One of my favorite seasonal traditions in New York is to see the chalk pastel murals by the fourth-year Illustration students at FIT! #chalkfit is an annual public art project started in 2013 by Dan Shefelman, the Chair of the Illustration & Interactive Media Program at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Along FIT’s Seventh Avenue facade, the artists are allocated a vertical space as the exterior canvas for their work - this columnar arrangement is a perfectly Instagrammable photo-op. Since I started following this project two years ago, it is obvious the students have the privilege of free rein with what they can create because I have seen such a fantastic range of work along these walls! Many times I will reroute so I have an excuse to pass by these murals. They have brought me great cheer!

Summer is gradually drawing to a close and I cannot remember for how much longer these will be up, so make sure you visit the FIT chalk murals before they’re gone!

Huge congratulations to all the other talented illustrators! I was blown away by all the incredible work shown that night.

Thank you to everyone who has shown both myself and my work so much love :’)

Howdy! My name is Layla and I am an illustrator that primarily works on narrative projects with fun stories and visuals. I also like horses, in case you couldn’t tell. After graduating from FIT I hope to work in freelance and eventually publish my comic “The Anatomy of a Vampire”. Until then, I’ll keep drawing horses.
