Donald Trump wants applause for donating his presidential salary. He says he is the only president who did it and complains that he gets no credit. But Herbert Hoover and John F. Kennedy donated theirs, too. And the presidential salary is $400,000 a year, not $550,000. If Trump wants recognition, he can start by getting the facts right.

What deserves attention is the money flowing in the other direction. Reporting has documented enormous gains for Trump and his family from cryptocurrency ventures since he returned to the White House, raising serious questions about whether public office is serving the public or his private interests. An Inquirer editorial estimated that Trump made more than $2.2 billion in his first year back, more than in any single year of his business career. That is not the same as earning more than he has in his entire lifetime, but it is staggering. Are we really supposed to praise him for giving up a salary while he profits on that scale? by @standforautonomy

A new poll shows Democrats leading Republicans by 12 points in the fight for Congress. That is not an election result, but it should be a warning to every Republican in the House who keeps choosing loyalty to Donald Trump over loyalty to the people they represent. Americans are tired of the chaos, the unpredictability, the erratic behavior and the refusal to take responsibility. They deserve leaders who will put the country first, not a president who seems interested only in protecting himself.

Flipping the House is a chance to restore a check on Trump’s power. Congress is supposed to demand answers, investigate wrongdoing and stand up for the public, not excuse every controversy because it might upset the president. If Republicans will not do that job, voters can elect representatives who will. The poll is a sign of what people are thinking today. What happens next depends on whether they turn that frustration into votes. by @standforautonomy

Donald Trump says Kim Jong Un is “a friend of mine.” He says Kim likes him, and he likes Kim. This is the leader of North Korea, a regime that tortures, imprisons and executes its own people. George W. Bush once named North Korea as part of an “axis of evil.” Trump hears all of that and still wants us to know the dictator likes him. Apparently, that is what matters most.

Trump has called Ukraine’s president a dictator. He has attacked Spain, pressed his claim to Greenland despite Denmark’s sovereignty, and threatened Canada with tariffs while repeatedly treating its independence like a joke. But when he talks about Kim Jong Un, he talks about friendship. What kind of fucked up alternate universe are we living in when America’s partners get contempt and a brutal dictator gets affection?

This is not diplomacy. It is a president confusing personal flattery with moral judgment. The people suffering under Kim’s rule do not get to laugh off his cruelty, and Americans should not be asked to shrug when their president calls that man his friend. This is not OK. Trump is clearly not a friend of democracy. by @standforautonomy

It is 2 PM and Donald Trump is holding meetings in the Oval Office. Well, other people are holding meetings. Donald Trump is sound asleep.

This is not a one off image, and the hypocrisy is impossible to miss. Trump has faced repeated questions about appearing to doze at public events, yet he expects everyone to wave away the same concerns he used as a weapon against his opponent. A president who turns alertness into a campaign attack does not get to call it irrelevant when the cameras turn on him. by @standforautonomy

If you are supporting Republican politicians, you need to take a long hard look in the mirror. You are supporting people who take away money from hospitals in order to pay armed thugs attacking people outside of elementary schools. You are supporting people who are destroying the National Parks in order to give billionaires giant tax cuts. You're supporting people who literally murdered over 100 schoolgirls in Iran with a tomahawk missile. You are supporting people who publicly execute US citizens in the street and then don't even bother to hold an investigation. You are supporting immoral, self-dealing, corrupt, violent criminals.
