This time last week, had the pleasure of attending the most wonderful @craftscotland event, ‘Harvest: A Longer Table’ at @thefreecompanysco . A gathering of talented craftspeople, from potters & painters to jewellers & basket weavers, to share, learn & connect. Enjoyed sharing some thoughts on what the craft sector could learn from food & drink. So many shared values.
Thank you to @stacey___hunter for the invitation & the team at @thefreecompanysco for the fabulous farm to table lunch. A day to remember & here’s to the conversation continuing 🧡

I join @craftscotland @appliedartsscotland @eca.crafts, numerous organisations in Scotland and nearly 9000 petitioners to call for the saving of Performance Costume, Jewellery and Silversmithing, and Textiles courses at Edinburgh College of Art.

I have written to the University of Edinburgh’s Principal calling for a meeting to discuss measures to safeguard these essential parts of Scotland’s culture sector. Alumni, existing staff, and many others are heartbroken, and I stand firmly with them.

OH WELL, WHATEVER, NEVERMIND confronts the machinery of violence—and the apathy that allows it to become ordinary. Taking its title from a lyric in Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, the exhibition brings together three distinct but interconnected series:

OH WELL, body armor-inspired leather and titanium jewelry that transforms ballistic wounds into objects of adornment

WHATEVER, an installation of 300 titanium crosshair pins that implicates the wearer as both target and witness

NEVERMIND, black-shrouded leather and plexiglass mirrors that turn reflection into an act of mourning, shame, and culpability.

Together, the works ask what it means to protect, enhance, and repair the body in a culture that manufactures its destruction—and what it means to look away. Sales from WHATEVER will support @the__trace

Kerianne Quick (they/she; b. 1977, Glendale, California) is a nationally recognized craftsperson, curator, and Professor of Jewelry and Metalwork at San Diego State University. Their work has been exhibited at Craft in America Gallery in Los Angeles; Museo Franz Mayer in Mexico City; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; CECUT in Tijuana; and the Mingei International Museum in San Diego. Quick’s work is held in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Museum of Arts and Design, New York; and Design Museum Den Bosch in the Netherlands. For anyone who is wondering whether to visit HOMO FABER 2026: AN ISLAND OF LIGHT in Venice - go! This astonishing showcase of craft invites us to explore the fundamental relationship between light, materials and the human hand.

@esdevlin has created an epic journey through 15 immersive installations in the historic grounds and buildings of a former monastery on the little island of San Giorgio.

Hundreds of handcrafted objects by artisans from around the world are staged impeccably and with the benefit of Es Devlin's sense of theatre and experiential design. I loved the swimming pool where the familiar smell of chlorine hits your nose alongside brutalist architecture and spoken word poetry.

Individual craft artists from across the world are represented – each an island of talent and skill. I was thrilled to see pieces by @choi_keeryong_glass and @patriciashoneceramics who told me that her showcase with @craftscotland at @collectartfair led the curators of the show to her work. As Craft Scotland's new Creative Director this is the sort of impact I love to hear about.

By manipulating light through the use of water, mirrors, movement and more, Devlin creates a journey that illuminates the world of craftsmanship, from the craft artists themselves to their workshops, tools, materials and the exquisite objects they create.

The exhibition spaces explore the relationship between light, materials, talent and creativity, revealing how master artisans can use this life-giving energy as a tool to create wonder and joy.

Reposted from @craftscotland Following the shock announcement that Edinburgh College of Art will be closing the remainder of its undergraduate degrees in craft disciplines, Craft Scotland have released an open letter calling for their reinstatement.

Jewellery and Silversmithing, Textiles and Performance Costume are closing to new admissions in 2027 and will be taught out over the next four years.

“Each year we see work of the highest quality emerge from the ECA degree courses… we know that many of these graduates progress to very successful careers in craft, and make a valuable contribution to the wider cultural sector in Scotland and internationally.

Collectively, these graduate cohorts are ranked amongst the best in the UK. Makers working in jewellery and textiles have directly helped to establish the reputation of Scottish craft internationally and contribute to cutting edge research in materiality and design.

International visitors, collectors, curators and academics tell us that Scotland punches above its weight in terms of its contemporary craft culture. This shortsighted decision will have a disproportionate impact on the craft sector as well as significant impact on Scotland’s future creative success.”
