BREAKING: The Stanford Daily wins free speech lawsuit against the Trump administration.

“Stated plainly, freedom of speech belongs to the people. It is not the government’s to take,” wrote U.S. District Court Judge Noël Wise, referencing Founding Father Benjamin Franklin in her ruling. “Accordingly, the Court holds that the Challenged Portion of the Revocation Provision violates the First Amendment as applied to protected speech.”

Researchers working in the labs on Shriram’s third floor began to notice missing lab equipment early last week.

“It started with Mike Jewett’s lab. It was these really nice multichannel [pipettes] that were getting stolen — repeatedly, even after they were getting replaced,” said Ryan Kong, a fifth-year chemical engineering Ph.D. student working in Shriram. The INTEGRA Biosciences multichannel pipettes Kong referred to can cost upwards of $1,000 each.

Bell’s Books in downtown Palo Alto has aimed to cultivate an appreciation for the humanities in the community since 1935. With titles dating back to the 15th century, the bookstore originally consisted of a station wagon known as The College Book Company, dedicated primarily to supplying Stanford students with textbooks. Nearly a century later, the bookstore is nestled in Emerson Street.

“This is a wonderful surprise,” Hall said in a statement provided by the Hoover Institution. “Stanford’s economics department and the Hoover Institution gave me a dream job: the freedom and time to do the research I wanted to do.”

Hall also thanked his wife and coauthor, economist Susan Woodward, and congratulated Woodford, whose work has taught him “a great deal.”

The Daily initially filed the lawsuit on Aug. 6, 2025, after the Trump administration targeted several university students — including Mahmoud Khalil at Columbia University and Rümeysa Öztürk — for pro-Palestine speech. The lawsuit alleges that these immigration actions chilled student voices and created a culture of fear on college campuses, and limited international student participation in The Daily.

The Daily has reached out to U.S. attorneys representing the federal government for comment on the appeal.

The virtual lab was capable of designing new proteins that had been experimentally synthesized and validated. “We thought, can we scale this up?” Zou said.

Zou and lead author Harrison Zhang, an MD-PhD candidate, published a paper outlining their findings on Sept. 17 in Science, putting Virtual Biotech on the map in one of the biggest research journals.
