POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

At last! I get to share my motion comic animation thingie I made this past semester as a means of promoting my nonexistent comic and also just trying to learn something a little unrelated to drawing and painting.

I never used after effects before this and quite frankly I hope to never use it again. It was truly a harrowing experience that I’d rather not even recount. But IDKK, we’ll see!

I suppose I ought to start actually making that comic now,,

Howdy! My name is Layla and I am an illustrator that primarily works on narrative projects with fun stories and visuals. I also like horses, in case you couldn’t tell. After graduating from FIT I hope to work in freelance and eventually publish my comic “The Anatomy of a Vampire”. Until then, I’ll keep drawing horses.

Untitled Still Life, 2026, oil on panel.

Been tapping into my oily side… can you believe I’ve made like less than 5 oil paintings in my lifetime? I spent way too long on this one and learned a whole lot of what not to do moving forward.

Not much else to say about this one ‘cept I luv painting metal and also plants!

More paintings coming soon!

Dumping all the stuff I’ve been working on for my comic the last month or so to show that I am in fact working on it alongside my many random side projects 😁

Some finished concept art, some not so finished. I’m trying to figure out the look and vibe for the very start of the story so that I can begin actually drawing the comic hopefully by September. I think I might be on track? Hard to say, I am 3 months post grad and also never made a comic before.

Stay tuned for future updates! Back to inhaling paint fumes I go x

Finally got around to scanning the plein air gouache paintings I did a couple weeks ago! Scenes from LIC, Rockaway Beach and Central Park.

It was my first time actually painting on site somewhere (usually I just sketch in my lil book which is way less of an effort) and while it felt a bit clunky and silly to set up my goofy stool and easel that randomly decides to disassemble itself at times, I found the whole process to be shockingly meditative and peaceful. Also very sweet when folks would stop by to make comments or ask questions!

It was also shockingly challenging, especially in the beginning. I do love a good sunset as you may have noticed but it was lowkey pretty hard capturing as much of the light and shadow in such a small window of time, as it would all change so rapidly once it the evening came. I also was frequently being attacked by the powers of nature such as when a brigade of mosquitos ate me alive in LIC. Nonetheless it was so fun and I seriously get the hype behind painting from life instead of a photograph. I mean like whatever I always knew that, bht like, now I GET it. Everyone try plein air painting it’s lit

Ft. Wip of a very important portrait at the end that I mean to finish soon,,,

(Also thinking about putting these originals up on my site for sale, but alternatively i can produce more prints for anyone interested. Let me know!)

Here is a painting I originally made for this year’s Folio Society Competition.. except I, having failed to realize the Folio Society is indeed UK based, missed the submission deadline by two hours because famously midnight in the UK is not simultaneously midnight here! OOPS!

Oh whatevs. You live and you learn… anyhow, I had a blast making this nonetheless as it was my first honest attempt at combining my traditional painting skills with my digital. It is an illustration for the book Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, which entrants are expected to read the first chapter of and pick a scene to illustrate. I ended up reading the whole thing and was irked to find the rest of the book vastly more interesting than the first chapter. It was a real challenge trying to come up with a comp that not only detailed the first chapter but also the essence of the overall story, but I think I did an alright job!

Gouache on paper, fiddling in Photoshop.

Getting around to sharing the last few things I made in BFA, including this work for my thesis class , depicting the Kovači Cemetery, a famous martyr burial ground in Sarajevo. In my final semester I had figured it be worth my time to put aside the gorey punk-rock vampires for a bit and reflect on aspects of my identity/background. I can’t say I found it to be as riveting of a subject as the gorey punk-rock vampires but it was certainly a needed change of pace!

This painting made me realize I really ought to get off that damn iPad and back to the easel..
Made in gouache and touched up in Procreate.

Thank you everyone that came to FIT’s Graduating Opening Exhibitions!!! It was sweaty and PACKED but more than anything very touching to see all my lovely talented peers from a wide range of majors + the incredible work they’ve done in the last few years, some of which is pictured poorly in the next few slides from when I was frantically running back and forth all night. If there’s anything I love more than horses it’s talented oomfs.

Thank you very much to friends and family that stopped by, and thank you to the professors that helped arrange and put this all together!

+ bonus pics from SOI student scholarship event! Two in one! What can I say fellas? It’s a busy time for lil ol Lala!

Had an awesome time participating in #chalkfit last week!! I finished this cutie patootie mural in just two (long delirious painful) days!

It’s been a while since I did a mural and I honestly didn’t expect to have as much fun as I did. I mean, can’t you see me straight cheesin’ in all these photos? That’s a happy camper!
Idk, there’s something hella sweet about standing outside with a bunch of your buds painting on a wall or something.

Thank you to the random onpassers of Chelsea Manhattan for your endlessly bizarre comments and support!

And thank you Horses!
