Totally lived my “Cinderella at the Royal Ball marveling at the castle” moment for two days — learning, baking, and just taking in all the stainless steel appliances, readily available tools, neatly laid out ingredients, clean work stations, and a kind Chef close by guiding along the way! 🥐🥖🍞🧈🧀🍫

Do you believe in serendipity? Read on. A week before my trip to Paris, my friend @ish.aravind pings me and asks me to watch “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” on @amazonprime ‘cause she knows I am a Francophile and it is a “feel good movie.” I did watch it and loved it! I thought how cool it would be to go to Christian Dior’s studio at 30 Montaigne Avenue during my trip to Paris? Fast forward two weeks, I did! Still pinching myself!

En route to Paris, I was browsing the movies on the flight and just happened to see this sweet, simple, and nostalgic French animation movie called “Petit Nicolas.” Ofc, I watched it, loved every minute of it, and instantly fell in love with Jean-Jacques Sempé. Fast forward a week, I was sitting in Café de Flore’s and the table mat art looked very familiar. Turns out Sempé designed the table mat. I even got to visit the gallery that holds the license on Sempé’s artwork few blocks from the cafe! Talk about meant to be! 🥰😇

When I thought of a trip to Paris with a teenage boy (I know … why though?) signing up for baking class at La Cuisine Paris was a no-brainer for an immersive hands-on experience. From Katy at the front desk to Eline (our Chef Instructor) made us feel welcome, included, and comfortable. Did I mention there was lots and lots of French butter and lots of baked goodies to devour at the end of class?!?

19 years ago, I saw this beautifully illustrated cookbook titled “Paris Sweets” at my local Barnes & Noble. I instantly fell in love with the whimsical illustrations and the delicious recipes! I just wanted to be Florine Asch’s apprentice learning watercolor painting from her and Dorie Greenspan’s apprentice learning cooking and baking from her! How I was going to make this happen, I know not but hey! a girl can dream, right?

If you had told me “hey! Guess what? In 19 years, you will get to meet the author of that cookbook not once but twice in 2025, I would have thought you were crazy and were just toying with my emotions!

@doriegreenspan is a star you look from far … She has cooked and baked with THE Julia Childs and is a James Beard Award winning cookbook author for goodness sake … I am just a happy fangirl knowing I live in her era and get to breathe the same oxygen she does! She is the voice in my head while I am baking and that is more than good enough for me!

Like everything else in life though … life had different plans! Dorie expands her Dorie Xoxo newsletter to Substack! (By the way, if you are not subscribing to her newsletter you are missing out!) She meets with her early subscribers over Zoom in January 2025 (yes, of course, I am one of them… duh!) … she comes on the call and wants to get know each of us including me (umm…. Why?) When she said “Hello Sujanitha!” I almost fell out of my chair but remained calm throughout the call and then the floodgates opened right after with few “ouch moments” … I pinched myself really hard one time! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Then fast forward to last Tuesday, 10/21 when I actually got to meet her. The venue setting was intimate — Interview that ended with a Q&A session. Then the magic unfolds… I actually got to meet her, hug her, talk to her, and she said “Yes, I remember you from the Zoom call!” and she signed my book!! It was all so surreal! Sweet, beautiful inside out, so down to earth, funny, and kind through and through … and etched in my heart and memory forever!
