Today we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis os Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order and teacher and mentor to St Anthony.

Francis is the patron saint of animals, ecology, the environment and of Italy, merchants, and peace.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.…….. taken in Saint Anthony's Club by @stanthonysfeast

Desperately Seeking Sue! Can someone help Brian?
🕵🏻‍♂️🫶. #FeastComp

The tradition of turning to Saint Anthony in order to find one’s soulmate is well known in Portugal, Italy and in Latin America where the Saint is famous for being a wedding saint (Santo Casamenteiro).

Pope Francis recalled this a few years ago during a meeting with a group of students from Padua: “In Argentina we have great veneration for St Anthony; he is the patron of young people looking for their sweethearts,” the Pope said.

During the Saint’s Feast great attention is dedicated to young people in search of soulmates in Padua as well. A special evening is dedicated to them here in the Basilica during the 13 Days Novena leading up to the Feast.

Part 5: (This one is special!) The Saint Anthony Feast in Boston’s North End. Paul of @massiminosboston invites me to his aunt’s house, which is one of the biggest stops of the Saint Anthony procession. His Aunt and Uncle lower their calendars of pinned donations from their balconies. This part of the North End really felt like being in Italy. The balcony, the narrow streets, and Italian being spoken. This was an exhilarating experience. Something the camera may not capture effectively, is the electric feeling in the air. Love, excitement, proudness, and all of the powerful emotions that embraced us. Paul’s aunt makes food for an army and after the Saint continues on in procession, her home is still opened so that the families and society members can come in at their leisure and enjoy trays of food that she has spent days prepping and hours upon hours cooking. This might very well have been the most authentic experience in all of my years documenting Italian neighborhoods/enclaves, feasts and churches in America for the last 14 years. A truly phenomenal experience and one that I will cherish forever. Thank you, Paul, for inviting me into your family’s home to share in such a sacred tradition. I am truly grateful and honored.
