Apparently, my elbow was feeling left out of all the attention my knees have been getting. 😂

Nothing serious — just a cranky tendon that needs a little attention from physio. No scars, no ER visits, and no dramatic stories to tell.

In fact, I feel like I’ve done my part for the BC healthcare system by not going anywhere near the ER. You’re welcome. 😉

Now I just need to find out if my physiotherapist has an inside track with my extended health insurance, because at this rate I’m pretty sure I’m helping pay their rent. 😂💸

A little tape, a little physio, and I’ll be back at it. 🏃‍♂️

The warranty claim continues… 🤣 by @stantherunningman

And so, another @coastline.endurance Finlayson Arm weekend cheer squad has come to an end.

This year, I apparently received a promotion.

From random guy yelling encouragement at runners to…

✝️ Jesus on the Mountain. 😂

I stood upon the rock, arms outstretched, robes flowing dramatically in the wind, and offered words of encouragement to those making their way up the hill.

And yes… many runners took my name in vain.

But I forgave them.

It was a long hill. I understood. 😇

No miracles were performed, although a few runners may have experienced the sudden appearance of a strange bearded man in a robe yelling:

“BEHOLD! YOU HAVE ARISEN!”

There may also have been a chicken, a unicorn, a hippie, and a dinosaur involved.

Because apparently that’s just what happens at Finlayson Arm. 😂

Huge thanks to everyone who stopped, laughed, high-fived, took photos, yelled back, or simply looked at me like they were questioning every life decision that had brought them to that particular point on the mountain.

Finlayson Arm Cheer Squad 2026: DONE.

Same mountain.
Same ridiculousness.
Different costume.

✝️❤️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🦖🦄🪿

And yes… I’ll see you all again next year. Right @badasschicksruntrails ?? by @stantherunningman

UPDATE FROM GRADUATE SCHOOL:

I have spent the last several weeks researching workplace happiness.

The emerging conclusion appears to be:

Don’t think about happiness too much.

Which is unfortunate, because I am now thinking extremely hard about why I shouldn’t think about happiness too much.

I suspect the researchers may have anticipated this problem. 😂

But seriously…

I’m spending roughly 20–25 hours a week studying in this course, which is the first step toward starting my Master’s in Disaster and Emergency Management.

One of the things I’ve found surprisingly interesting is how something as seemingly simple as happiness becomes much more complicated when you start looking at the research behind it.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been reading research about workplace happiness, how we pursue happiness, how we measure it, and even whether placing too much value on being happy can have unintended consequences.

It’s been a good reminder that there is often a lot more to a seemingly simple idea than what we see on the surface.

And now, having spent several weeks thinking about happiness, I can finally start outlining my paper about happiness.

Because apparently the best way to understand happiness is to write a paper about it. 😂 by @stantherunningman

83.5 km and over 3 1/2 hours on Nēnē today.

A quiet ride. A coffee stop. A few pigs that seemed far less concerned about life than the rest of us.

There’s something about spending hours on a bike that reminds me not every thought needs an answer, and not every silence needs to be filled.

Today wasn’t about setting records or reaching some grand destination. It was simply about putting one wheel in front of the other and appreciating the road for what it was.

Some days, that’s enough.

Well… apparently no one at Royal Roads University thought to do a proper background check.

Somehow I’ve been accepted into the Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management program starting this November.

After 31½ years in the military and 2 years in the private sector, I figured I’d finally learn how emergencies are supposed to be managed—instead of causing them by surprise or cleaning up after Sea Training decided to surprise me.

Because apparently balancing work, running, volunteering, family life, and whatever sanity I have left wasn’t quite enough.

Here’s to a few years of reading, writing papers, questioning my life choices, and discovering that I apparently enjoy making my free time disappear. And here’s hoping my APA citations are the biggest disaster I have to manage.

Let’s do this. by @stantherunningman

So that was an adventure.

Today I did the @islandtrailseries Ladysmith 9K trail race.

When I arrived, my bib number decided to perform a disappearing act. For a brief, glorious moment I thought I was getting a free pass and could spend the morning relaxing. Unfortunately, race staff had other ideas and issued me a new bib.

My pre-race preparation was second to none. First, I became #flatstan and lay motionless on the ground. Then near the end of the race I received some high-performance hydration courtesy of a water gun. Elite athletes have elite training methods.

I love this race, although my relationship with the opening hill remains complicated. After that, it was an enjoyable trot through the woods and a great way to spend a summer morning.

I do have one complaint, though. Around the 7.5 km mark, a tree root launched an unprovoked attack on me. I feel the race organizers should have a conversation with the local roots about proper trail etiquette and respecting their elders.

Fortunately, the damage was limited to my pride, and the post-race hot dog was exactly what the recovery plan called for.

All in all, a great day on the trails with @charleskuyper. Good friends, good trails, and only a minor altercation with the forest. by @stantherunningman

Today’s adventure: a 10k hike up and down Mt. Prevost with some friends. 🥾⛰️

Three hours of climbing, sweating, questioning my life choices, and then being rewarded with views that made every step worth it. 😎

Highlights included:
📍 Finding a war memorial in the middle of nowhere.
🪨 Standing on a rock dramatically staring into the abyss like I’m filming the trailer for my midlife crisis.
🐭 Surviving a close encounter with local wildlife. A field mouse appeared on the trail and, while some may say it simply crossed in front of me, I choose to believe I was being aggressively pursued.
🌉 Potentially hanging from a bridge for a photo because apparently “reasonable risk assessment” was left at the trailhead.
✅ Not actually throwing myself into the abyss.

The mountain didn’t defeat me.
The wildlife didn’t defeat me.
Gravity didn’t defeat me.

Tomorrow’s stairs, however, may finish the job. 🦵😂

10/10 adventure.
Would hike again. 👍 by @stantherunningman

Run Club tonight was less about pace and more about heat management.

It was one of those evenings where stepping outside felt like opening the oven to check on dinner.

I ran. I sweated. I questioned several life choices.

At some point I found a bench and captured the exact moment my body filed an official complaint with management.

The good news: I finished the run.

The bad news: according to my shirt, I may have also completed a 500m swim.

Forward is forward, even when the weather feels personally offended by your decision to exercise. by @stantherunningman

My pre-race routine for the @navyrunesquimalt 10K included:

✅ Hydration
✅ Proper nutrition
✅ Bouncy castle
✅ Sitting on the slide like a six-year-old

I’m not saying this is the secret to running success.

I’m just saying nobody can prove it isn’t.

Finished the race, earned the medal, and managed to avoid being banned from the inflatables.

I’d call that a good morning.

My physio says KT tape is going to be my friend for a long while.

Considering I now have arthritis in both knees and cartilage damage in the left one, I’d say we’re moving from “friend” to “life partner.”

The knees may be past their warranty period, but they’re still getting me across finish lines.

At this point, a significant portion of my running budget appears to be dedicated to colourful strips of sticky fabric. So if any KT tape companies are looking for a middle-aged runner with questionable speed, questionable knees, and an excellent tape consumption rate, I am now accepting sponsorship applications.

Still running though.

Just a little slower, a little wiser, and considerably more expensive to maintain.

So if you see me running down the road wrapped in bright coloured tape, just know I’m being held together by determination, physiotherapy, and what I can only assume is industrial-grade sticker technology. by @stantherunningman

Breaking news: local athlete discovers revolutionary race strategy.

Step 1: Dress as a bumble bee using garbage bags and electrical tape.

Step 2: Eat a donut.

Step 3: Run 400m.

Step 4: Repeat.

Step 5: Recruit a second bumble bee to do the exact same thing.

Some people call it a relay race. Others call it a cry for help.

Either way, the 3rd Annual @vicdonutmile was a success.
