ICYMI: About Me and about Studio Ssydro! P.S. the name Ssydro (pronounced "Syd-row") comes from an elementary school yard duty who knew I didn't have a great home life. He constantly checked on me and made sure my brother and I were "good". Mr Brown of Sacramento, I hope you know how much you changed my perception of myself at such a young age !!!

All text in slides: Hi! My name is Sydnee Collamer ! I'm 29 years old & I'm from San Jose, CA (don't treak out ! I don't work in Al lol). I used to work for CHANEL, both in retail & later, corporate social responsibility.

I loved this job a lot actually, but I got in scolded quite a bit (oopsieeeee) because I had very strong opinions and liked to be transparent about things (huge no no for the double C's btw). But hey! That's life!
I met the most amazing people & wouldn't trade the experience at all.

While working at @chanelofficial , I also did design work on the side. I started with User Experience (UX) and quickly found how much I loved designing with accessibility and FUN in mind.

The problem was, I also loved fashion. And stuff. You know, tangible things. Things made with craft. When I started job searching, I felt really outcasted. I wasn't considered desireable for fashion design, and I didn't have experience (or desire) to work in tech. so went back to school for Product Design.

But "product" is such a broad term. I found myself dancing on the line of what is a product and what is art, or creation for creation's sake. My first design pitch - I was so nervous lol. This was March 2024. "Matthew" is referring to professor Matthew Hoey, industrial design and architecture at Parsons (@parsonsschoolofdesign). He was my favorite actually. (Hope you made it to Monterey, CA!)

But, like all perceived obstacles, it pushed me even further to MAKE space for myself. So I started Studio Ssydro.
A design house founded on being multifaceted. To be categorized meant to be basic, in my opinion.

I don't like being one thing, and I don't like the things I make to be one thing. The house is still growing. My confidence is still growing. (cont. in comments) taken in San Francisco Bay Area by @ssydro

As Summer comes to a close, I wanted to share my final design concept from last semester that will be heading into development later this year!!

This is my chair carved from Soapstone.

Designed into response to hostile architecture, this chair was conceptualized with the idea that every person deserves to feel welcomed and safe in their environment, regardless of social status.

The unique feature of this seating lies in its material; carved completely out of soapstone, the chair is able to naturally absorb heat given off by the sun and store it for hours, slowly releasing the heat to the user during cold times.

But what is hostile architecture? Hostile architecture in the intentional restricting of social behavior via civil engineering... those big ugly metal bars you see in the middle of benches or the iron bumps you find along edges, the caging around heating ducts/air vents, or the spikes drilled into the ground covering walkways and alleys. All of these were designed with the intent of shooing away unwanted behavior in people in public spaces.

Okay... so... Soapstone? Yeah soapstone! Soapstone is a naturally abundant resource found in the Appalachian Mountains and has actually been used for hundreds of years for its heat storing and releasing properties. Native Americans first used the stone in cookware as it kept food hot for a long time, and was also used by Canadians and Indigenous people of the Arctic for oil lamps and room heaters. Though it is a stone, it has a high talc content, making it almost soft & soapy to the touch- hence the name !! For this reason, it's also been used across cultures as an art medium and in home decor for centuries.

So, in theory, this chair is able to be installed in public spaces and may provide heat to those without shelter during the cold nights due to its natural ability to store and release heat... sometimes there is no better blueprint than mother nature! taken in San Jose, California by @ssydro

Rope, Piet Mondrian, and tattered furniture. What do all of these things have in common? ME. The zero waste art chronicles continue. My idiot cats become your design challenge, and good God did this one test the limits of my patience. Also, don't knock my carpentry skills. I'm not Jesus. I'm Sydnee Collamer. #StudioSsydro taken in Santa Cruz, California by @ssydro

"The slave does everything for the master: he grows the food the master eats, he builds the house in which the master lives, he weaves the clothes the master wears, he constructs the chair on which the master sits. The master does nothing. The upshot of this arrangement is that the slave achieves consciousness, the capacity for self-reflection, the capacity to talk to himself, the capacity to be both subject and object, I and me.
The master never achieves consciousness. This is because, while the slave sees himself reflected in the things he makes (in the crops he grows, in the house he builds, in the fabrics he weaves, in the chair he constructs) the master makes nothing and consequently has nothing in which to see himself reflected. So too, the poem the poet writes, the essay the essayist writes, the novel the novelist writes, are mirrors in which the writer sees himself reflected." - Hegel's allegory of the master and slave taken in Earth by @ssydro
