EMOTIONAL THANK YOU POST: Wow, what else can be said except a million thank you’s to everyone who attended and/or participated in the first year of Archive. From a random idea to a sold out room is hard to believe, and I’m grateful to those who encouraged the concept. If you don’t read beyond this part, the big take-away is that there WILL be an Archive 2027—stay tuned and see you there.

Now for some much needed acknowledgments, in no particular order.

This conference would not have been possible without the support and expertise of @aigany, specifically the queen of event coordination @staceypan, plus my other ‘boardies’
@justinwongofficial (president) and @hollywoodhondo. Extra love to all of the incredible volunteers that kept things running from start to finish.

Of course, our amazing speakers who took the leap of faith and thought this would be a good idea (hey, it was!): @_mattlamont, @briarlevit, @alexandertochilovsky, @trabuccocampos, @lichennyc, @amuki.ec, and @draplin. I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you all said ‘yes’.

I also want to acknowledge another conference that was a major inspiration for doing this in the first place, @forum_mtl, which I was privileged to speak at last year. The community, fun, and passion that exists in Montreal should be spread around the world, and this is my small contribution. Thank you @leoallaire and @ugo.lachapelle for being my role models (and go to their conference!).

Lastly, thanks to our venue @fitnyc, and the sponsors who helped tie a bow on this whole thing: @newspaperclub (newspapers, duh), @posterhousenyc (love), @baggy__studio (web dev), @busybeaverbuttonco (buttons, duh), @acehotelnewyork (speaker accommodations), @toccimade (programs), and @athleticbrewing (beer). Shout out to the team @order.design.nyc for entertaining and dealing with my insane ideas @sosupermegan, @g_rrettcorcoran, @laurelwarner, @emklaebe, and @joyceho.x. Special shoutout to the Standards Manual shop boss, Jenna Kim.

Photos by the amazing @jbuschardt.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AND SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

Andrea Trabucco-Campos (@trabuccocampos) is a graphic and type designer whose practice utilizes typography and behavior to build transformative visual identities. An active voice in emerging technologies like AI, his work investigates their role in the design process and culture. His output spans the digital to the material, encompassing brand identities and systems, websites and apps, print and editorial, motion and interaction, signage and environmental, and custom typefaces.

Andrea has led teams in transforming and launching some of the world’s most renowned brands. He has partnered with a range of organizations including Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Apple, Mastercard, The New York Times, United Nations, Noma, Space10 (IKEA’s Creative Lab), and MasterClass, among others.

Andrea was previously a creative director at Gretel and DesignStudio, and is returning to @pentagramdesign after prior stints as a designer and associate partner in the New York office from 2015–2019.

In 2022, Andrea’s active curiosity led him to co-found and run @vernaculareditorial, a small independent publisher with a focus on the intersection of form, typography and visual culture that stretch beyond the commonly agreed registers of “good design.” His first book, Artificial Typography, has garnered international attention and recognition for pushing the evolving conversation of AI and design.

Vanessa Zúñiga Tinizaray (@amuki.ec) is an Ecuadorian designer and visual researcher (Loja, Ecuador). Since 2004 she has been developing Crónicas Visuales del Abya Yala, a research project that has given rise to a living visual archive in continuous expansion.

Over more than two decades, she has built an ecosystem of more than 350 visual files. This repository develops from the morphological and semiotic analysis of signs found in cultural artifacts documented by anthropology and archaeology, which are later transformed through typography, code, and modular systems into original visual languages.

As a central part of her practice, she designs her own tools in Processing and p5.js, which allow her to activate these systems and generate thousands of typographic variations and patterns in minutes, continuously expanding the scope of the archive.

Her work is situated within the framework of the pluriverse and ontological design, proposing design as a space where multiple visual worlds can coexist, transform, and continue evolving.

Briar Levit (@briarlevit) is a professor of graphic design at Portland State University. Her feature-length documentary, Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production, tells the story of how production technologies and workflows informed graphic design from the analog mid-century to the Digital Revolution at the end of the 20th century.

She edited Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History (2021), which includes the research of 19 scholars including herself. Currently, she co-directs The People’s Graphic Design Archive @peoplesgdarchive (with Morgan Search) — a crowd-sourced digital archive with an aim to help create more inclusive and participatory design histories.

ARCHIVE SPEAKER: Matt Lamont

Matt Lamont (_mattlamont) is a designer, collector, educator and public speaker based in Bradford, UK. He co-runs Out of Place Studio, delivering design projects locally and internationally across cultural, civic and educational sectors. He supports his team across design and development from brand and print design to website development and systems integration.

Alongside his professional practice, Matt has built a substantial personal archive of graphic design material @designreviewed, including thousands of books, journals, catalogues, posters and other printed ephemera spanning more than a century of design history. Through collecting, documenting and researching these artifacts, he explores how visual culture evolves and how historical design can inform contemporary practice.

Matt regularly shares this knowledge through talks, workshops and teaching. He works with universities as a visiting lecturer, introducing students to the history of graphic design and encouraging them to look to the past as a source of inspiration for new ideas. Through his archive, teaching and public speaking, he aims to make design history more accessible and to inspire designers to engage more deeply with the visual culture that shapes their work and the society we live in.

His new book ‘Design Reviewed: A Graphic Design Archive’ is now available @vol.co via @uniteditions.
