person. Afraid, I turned around wishing it wasn’t that soul rider. To my surprise it turned out to be Zack! Which was some relief.

"Hey Cienna, are you okay? I feel you worried".

"No! it’s nothing, I just wanted to breathe fresh air".

"Great, in that case, may I have this dance?" he said with a small bow offering his hand.

I decided not to give it more importance and go dancing, the feeling that someone was watching me disappeared quickly as soon as I relaxed. I thought I had thought too much about it and after all, the note could have been a coincidence. How naive of me.

It's been almost a week since I found Axel and there are many pieces that don't fit...

When I met him, he was very arrogant. However, when we were with that magician, Ydris, his behavior changed and he even seemed to care about me, as if he had empathy! And after that night, he was again as arrogant as before. And their changes in attitude aren't the only rare thing.

The other day Steve wanted to give me a dressage class with him. The truth is that I expected the worst because Axel, in theory, is not a rider and I doubted that he even knew the aids to do the different exercises.

To my surprise, without a word between us, he perfectly understood my aids and executed all the movements perfectly, even Steve was surprised. And that's very strange, because a person who is not related to horses does not know what a leg yield is, and he recognized all the aids and exercises.

This leads me to think that he was related to horses in the past. That would explain why he understands the riding aids. I have the theory that something bad must have happened to him in the past with horses, and maybe that's why he hates them.

Maybe that also explains his personality changes, it’s like he has an armor with which he protects himself from the world. That would explain why he showed empathy when we talked to Ydris. He had taken off part of that armor because he didn’t need to pretend with his friend.

Although it may seem otherwise, coexistence is not being easy, especially because people treat him like a horse. The other day Zack tried to give us a jumping lesson. Yes, I’ve said he tried because at the beginning of the class he patted Axel’s croup, who interpreted it as if a man had slapped his ass and began to buck like a rodeo horse, of course, bucking me off.
